7 Ensure at least 3 (7.5 cm) of air space is maintained on all sides of the power system. During operation, ensure the unit is not near or covered by materials that can cause high temperatures such as blankets, pillows, and sleeping bags. Make sure there is minimum of 3 of unblocked air space around the entire surface of the inverter at all times. The inverter may become warm reaching a temperature of 140 F (60 C) under high power operation. DO NOT place any materials near the inverter that could be easily damaged by heat. Never install the inverter in a zero-clearance environment, as doing so may cause overheating of the inverter. EQUIPMENT DAMAGE DO NOT connect the inverter to live AC power circuits or any AC device with neutral conductor connected to ground, to avoid damage to the inverter, even if the inverter is switched off. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING WITH BATTERIES Follow all instructions mentioned by the manufacturer to avoid explosion of the battery. EXPLOSION AND FIRE HAZARD DO NOT work near lead-acid batteries, as the batteries generate explosive gases during normal operation. DO NOT drop a metal tool on the battery, as doing so can create spark or short circuit in the battery or other electrical parts, resulting in battery explosion. While removing the battery, make sure to remove grounded terminal from the battery and disconnect other electrical connections. When working with lead-acid batteries, always have someone nearby in case of an emergency. NEVER operate the inverter near flammable items or explosives, such as in a cabin of a gasoline powerboat, near propane/fuel tanks, in compartments containing batteries of flammable materials, locations that require ignition-protected equipment, joints, fittings, or any connections between fuel system components. This inverter contains components which tend to produce arcs or sparks. Make sure the area around the battery and engine is well-ventilated and free from sparks or flames. NEVER smoke while handling the inverter. DO NOT operate the inverter in an enclosed area containing automotive type lead-acid batteries. These types of batteries emit explosive hydrogen gas that can be ignited by sparks. To prevent the risk of sparks, DO NOT remove the battery with any of the accessories attached. CHEMICAL HAZARD Remove all metal items such as rings, bracelets, and watches when working with the lead-acid batteries. The batteries may produce short circuit current that can weld metals, thereby causing severe burns on skin. Make sure there is plenty of fresh water, soap, and baking soda near the work area. If a person s skin or clothing accidentally makes contact with battery acid, wash immediately with baking soda, soap, and water. If the acid enters the eye, wash immediately with cold, running water for a minimum of twenty minutes and get medical attention immediately. Always wear complete eye and clothing protection. Avoid touching your eyes while working with the batteries. Page 7 of 19

8 EQUIPMENT DAMAGE Connect the inverter to batteries with a normal output of 12V DC only. The inverter will not operate if connected to a 6V battery and will be damaged if connected to a 24V battery. DO NOT insert any foreign objects into the outlets, vents, or fan openings of the inverter. DO NOT use the inverter in temperatures over 40 C (104 F) or under -10 C (14 F). Grounding WARNING This machine must be grounded while in use to protect the operator from electrical shock. This unit is equipped with an electrical cord that has an equipment grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug MUST be plugged into a matching receptacle that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with ALL local codes and ordinances. DO NOT MODIFY THE PROVIDED PLUG. If it will not fit the receptacle. Have the proper receptacle installed by a qualified electrician. CHECK with a qualified electrician or service person if you do not completely understand the grounding instructions, or if you are not sure the tool is properly grounded. Grounded Tools: Tools with 3-Prong Plugs Tools marked with Grounding Required have a 3-wire cord and 3-prong grounding plug. The plug must be connected to a properly grounded outlet. If the tool should electrically malfunction or break down, grounding provides a low resistance path to carry electricity away from the user, reducing the risk of electric shock. (See Figure A.) The grounding prong in the plug is connected through the green wire inside the cord to the grounding system in the tool. The green wire in the cord must be the only wire connected to the tool s grounding system and must never be attached to an electrically live terminal. Your tool must be plugged into an appropriate outlet, properly installed and grounded in accordance with all codes and ordinances. The plug and outlet should look like those in the following illustration. Double Insulated Tools: Tools with Two-Prong Plugs Tools marked Double Insulated do not require grounding. They have a special double insulation system which satisfies OSHA requirements and complies with the applicable standards of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., the Canadian Standard Association, and the National Electrical Code. If acid enters your eyes, immediately flood them with cold running water for at least twenty minutes and seek Page 11 of 19

12 medical attention immediately. Keep a supply of baking soda on hand when working with the batteries. Baking soda neutralizes lead-acid battery electrolytes. Equipment Damage When unit is supplying back-up power from its batteries, its output is a non-sinusoidal modified sine wave, which is different from pure sine wave utility-supplied electricity. Certain types of load equipment which require true sine wave power may be damaged. Most rechargeable battery-operated equipment uses a separate charger or transformer that is plugged into an AC receptacle and produces a low voltage charging output. However, some chargers for rechargeable batteries can be damaged if connected to the power system. DO NOT use the following with the power system: Small battery-operated products such as flashlights, electric razors, and night lights that can be plugged directly into an AC receptacle to recharge. Some chargers for battery packs used in power tools. These chargers display a warning label stating that dangerous voltages are present at the battery terminals.
