2 1 Background 1.1 Dash 9-44CW (GE C44-9W) The GE C44-9W, or Dash 9-44CW, is manufactured by General Electric Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania. Debuting in 1993, the C44-9Ws proved very popular with many North American railroads placing orders such as Santa Fe and BNSF (the liveries featured in this pack) as well as Chicago & North Western Railway, CSX, Southern pacific, Canadian National Railway, Union Pacific Railroad and BC Rail. The similar Dash 9-40CW was purchased by Norfolk Southern. Due to stricter emissions requirements introduced in 2005, the production of the Dash 9 was replaced by the GE ES44DC. 1.2 BNSF At its largest the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad would own over 13,000 miles and the routes which made up its system would become some of the most heavily and strategically used throughout the West that remains so to this day. In 1994 it agreed to merge with north-western giant, Burlington Northern, to form the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, now known as simply BNSF. The railroad s renowned War Bonnet livery has been made in several variations ranging from the more popular silver and red with yellow trim to the blue and yellow. 1.3 Norfolk Southern The Norfolk Southern Railway is a major Class 1 railroad in the United States, owned by the Norfolk Southern Corporation. The company operates 21,500 route miles in 22 eastern states, the District of Columbia and the province of Ontario, Canada. The most common commodity hauled on the railroad is coal from mines across several states. The railroad also offers an extensive inter-modal network in eastern North America. The current system was formed in 1982 with the creation of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, a holding company, and on December 31, 1990, the Southern Railway was renamed Norfolk Southern Railway, and control of the Norfolk and Western Railway was transferred from the holding company to the Norfolk Southern Railway. In 1999, the system grew substantially with the acquisition of over half of Conrail. 1.4 Canadian National Railway CN is the largest railway in Canada, in terms of both revenue and the physical size of its rail network, and is currently Canada's only transcontinental railway company, spanning from the Atlantic Pacific. Following the purchase of Illinois Central and a number of smaller US railways it also has an extensive network in the central United States along the Mississippi River valley from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. Today Canadian National owns approximately 20,400 route miles of track in 8 provinces, as well as a 70 mile stretch into the Northwest Territories to Hay River on the southern shore of the Great Slave Lake; it is the northernmost rail line anywhere within the North American Rail Network, going as far north as Anchorage, Alaska. The railway was referred to as the Canadian National Railways (CNR) between 1918 and 1960 and now as Canadian National (CN) from 1960.

There are works on the tunnels so be extra vigilant. 3.3 Dash to Lenwood Date November 1998 Duration 25mins Season Winter Start Location Barstow Engine Shed Today you need to refuel your engine, assemble all your motive power (in the order 4197, 4325, 4323 and 4093); couple to your freight cars then begin your journey out of Barstow. Aim to pass the Lenwood junction by 15:23, allowing another train to pass. 3.4 Oil and Coal Date June 1999 Duration 55mins Season Summer Start Location Larkspur Starting at Larkspur, take oil to Monument then organise some empty coal freight cars before heading North back up the line.

8 4 Using the Dash 9 in Custom Scenarios RailWorks Dash 9 Locomotive Pack Before you are able to use the Dash 9 locomotives in your own scenarios you must enable it in the object set filters for that scenario. When you make your own scenarios, or edit existing ones, only the default object sets are enabled for that route (for example the Kuju/Railsimulator assets for European routes and Kuju/RailsimulatorUS for North American routes). To enable additional object sets (which could be for any downloaded or freeware content) ready for use they must be checked in the object set filter list in the editors. When editing the scenario you wish to add the Dash 9 locomotives to, ensure you are in the Scenario Editor and click the small blue square on the middle left panel. This opens a new panel on the right hand side of the screen (you may need to move your mose over to the right hand side for the panel to fly out. You can pin it open if you wish). This new panel has a drop down list off providers (usually the company name which produced the addon) and a list off all products by that provider. The Dash 9 pack is produced by Railsimulator.com so RSC needs to be selected as the provider. The rest of the panel is then populated by all other RSC products you have purchased. To enable the content of the pack for use in this scenario, check the box next to Dash9Pack01. Now the Dash 9 engines will be available in the asset browser list for placement in the current scenario only. If you want the Dash 9 engines to appear in the browser list for EVERY scenario on a route you must follow the same procedure but be in the World Editor and you can now check the first box. The slight disadvantage of having content enabled for all scenarios on a route, even when that content may not be used, is increased loading times.
