Electricity and Circuits Science Unit 1 For Special Education Hands-On Low Prep Easy to Use Created by Positively Autism Making Learning Fun and Meaningful for Children with Autism

Thank You for Downloading This Product! This product is a collaboration with Aspire Robotics. Check out their page for more science and autism resources!

Electricity and Circuits Science Unit For Special Education Introduce basic concepts about electricity and circuits with this printable, hands-on activity set. Please note that some of the descriptions of electricity are simplified to ensure that the language used is very clear and concrete to maximize understanding by students with autism who have challenges with language. Includes background info for teachers, so you can just print the pages and start the lessons with almost no prep! You can also just show the pages on a tablet, computer or phone screen. Each page has everything on it that you need to say and do with your student. When you see a blank, you student can write in the answer or be prompted to say it out loud. Clip Art by These activities are best used with these resources. You will need a circuit kit like the one pictured for a few of the activities. You can find this kit for a very inexpensive price at online retailers such as Amazon.com and you ll be able to use it for many months. 5 Lesson 1: What Is Electricity?

What is Electricity? Electricity is an energy that is used to give power to many things: lights, TVs, computers, tablets, and more. Another way to define electricity is the flow of electric charge. Electricity moves around in a circuit. In this picture, electricity moves from the batteries to a light bulb. This makes the light bulb turn on. bulb batteries

Let s review what electricity is. Electricity is an that is used to give power to many things:, TVs,, tablets, and more. Another way to define electricity is the flow of electric. Electricity moves around in a. In this picture, electricity moves from the to a light. This makes the light bulb. bulb batteries

What Can Electricity Do? Electricity can give power to lots of things. Here are a few examples you can build. A motor (with a spinner attached). A speaker. This speaker will not make sound in this arrangement. It s just to show an example. A light bulb.

Lesson 2: What Is a Circuit?

What is a Circuit? A circuit is a path or loop that electricity flows around. The arrows show the path the electricity moves from the batteries to the motor. motor batteries

What Can You Remember About a Circuit? A is a path or loop that flows around. The arrows show the path the electricity moves from the to the.

Lesson 3: A Circuit Must Be Closed

A Circuit Must Be Closed This means that all the parts of the circuit must be connected. If a piece is taken out, the circuit is called broken and electricity can not flow. The bulb will not turn on in a broken circuit. Closed Circuit The light bulb is on. Broken Circuit The light bulb is off.

A Circuit Must Be Closed The motor will spin if all parts of the circuit are connected. Will the motor spin? Yes Will the motor spin? No

A Circuit Must Be Closed The motor will spin if all parts of the circuit are connected. Will the motor spin? Will the motor spin?

A Circuit Must Be Closed The motor will spin if all parts of the circuit are connected. Will the motor spin? Will the motor spin?

What Did You Learn About Closed Circuits? A circuit means that all the parts of the circuit must be connected. If a piece is taken out, the circuit is called and electricity can not flow. The bulb will not turn on in a circuit. Closed Circuit The light bulb is. Broken Circuit The light bulb is.

Lesson 4: Circuit Diagrams

Circuit Diagram A circuit diagram is a drawing of a circuit. A circuit diagram uses a different picture for each part of the circuit. bulb batteries battery bulb

Circuit Diagram Here is another circuit diagram for a motor with a spinner on it. motor M motor batteries battery

Circuit Diagram Here are the symbols you have learned so far. M motor battery bulb Can you name these symbols? M

Draw a Circuit Diagram of this Circuit Draw it in the black box on this page, or use another piece of paper.
