High aircraft endurance and range ensure radar coverage across huge areas around the fleet. Full integration via data link with the U.S. Task Force ensures fleet commanders see radar imagery in real time. Besides an anti-surface warfare role, the Merlins also are reconfigured quickly at sea for casualty evacuation, search and rescue and troop transport. Summer 2003 with NATO peacekeepers in Bosnia British Royal Air Force EH101 Merlins self-deploy from the UK to fly in extreme temperatures at high altitudes ( hot and high ). Secondary missions: aerial surveillance, load lifting and VIP transport. Winter miles off the coast of Canada January 23, the Finnish freighter Camilla founders, powerless in 50-mile-an-hour winds. Sixteen sailors are stranded as the freighter rocks dangerously in 40-ft swells. A 101 Cormorant helicopter with a Canadian rescue team hovers for 70 minutes above the pitching deck, harnessing and raising the sailors one and two at a time. Safely aboard, the 101 rushes them to Newfoundland three hours away. The 101 is already operational in military, civil, and search and rescue roles in Britain, Canada, Italy and Japan. It has operated with NATO forces in Bosnia and with allied forces in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.When lives have hung in the balance, the 101 has proven itself repeatedly. In international competitions, the 101 is a true winner. Recently, Portugal and Denmark selected the 101 over competitors. Japan has ordered a military variant.
