2 Innovation and on-going research The PASS M00 module is the latest arrival in the PASS family. PASS M00 is the tangible result of the experience acquired by ABB in the field of multifunctional modules for High Voltage substations. PASS M00 also represents the cutting edge when it comes to the technological innovation achieved by ABB with multifunctional modules for High Voltage applications. And this is especially true of multifunctional units with unique innovative features used in conjunction with components and technologies of tried and tested reliability. The functional specifications 910 PASS M00 combines all the typical functions of a complete AIS bay for electrical substations with voltage ratings up to 100 kv in a unit whose volume is comparable to that of a conventional circuit-breaker of equal class. It uses and widens the scope of the operating philosophy of the PASS series whose dominating factors, those that have definitely established the product s success with over 800 risers sold throughout the world in just three years, are briefly outlined below: all the functions of a bay are combined in a single module the operating and interrupting functions are integrated within a housing in SF6 the product is fully transportable and easy to install utmost reliability guaranteed by GIS technology extremely versatile when substation layouts/planning solutions are drafted GJA700039

3 The single line diagram In the version for electrical substations with a single bus-bar, PASS M00 s line diagram layout corresponds to the drawing in the picture, which shows: the synchronous bus-bar; line disconnector the circuit-breaker; the current transformer; The single- line diagram shows how PASS M00 differs from the series in the higher class (PASS M0) as disconnection can be achieved on both sides of the circuit-breaker. This occurs in the synchronous mode thanks to the way the mobile contacts rotate by means of a single drive. Versatile operation Similarly to the higher class PASS series, PASS M00 features versatile operation that knows no rivals in the field of High Voltage components. PASS M00 offers series of modules for HV substations featuring a single bus-bar, plus another series with a double bus-bar. Here again, PASS M00 can be used as a multifunctional module for substation layouts such as the incoming and outcoming one with a single HV component. Moreover, PASS M00 can be supplied with a cable bushing of the GIS type. In view of its low weight, PASS M00 can be used for wall mounted applications. This means that segregated High Voltage cells occupying more or less the same space as a medium voltage cell in air of the old type can now be obtained. This application is undoubtedly the ideal way to solve the problem of upgrading in many industrial installations that currently operate with Medium Voltage. Last but not least, PASS M00 can also be used as a HV bay on a mobile truck, available in emergencies or if work must be carried out on already installed HV bays. This latter application naturally extends to integration of the PASS M00 module into the power transformer to form mobile substations with up to 100 kv power ratings in a single trailer. 4 Impact on the environment PASS M00 is environment-friendly. It has been designed in compliance with the philosophy of the PASS project, which combines functional and reliable systems with use of highly recyclable, non-energy consuming materials with a low impact on the environment. Where materials with different characteristics had to be used, the greatest care was taken to obtain good performances while limiting the impact on the environment as compared to that exercised by similar conventional components. Typical examples are composite insulators. Since they are much smaller and lighter, and provide higher performances than porcelain insulators, they lead to a drastic reduction in the use of the other materials that make up HV electrical substations, such as foundation materials and the bearing structures of the module. The fact that several functions are integrated together also achieves an equally evident, drastic and global reduction in the impact on the environment. This is because all the materials that contribute towards forming the typical conventional bay (such as the steel used to make the supports, the porcelain of the insulators, the concrete of the foundations, copper of the conductors and the aluminium used to connect the components together, etc.) are completely eliminated. Since the module is extremely small in size, it can also be used to build installations where the live parts and extremities of the system are further away from each other. This minimises the effect of the electromagnetic fields beyond the actual installation itself. Life Cycle Cost The CEI Standards that stem from Standard IEC300-3 act as guidelines when calculating the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) of a product (an example is shown in the figure). Since 1999, ABB has also been using a calculation method that allows the cost of the entire life cycle of an installation (Initial Cost of the investment, Fixed Charges for management and preventive maintenance, Variable Costs due to corrective maintenance following faults) to be evaluated with mathematical methods, and to thus plan its innovative products with a view to reducing the global life cycle cost of the installation. PASS M00 is therefore the ultimate answer to this approach in technological terms. It is mainly dedicated to Managers, or people who must compare performances and relative costs throughout the entire life cycle of the actual product, and not the mere technical aspects: products are no longer considered as a technological end to themselves, but become part of the operating context of a process, to whose profitability they are strongly linked. As an example, just think of a conventional bay installed in an HV/MV substation in an operating cement works: the cost for lack of production when the system is out of service would be about 3 times higher than the cost of installing PASS M00. Similarly, PASS M00 is more reliable since it is less liable to become faulty. Moreover, it needs servicing less frequently throughout the life of the installation and maintenance work can be carried out much faster. If these features are considered in relation to the process on the load side of the installation, it will be evident that PASS M00 is able to achieve remarkably interesting financial savings. 5 The components Circuit-breaker PASS M00 uses a self-blast type circuit-breaker. The energy to operate on CB is provided by a three-pole spring mechanism (BLK82) already used for conventional circuit-breakers of the same and superior classes like PASS M0 and COMPASS with single-pole drive. All this ensures highly reliable operation, as testified by the thousands of controls of the same type installed in ABB s circuit-breakers throughout the world. Spring drive Disconnector drive Window used to inspect the disconnector contacts Combined disconnector PASS M00 extends the disconnecting concept using the same single drive as in PASS M0 series and allows the user to double disconnect the circuit-breaker on both sides by means of a single synchronous operation. This is the innovation provided by PASS M00 and it has been achieved by partially turning the arcing chamber within the tank. The technology is the same as that used for larger, GIS bays. It therefore represents an absolute innovation, but one achieved through on-going experience. PASS M00 takes advantage of the same concept for systems with double bus-bars, where the disconnecting function covers the two bus-bars and the incoming feeder/transformer. The synchronous disconnector also ensures that the feeder is earthed through the circuit-breaker or, if required, the bus-bar, by turning the mobile contacts to a further extent. Note how all the manoeuvres described above take place in SF 6 atmosphere. This provides further guarantees as to reliability and fade-free withstanding properties regardless of the conditions outside. The disconnector s position can be seen through the window at the bottom of the tank. 2GJA

6 Current transformers Here again, the current transformer makes use of PASS technology and is the ring type. Several cores can be installed, to suit the end customers specifications. The transformer is generally fitted to the front bushing, but can also be installed on the rear one to comply with specific requirements. SF 6 insulation system PASS M00 technology includes use of a small quantity of SF 6 to obtain the insulating and breaking parameters required to operate the module. Each pole features a bursting disk with a particularly precise activation threshold. This prevents over-pressures of the pulsing type from reaching values that could jeopardise the installation and surrounding environment, thus guaranteeing the utmost safety during operation. Along with the gas monitoring system, the product is fitted with a pressure gauge-densimeter to measure and monitor the density of the gas in the tank. Quality Certification Composite bushings The success of the PASS M0 series has also been due to use of composite insulator bushings which, as compared to the porcelain ones, provide absolutely unrivalled performances, particularly in strongly polluting environments. Just think of the hydrophobic characteristic of silicone, the material used to make the sheds, characteristic that is continuously regenerated as polluting substances settle. It is also worthwhile remembering that these insulators are safer (explosion proof) and less fragile, an essential feature if the problems caused by transport are to be avoided. PASS M00 is manufactured in compliance with the dictates established by the current ISO 9001 and ISO standards. The parts that are not produced by ABB itself are subjected to strict inspections on arrival while the relative suppliers are chosen from amongst enterprises that comply with the current quality standards applied to products. PASS M00 is completely assembled and tested in the factory in compliance with the following international Standards: IEC Standards pertaining to the components involved ISO 9001 and CENELEC EN IEC Certificates attesting to the type tests conducted are available on request. 6-2GJA700039

7 Installation method The installation sequence illustrated in the photos on this page show how versatile PASS M00 is and how easily it can be handled. The module reaches the building site in a standard vehicle, to which the local control panel and power module are fixed. 1. The module reaches the building site in a standard vehicle, in two parts: the main stand, to which the local control panel is fixed, and the power module. 2. The stand is unloaded and installed on site by means of chemical anchors or rods. After this, the module is unloaded from the vehicle and positioned on the stand by the crane attachment on the vehicle itself. 3. The module can now be fixed in place and the panel s power conductors and auxiliary equipment connected. 4. Once the conductors and auxiliary equipment have been connected, the module is ready for functional tests. It can then be powered and operated. The entire installation can be completed in less than half a day. There s no need to make comparisons with the time it takes to install a conventional bay: PASS M00 is certainly the winning technology. Conclusions The advantages of PASS M00 are briefly outlined below: use of standard components for applications of the GIS type operating functions insulated in SF 6 small size and highly versatile use quick to install and minimum maintenance required highly compatible with the environment as compared to conventional solutions lower life cycle cost than conventional installations.
