7 Low-Speed Vehicle Run Overs (LSVROs) Research Statistics- on par with pool drownings:...over the ten year period from an average of 7 children aged 0-14 were killed and 60 seriously injured [across Australia] every year. (BITRE- Info sheet 43, Nearly 3/week just in QLD. (Kidsafe QLD) Between March and July 2017: 7 fatalities, all children 3 years and younger, all drivers were parents or grandparents. 7

27 Change Vehicles Vehicle Reversing Systems Use a reversing camera as another mirror. Many vehicle manufacturers are beginning to look at reversing systems and AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) for their vehicles to increase safety. Reverse Alert is one example: Remember- no technology can be a replacement for an alert driver!! 27

30 Education Employees and Vehicle Safety If workers go to domestic properties, what is the policy regarding where the vehicle is parked: in the driveway or in the street? Circle of safety? Fleet vehicles: Rear-vision cameras? Reversing systems (AEB)? 30

32 Education 1: Plant operator to ensure the REDZONE is always clear of persons on foot: Ask yourself, Do I need a spotter? Stop if a person on feet enters the REDZONE. 2: If you have to approach moving plant: From outside the REDZONE, establish contact and get acknowledgement from the operator (eg a wave, nod, radio) Wait, do not approach plant until it is stationary. 3: NEVER Assume: Communicate- ask the operator if you need to approach. Communicate- tell the person on foot when it is safe to approach. Communicate- agree when it is safe to resume work. Ute Grader
