Sun Tran Accessible Rider Training (START) Sun Tran offers START, a free bus/streetcar rider training program designed to help individuals with disabilities and seniors gain greater independence by learning how to ride the bus/streetcar. Training covers several areas associated with bus/streetcar travel, and includes a ride on a Sun Tran bus. Please call (520) for more information. 1
Accessible Bus Features All Sun Tran buses are equipped with lifts or ramps for boarding ease. Buses kneel to make boarding more convenient. Each bus can carry a minimum of two mobility devices. Sun Tran buses automatically announce major bus stops, cross streets and transfer locations. Each Sun Link streetcar is equipped with a bridgeplate at a door allowing accessible boarding at stops. The Sun Link bridgeplate is deployed by the customer and can be deployed from the car s interior and exterior. Sun Link streetcars automatically announce major stops. Mobility Devices The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Regulations 49 CFR Parts 37 and 38 governs Transportation 2
Services for Individuals with Disabilities and ADA Specifications for Transit Vehicles. Sun Tran and Sun Link vehicles are built and maintained in adherence with USDOT regulations and can transport all mobility devices regardless of size or weight as long as the lift/ramp and vehicle can physically accommodate them. See definition below. What is a wheelchair? A wheelchair is defined as a mobility aid belonging to any class of three or more wheeled devices, usable indoors, designed or modified for and used by individuals with mobility impairments, whether operated manually or powered. Service Animals Service animals are welcome on Sun Tran and Sun Link with their handlers. Service animal is a guide or service animal as defined by law, including a service animal in training, that has been specially trained to assist persons with disabilities. Handlers are required to keep the service animal under control at all times. When using a vehicles ramp or lift, there may 3
not be room on the platform for a mobility device and your service animal at the same time. For their safety, please have the animal board first. Please keep your service animal as far from the aisle as possible. You may allow your service animal to lie under a nearby seat, or between you and the side of the transit vehicle. Sun Tran and Sun Link reserves the right to deny boarding to any animal that poses a threat to the health and safety of other passengers. Boarding the Bus Plan to arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early. Be sure you are inside the bus shelter or near the bus stop so the coach operator can see you. If you require the use of the lift or ramp, please stay about eight feet away from the bus so that the lift or ramp can be lowered safely. If you need the bus to kneel, please let your coach operator know. 4
To avoid turning around inside the bus, it may be easier to board by backing your device onto the lift or ramp. Please turn off mechanized wheelchairs or scooters and lock the wheels while on the bus lift and once you are in the securement bay. If you are visually impaired, upon boarding we encourage you to ask the coach operator to confirm the route and inform them which bus stop you need. Securing Mobility Devices Sun Tran recommends the use of securement loops for our passengers who use personal mobility devices. When attached to a mobility device, the loops allow the coach operator to determine how to safely secure your wheelchair or scooter inside the bus. See page 10 to find out how to obtain a free set of securement loops. The coach operator will help you fasten your wheelchair or scooter in the securement bay. A three-point securement is recommended to meet safety guidelines. When properly in place, the mobility device must not move more than two inches in any direction. If you prefer to secure your own wheelchair or scooter, the operator will verify that you are safely secured before operating the bus. 5
Once your mobility device is secured, you may move to a seat if you so choose. For your additional safety, we encourage you to use the shoulder strap and lap belt. Exiting the Bus About a block before you d like to deboard, alert the coach operator that you want to exit by pressing the tape or pulling the cord located along the windows. When the bus comes to a stop, you may want to allow other passengers to exit first so the aisle will be free for you to maneuver. The coach operator will release the securement straps and guide you to the door. Boarding a Sun Link Streetcar While at the stop, and if you require the bridgeplate to board, there is a button to the side of the accessible door which enables you to deploy the device. Once deployed, proceed onboard the streetcar. 6
Each streetcar has a designated area for persons using mobility devices. You are encouraged to use this area while on board. 11 Personal Care Attendants (PCAs) Personal Care Attendants (PCAs) can ride free when they are traveling with a client who has a valid SunGO ID & Card that indicates PCA. Segway Only Segways being used as a mobility device by individuals with disabilities are allowed on Sun Tran and Sun Link. Individuals meeting eligibility requirements established by the City of Tucson ADA Paratransit Eligibility Office, will be issued a SunGO ID & Card that indicates, Segway Approved. This ID must be tapped and presented upon boarding. To safely secure a Segway, the use of at least two securement loops is required, but three are preferred.
