1 Space Utilization March 2016

2 U INTRODUCTION This Space Utilization is an analysis of instructionall room usage at (SBVC) during the fall 2014 semester. Space Utilization examines the number of hours per week each room is scheduled for instructional use during a semester. Title V policy on utilizationn and space standards are used to determind e efficiency of room utilization. The analysis compares the amount of time a room is actually utilized to the amount of time it should minimally be utilized to be deemed efficient usage. Additionally, Weekly Student Contact Hour (WSCH)) generation by hours per week of space utilization during the semester for each subject was analyzed to evaluate efficiency. The analysis also reviews WSCH generation with assignable square footage (ASF) usage and Title V recommendations for WSCHH production via lecture and lab space. The purpose of this Space Utilization analysis is to provide data regarding WSCH generation with the amount of instructional space utilized on campus. The analysis will review efficiencies in room usage as well as efficiencies of WSCH generation per the amount of space utilized. METHODOLOGY Title V policy on utilization standards are determined on the basis of a 70 hour per week maximum room availability (Monday Friday from 8:00 am to 10:000 pm). Per Title V standards, this analysis maintains that classrooms shall be utilized no less than 53 hours per week to achieve minimum qualifications for efficient room usage. Similarly, laboratories shall be utilized no less than 27.5 hours per week to achieve minimum qualificati ons for efficient room usage. Percentage of room utilization is i calculated based on actual contact hours within each room versus the Title V standardd for achieving minimum qualifications for efficient room usage. For example, e a classroom with 53 actual contactt hours during the semester would achieve 100% 1 utilization. WSCH Capacity may be defined as the amount of WSCH a room has the capacity to generate based on its size and type. Title V standards were also used u to determinee WSCH Capacity for classrooms and laboratories and may be compared to a rooms actual WSCH generation. Fall 2014 term data for instructional offerings at SBVC was providedd by the San Bernardino Community Collegee District (SBCCD) Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Research and Planning. This was the most current fall term for which data was available during time of collection. The data provided information on each course section offering by room location, contactt day(s) and time( s), instructional method, and WSCH generation. WSCH generation was calculated for each course offering within a room. If a course section utilized multiple rooms during a semester for various instruction methods, then WSCH generation was estimated based on each rooms contact hours. If a course section utilized an Arranged (ARR) hour contact c method it was included with the space utilization only if the section generateg d WSCH and used a lecture or lab instructio onal methods. Course sections thatt utilized an ARR contact method for Independent Study or Work Experience credit were not included in room utilization hours. If a course section met in a room forr less than 17 days in a semester the contactt hours were not included in room utilization hours. Contact hours for intercollegiate sports course sections weree not included in room utilization hours.

3 U WSCH generation by subject was compared with the hours per week of spacee utilization to measure a level of efficiency. This metric evaluates WSCH production with the amount of total instructional hours spent in spaces on campus. High WSCH/Hourly utilization would imply that a subject is producing an above average level of o WSCH for the amount of time it is utilizing instructional space on campus. High WSCH/Hourly utilization may also imply high a high fill rate for a particular subject per the amount of section offerings. WSCH generation by subject and the amount of ASF usage by that subject on campus was also compared with Titlee V standards for space needs. This metric evaluates the actual amount of ASF utilized on campus to generate WSCHH for each subject by the amount of ASF that subject should have needed per p Title V standards to generate the same amount of WSCH. Space need or surplus is determined ed by subtracting the amount of ASF Title V standards determine to bee sufficient for each subjects WSCH generation by the amount of ASF actually utilized on o campus by each subject. Additionally, the amount of ASF required for eachh subjects WSCH generation per Title V standards (WSCH/Title V recommended ASF) was compared to the actual ASF utilized byy each subject (WSCH/actual ASF utilized) u to determine a gap or surplus in the amount of ASF used to the amount needed to generate the same amount of WSCH.
