6 single-stage vs. two-stage How to choose a snow thrower When choosing a snow thrower you have two options: single-stage and two-stage. Single-Stage Clearing System Single-stage snow throwers require smooth surfaces for operation. The adjustable and reversible scraper is set so the auger contacts the ground when the bail is engaged and the handle is slightly elevated. The snow is drawn into the snow thrower, channeled through the auger housing, and discharged through the clog-resistant polymer chute at the same time the unit is being propelled forward. These are ideal for small driveways, sidewalks and steps. two-stage Clearing System Two-stage snow throwers are heavier and clear a wider path. They have a slow-turning metal auger that draws in the snow, which is then pulled up by a high-speed impeller and propelled out of the chute. The auger on a two-stage snow thrower doesn t touch the ground so it can be used on gravel when the skid shoes are fully lowered.
