4 Battery Box Lighting System Installation Instructions August 2004 Solar Lighting System Installation Instructions 1. Read all manufacturer s safety, installation, and operating instructions. 2. IMPORTANT: Cover PV module with opaque material so the PV module is not energized during the entire installation of this system. 3. Mount PV module on roof as shown on page 4. Attach feet loosely to PV panel, and then to roof ribs. Tighten feet to PV panel. 4. Run wire from PV around the edge of the roof, into wall, out at the bottom of the wall, and into the battery box through the grommet (See Fig. 1). 5. Connect the green grounding wire (using the smaller ring terminal (3/16 )) to a metal stud on building and run other end (the larger ring terminal (1/4 )) of the grounding wire into the battery box through the grommet (See Fig. 1). Attach the battery box to the wall using the two screw holes in the battery box. 7. If the PV module has red and black wires, the red is positive (+) and the black is negative (-). If the PV module has black and white wires, the black is positive (+) and the white is negative (-). Connect PV module positive wire to PV+ and the PV module negative wire to PV- on the PV controller. 8. Place the battery in the battery box with terminals toward the controller (See Fig. 2). 9. 5 Battery Box Lighting System Installation Instructions August Connect the red Battery (+) Positive wire (which is pre-connected to the Controller Battery + ) to the Positive Terminal of the battery (See Fig. 2). The positive contacting the metal box can short the controller, causing severe damage. 11. Uncover PV module. Check indicator lights on the front side of the battery box for proper operation (See SHS Operator s Manual for controller operation and troubleshooting). 12. Plug in light to switched outlet A (Fig. 3) and use wire clips to mount the light wire to the wall and ceiling. Turn on switch to test light. 8 BP SX Watt Multicrystalline Photovoltaic Modules Thesemodulesareavailableinthree configurations: the M configuration, which includes the versatile M ultimountª frame and an output cable; BP SX 30 photovoltaic modules are part of BP SolarÕs S X module series, providing cost-effective photovoltaic power for DC loads with moderate energy requirements. With 36 multicrystalline cells in series, they charge batteries efficiently in virtually any climate. Typical commercial applications of these modules, which generate nominal maximum power of 30 watts respectively, include remote telemetry, instrumentation systems, security sensors, signals, and land-based navigation aids. SX 30 In all configurations, cells are laminated between sheets of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and high-transmissivity low-iron 3mm tempered glass. BP S X 30M The BP SX 20M and 30M are general-purpose PV modules intended for single-module 12-volt applications with DC system voltage not exceeding 30 volts. Output is via a 4.6m (15-foot) PVC-jacketed cable which terminates in a low-profile junction box on the module back. Epoxy-potted in the box, module electrical connections are sealed against corrosion and effectively strain-relieved. Multimount F rame The M ultimountª frame of the BP SX 20M and 30M provides great flexibility in mounting approach. Oriented parallel to the edge and back of the module, its dual channels accept the heads of 5/16" or 8mm hex bolts, allowing the module to be mounted from the side or back. Bolts may be located anywhere along the channels, a configuration which prevents them from turning during tightening and allows installation with just one wrench. T V Universal Frame High-Capacity Versatile Junction Box The large (411cc, 25 cubic inches) junction box of the U modules is raintight (IP54 rated) and accepts PG13.5 or 1/2" nominal conduit or cable fittings. W ith its six-terminal connection block, it enables most system array connections (putting modules in series or parallel) to be made right in the junction box. Optionally, this junction box can be fitted with: blocking and bypass diodes; an oversize terminal block which accepts conductors up to 25mm 2 (AW G #4); standard terminals accept up to 6mm 2 (AWG #10); a Solarstateª charge regulator. The BP SX 20U and 30U junction box may be field-wired to provide 12V or 6V nominal output. Six-volt modules are intended to support 6V loads, and are not recommended as series elements in higher voltage arrays. The BP SX 20U and 30U are approved by Factory M utual R esearch for application in NE C Class 1, Division 2, Groups C & D hazardous locations.
