Therefore, what happens in this sector will exert a significant impact on the country s overall growth of copper consumption. 3 CHINA THE OUTLOOK FOR COPPER IN POWER CABLES TO 2020 Since 1990, copper used in the production of power cables has increased by an annual average of 13% a year up to 2008; and in the period by 14% a year. Within these average growth rates, since 2000 HV cables have grown by an average of 35% a year whereas copper used in LV and MV cables have increased by 12% and 13% a year respectively. One of the features of the last twelve years has been the falling share of aluminum conductors used for LV and MV, in fact, declining from 25% and 27% to 17% and 18% respectively up to However with copper prices rising so rapidly together with its increasing volatility, aluminum conductors are starting to regain market share in line with global practices. The State Grid Company accounts for some 85% of power cable orders. It has an ambitious target, not just to improve the grid network in cities and towns, but to extend and improve the grid network within the rural sector. The question is how much of this program will be using copper conductors. In this regard, there are three main developments. How much share will Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced Cables (ACSR) account for the total especially in the rural sector? Will aluminium continue its pace in regaining market share from copper in LV and MV cables? When will the development of High Temperature Super Conductors (HTS) and their Components reach the stage that they will be introduced commercially in China. What will be the impact from the new technologies such as nanotubes, conductive polymers and graphite film on copper consumption? These developments could have a material effect on the use of copper in the national grid over the coming decade. What's more, China State Grid Corporation (SGC) also plans to develop a Smart Grid. How this development will impact the use of conductor materials will be examined also. Expert Comment: Utilities are demanding all-aluminum solutions all over the world. According to senior executives in major global wire and cable companies, copper has lost around 1 million tonnes in power and specialty cables since 2006 to aluminium and fibre optics (in telecom cable). The General Manager of the Shanghai Electric Cable Research Institute (SECRI), the country s leading institute for wires and cables research, design and testing, stated in November 2009, We expect the first superconductor cable deployment in China s power grid to occur early in the next decade and that this will lead to widespread adoption of superconductors throughout China. The technical and economic advantages of employing HTS cables are numerous and include the following: Zero electrical resistance implying zero energy losses. Conducts over 150 times the electrical current of copper cables of the same dimensions. A dramatic reduction in the size of the cable and thus weight of associated equipment. Power throughput is significantly increased. HTS cables can be used in existing infrastructures (underground tunnels and conduits) because of their small size. High power capacity at lower voltage so enabling easier siting and reduced ancillary system costs.
