4 Suitability 1. Which type of car suits your needs? The first thing you should think about is what you need from a car. What are the things you are going to be doing and what type of car best meets those needs? Here are some questions to consider as a starting point: How many people are going to travel in it regularly? Will you be doing a lot of motorway driving? Do you mainly do short journeys in built up areas? How much boot space do you need? Is parking a problem? Are you able to change gear easily? If you have a mobility aid, will it fit easily into the car? Do you need to take your scooter or wheelchair with you? For instance, if you mainly drive in built up areas with low speed limits, a petrol engine might be more suitable. This is because most diesel vehicles are fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) and many of these need to be regenerated by regularly travelling at speeds over 40mph. If you have a big family you may want to consider a large family car or MPV. If you find it difficult to change gear easily, an automatic might be a good choice. You ll also need to think about travelling in the car day to day. Small changes in type, model or specification can have a big impact on your comfort or the car s suitability. For example, seat height, door opening angle and positioning of the seat belts can all make a big difference. A good place to start is to think about your current car, if you have one, and decide what you like and dislike about it. It may be useful to refer to the quick checklist on page 6. Adaptations and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles For information on adaptations to make driving or travelling easier (such as hand or steering controls) and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (specially designed to accommodate your wheelchair), please see pages 29 and 34 of this guide. Which type of car will be right for you? You can see all the cars listed by type, with a short description of what each category means e.g. hatchback, MPVs, 4x4, etc. on pages of this guide. If you are at all unsure as to what s right for you, then your local dealer will be glad to help. Your dealer will take you through the Suitability Questionnaire, which is designed to make sure the car you re considering, and the Motability Scheme, is right for you. 5 Affordability 2. Which cars come within your budget? Above all, we aim to make leasing a brand new car affordable. So once you have decided what sort of car would suit you best, you need to know which ones are within your budget. Keeping fuel costs down Don t forget that your lease includes everything, except fuel, to provide you with worry-free motoring, so you will need to take into account the car s fuel costs. To keep the running costs down you may want to consider a more fuel efficient engine. Each car listed has a miles per gallon (mpg) figure; cars with a higher mpg cost less to run and usually provide lower CO 2 emissions over the course of your lease. Remember the mpg given is a guide to help you compare cars and is based on test conditions. The actual mpg each car achieves in real world driving is likely to be lower than the official figure. Choose a car to suit your budget When you lease a car through the Motability Scheme, there are three pricing options. However, no matter how much you pay or what car you choose, all customers will enjoy the same all-inclusive package of insurance, breakdown cover, servicing, tyres and glass replacement. The three pricing options are: 1 Cars that cost less than your mobility allowance a range of over 100 cars on the Scheme cost less than your mobility allowance, meaning the remainder will be paid directly to you by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). These cars are available to lease at a fixed weekly amount for the whole of your agreement and any increases in your allowance that the DWP makes will be paid directly to you. For more information, see page 9 of this guide. 2 Cars that cost all of your mobility allowance we have a range of over 200 cars that cost the same as your allowance. There s no and you simply swap the whole of your weekly mobility allowance for the car of your choice. 3 Cars that cost all of your mobility allowance and also have an you can increase your choice of cars by topping up your allowance with a non-refundable upfront payment which we call the. This payment covers the difference between your allowance and the total cost of the lease over the course of your agreement. To give you an idea of costs, for each car listed we have highlighted the average annual fuel costs which can help you compare between cars and see which option might save you money. Trade in your old car You can trade in your privately owned car to help finance the of your new car. 6 Test drive 3. Try out a few cars before you finally decide Once you ve worked out what type of car you want and looked at the available options, it s very important that you take a few different cars out for a test drive. A test drive is the only way to find out properly whether a car is right for you and your dealer will be more than happy to arrange this. Even if you choose a car similar to the one you drive now, you may well discover that the manufacturer has made a number of changes and alterations to the latest model, so it is advisable to take a test drive to make sure you are still happy with your choice. There are three parts to a successful test drive: 1. Ins and outs: Take time to check you are happy about getting in and out of the vehicle. 2. Dealer demonstration: Ask the dealer to show you around the vehicle and explain all the features. 3. On the road: Take the car out on the road with the dealer. Check how comfortable it is to drive, or travel in, and how easy it is to park. Use this handy checklist to mark each feature of the car you test drive out of 10. Add up the totals and see which one comes out on top! It s also worth bearing in mind that the delivery times will differ for different makes and models. Ask your dealer what the expected delivery time might be as it may affect your choice. Test driving automatics, adapted cars and WAVs If you want to test drive an automatic car you will need to arrange this when you call your dealer as there are often less of these models available on site. To try out adaptations, it may be worth contacting a Driving Mobility Centre see page 29 for further details. Meanwhile, if you are opting for a WAV, specialist WAV suppliers will travel to your home to help make this easier. We ve included a glossary on a fold out at the back of this guide. 2 Fuel type: This shows you what kind of fuel the car takes, such as Petrol (P), Diesel (D), Electric (E) or if the car is a Hybrid (H). 3 : This shows which cars are classed as automatic (l) or semi-automatic (l). Cars classified as semi-automatic will vary from model to model. 4 DLA, PIP or AFIP holders: These prices are applicable for recipients of the Higher Rate Mobility Component (HRMC) of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component (ERMC) of Personal Independence (PIP) and Armed Forces Independence. 5 holders: These prices are applicable for recipients of War Pensioners Mobility Supplement (.) 6 : The non-refundable amount payable upfront to your dealer in addition to your weekly mobility allowance. 7 : This shows the relevant amount of mobility allowance that will be paid to Motability Operations Ltd each week. Total allowance means that the total amount of the higher rate mobility allowance is payable in exchange for your car. From April 2018, total allowance is for recipients of HRMC of DLA, ERMC of PIP and AFIP; and for recipients of. 7 8 Average mpg: This shows the average number of miles a car can travel for every gallon of fuel. This is for comparison purposes only and the actual figure achieved, is likely to be lower than the figure shown here. Average mpg figures quoted are as reported by the manufacturer. 9 Average fuel: This shows an approximate annual fuel cost for comparison purposes only. It is based on the average annual mileage driven by Motability Scheme customers (8,000) and the latest AA fuel price report. 10 CO 2 emissions: This shows the emission levels in grammes per kilometre (g/km). A green tick highlights low emission vehicles which have a CO 2 of 100g/km or below. CO 2 figures stated are manufacturer reported CO 2 levels. Points to note: From 1 January 2019, fuel consumption and miles per gallon (MPG) values are measured using the new WLTP fuel economy tests, which typically give lower MPG performance than the old NEDC tests. Please consult manufacturer websites for the most up-to-date MPG performance. The terms, conditions, prices, model features, adaptations and vehicle availability set out in this car price guide are correct at time of going to print. These may be subject to adjustment or withdrawal in the event of any changes taking place which affect the cost of the provision of the lease agreement or vehicle availability. In the coming months the wider car market may experience longer delivery times or availability issues with some makes and models and customers are advised to discuss this with their dealer at the point of application. The lease agreement package with Motability Operations Limited comes with a mileage allowance of 60,000 for three year leases and 100,000 for five year WAV agreements. If you go over this amount, you will be charged 5p for each extra mile. Insurance is included, however, in the event of a claim you will be asked to pay an excess unless a third party is found to be at fault. Full insurance details are included in the Insurance Cover Booklet supplied with the Motability Scheme car. 9 Cars less than allowance Cars that cost less than your allowance Over 100 cars are available to lease for less than your weekly mobility allowance, so you keep the difference. No is needed, you simply pay a fixed weekly amount for the whole lease. The remainder of your allowance will be paid directly to you by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). 29 Adaptations Adaptations Adaptations are a range of devices that can be fitted to your car to help make driving, or travelling, easier. Typically, adaptations fall into three categories: they can help you drive, stow your wheelchair or scooter, or get in and out of the car. We currently offer around 400 different adaptations through our Motability Scheme Managed Adaptations Programme, where the adaptations are fitted before your car is delivered and the price of the adaptation is paid along with the to your dealer at the start of the lease. The adaptations included over the next few pages are just a sample of the selection available for a full list please see our website, motability.co.uk. To take advantage of the prices listed, you must order any adaptations you need through your Motability Scheme dealer at the same time that you order your car. All prices include installation and any maintenance that may be required. Further adjustments carried out by your installer may result in an additional charge. Mechanical hand controls and left foot accelerator If you find using foot pedals for braking or acceleration difficult, you may be better off using a hand control, such as a push/pull device or a radial accelerator. There are a number of different hand controls available from different manufacturers, but the basic function is the same across most models the foot pedals are controlled by devices installed around the steering column and wheel, allowing you to use your hands to push or pull a lever to control the speed of the car or when you need to stop. Most push/pull hand controls can be ordered with a built-in indicator switch at no extra cost. If you cannot operate the standard accelerator pedal in an automatic car, you may benefit from having a left foot accelerator fitted. This system transfers the original acceleration control of the car to an extra pedal fitted on the left side, allowing you to manage your speed in a way that s more comfortable for you. With most installations, the original accelerator pedal can still be used when the left foot pedal is not deployed, so the car can also be driven safely by any nominated drivers who do not require adaptations. 35 Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles WAV sizes explained If you are looking for a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) there are some key decisions that will help narrow down your choice of suitable vehicles. The size and weight of your wheelchair and the number of passengers you regularly travel with will both affect the size of vehicle that you need. Below is a summary of the key differences between each of the WAV sizes. As the style and layout of each WAV conversion will vary from supplier to supplier, it is important to see like-for-like WAVs from different suppliers to make sure that the things that matter for you and your family are included in any conversion you are considering. Please note, in this price guide we have split medium WAVs into medium-small and medium-large as there can be significant differences in size and configuration. We are working on applying this format to our online WAV search tool which currently groups all medium WAVs as one category. Search the full range of WAVs and find contact details for all the WAV suppliers at motability.co.uk/wavs. Small From 695 Medium-Small From 995 Base vehicles include: Fiat Qubo; Fiat Doblo; Citroën Berlingo; Peugeot Partner; Ford Tourneo Connect; Kia Soul; Volkswagen Caddy Features: all small WAVs will be fitted with a ramp for entry and they usually have a lowered floor to give more headroom inside the vehicle and reduce the angle of the ramp. They will have at least one passenger seat in the rear, but no more than five. These WAVs tend to feel the most similar to driving a standard car. Base Vehicles include: Volkswagen Caddy Maxi; Ford Grand Tourneo Connect; Vauxhall Combo Features: will have more space than a small WAV which either means extra passenger seats, more room for equipment or a more flexible seating position. Like the Small WAVs these vehicles will have more of a car-like feel in terms of size. With this size WAV, the wheelchair user can be positioned behind the second row of seats in the rearmost part of the car, but many conversions have options to sit further up in between the second row of rear seats. Medium-large From 2,995 Large From 5,395 Base Vehicles include: Citroën Space Tourer; Ford Custom; Peugeot Traveller; Volkswagen Shuttle; Volkswagen Transporter; Renault Trafic; Vauxhall Vivaro Features: these WAVs are based on larger vehicles and are the most common WAV for users with larger wheelchairs as their size allows more flexible seating arrangements. They can carry up to nine passengers including the wheelchair user and driver, and some conversions allow two wheelchair users. The majority of medium-large WAVs are still fitted with a ramp, however if you need a lift these can sometimes be fitted, but you should be aware that there will be reduced head height in these cases. Base Vehicles include: Peugeot Boxer; Renault Master; Fiat Ducato Features: these conversions are based on the largest vehicles available on the scheme and in terms of size are more like a commercial vehicle. The conversions based on these vehicles are good for larger families or those travelling in the largest or heaviest wheelchair.
