3 MIL-DTL-5015 Series III The MIL-DTL-5015 Series III connectors provide aerospace performance and reliability for general purpose power inter-connection requirements. Originally a World War II solder connector, its revision since then has resulted in a 5015 series of widespread use in applications requiring gauges 0 to. There are 19 shell sizes from size 8 to 40, with over 159 approved insert arrangements per MIL-STD-51, incorporating 1 to 854 box mount, cable connecting and jam nut receptacles, and standard or self-locking plugs. The hard plastic socket interface features the chamfered conical entry that aids in the proper mating of contacts. The fluorosilicone interfacial seal has conical risers around each pin contact, that compress into the socket interface, assuring the seal of the mating surface. Various shell materials and finishes are available. 34 MIL-DTL Series III The MIL-DTL Series III has both bayonet and threaded coupling configurations to meet both general purpose and swamp applications when excessive moisture, fluids, shock, and vibration exposure require a threaded connector. It is available in nine shell sizes with either square flange or jam nut receptacles, standard or RFI plugs in both bayonet and threaded versions. There are thirty insert arrangements using 2 to 61 contacts. 20,, and gauge contact sizes terminate wire gauges 24 through. The hard plastic socket interface features the chamfered conical entry that aids in the proper contact mating. The fluorosilicone interfacial seal has conical risers around each pin contact that compress into the socket interface to ensure the seal of the mating surface. Black anodize, electroless nickel, and chromate over cadmium finishes are available for the aluminum shells. 58 MIL-DTL The MIL-DTL connectors are available in bayonet and threaded coupling configurations for both general purpose and swamp applications where the excessive moisture, shock, fluids, and vibration exposure require a threaded connector. The bayonet coupling version employs three ramps at a 0 degree angle, equally spaced to make the connector quicker to mate than other connectors. 20,, and gauge contact sizes terminate wire 24 through gauge. Environmental sealing is provide by an O-ring seal and displacement of the resilient interfaces when the connectors are mated, as well as redundant rear wiper seals around each wire. 82 Background The cause of failure on an aircraft external power receptacle connector is the coupling method between the aircraft ground receptacle and the ground power plug. The physical engagement of the electrical contact pins on the aircraft fixed connector and the socket contacts on the ground supply free connector maintains the external power connector's coupling causing this failure. The sphincter or grabbing action of the high force socket contacts within the ground supply free connector causes premature excess wear on the pin contacts contained in the aircraft fixed connector. Additional failure is caused by the sheer weight of the ground supply free connector, which pulls down on the electrical interface causing arcing when the power is on. Replacement of either the aircraft fixed connector and/or the ground supply free connector is a significant loss to the airline and/or airport.
