6 Infrastructure Improvements Bristol Parkway railway Station Improvements Metrobus Bristol Parkway railway station is one of two mainline railway stations in Bristol with direct services to London Paddington with current journey times of 90 minutes as well as other main line destinations throughout the UK. The Bristol area is to be served by a new generation of rapid transport Metrobus services from 2017 with a route linking Bristol Parkway, with the city centre and South Bristol. Enabling works are underway which will dramatically improve transport options for the Parkway area. Bristol Parkway has recently undergone extensive improvements to the station building and in 2014 a new 710 space multi-storey car park was opened. The station also provides secure cycle storage and cycle hire facilities. Bristol Parkway is also a major transport hub for North Bristol with suburban rail and bus services operating throughout the area. In 2017 Metrobus services will commence operation from Bristol Parkway providing a high speed link to Bristol City centre and South Bristol. Road Improvements Works to construct the Stoke Gifford bypass are now underway linking The A4174 Filton Road close to The University of the West of England with the roundabout at the junction of Great Stoke Way and Hunts Ground Road. This will assist traffic flow in the area and will provide greater traffic choices between the Filton and Stoke Gifford area and the M32 Motorway Junction 1 and the M4/M5b Motorway interchange. The road is due to be open by mid London Paddington to Swansea Rail Electrification Electrification works are already underway between London Paddington and Swansea which will see journey times reduced to approximately 75 minutes and increased capacity on the rail network. The line to Bristol Parkway will be electrified by the end of 2016 with new Hitachi electric trains running by 2018 improving speed, frequency and comfort of rail services..
