DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGY!
Brief History of EVs 1884: Thomas Parker builds the first practical electric car 1899: Camille Jenatzy achieves 106 km/h in an electric car. 1910: almost 40% of cars in the USA are electric (~34,000). Horses soon gone from our streets. 1912: Internal combustion engine cars roll out 1972: Oil crisis triples petrol prices 1973: AEVA was formed 1996: GM builds the Impact EV (EV1) 2000: Lithium rechargeable batteries hit the market : Tesla build and release the Roadster Today over 2 million plug-in vehicles on the road!
Most obvious benefits of EVs EVs are powered by locally produced electricity (no need to import energy) The infrastructure already exists (cf. H 2 ) Cheap to run (under 3 c/km versus >11 c/km) Virtually no service costs! You can breathe the air behind an EV and not die Tesla Model S in Melbourne
Energy
Energy is the potential to do work The Joule is the SI unit of energy equal to: The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 0.24 C The amount of energy dissipated through a current of 1 amp, at 1 volt, for 1 second The Watt is a measure of power; energy use over time; 1 watt = 1 joule per second The kilowatt hour is a unit of energy; 3.6 MJ. 1 kilowatt hour is the energy dissipated by a 1 kw iron for 1 hour The amount of energy generated by a small solar array in 30 minutes Will drive an electric car about 5 km on the highway.
Electric vehicles convert chemical energy stored in the battery into electromechanical energy to do work. How they work:
Gasoline Electric Vehicle Efficiency Crude oil must be refined (using electricity) 60% petrol, rest is diesel and gases 1 litre takes ~2 kwh of electricity to refine Contains 10 kwh of energy; drives you ~15 kilometres Electricity Can come from the sun, wind, waves, gas, coal, nuclear or wood Transmission and distribution 94% efficient EVs charged at ~95% efficiency 10 kwh drives you ~50 km
Emissions from driving an EV An electric vehicle charged from the National Electricity Market, or from the SWIS will STILL emit less CO 2 per kilometre than an equivalent sized petrol or diesel car.
What about emissions from manufacturing?
Are batteries toxic? Lithium is not a heavy metal! EVs use almost ZERO heavy or rare earth metals Cobalt, nickel and manganese must be mined, smelted and processed (SO 2 emissions not good at all!) Australia has these metals, and lithium in abundance ALL parts of a Li-ion battery are recycled
EV growth (hint: it s unstoppable now!)
Globally: 1.5 million EVs and PHEVs By Mariordo (Mario Roberto Durán Ortiz) - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0,
