2 General There were 4,012 public inputs (PI) submitted to NFPA recommending changes to the 2017 NEC and 1,235 First Revisions (FR) resulted Public Comments were submitted and 559 Second Revisions (SR) were produced. There were 9 articles proposed and 5 new articles appear in the 2017 NEC National Electrical Code Only 2

4 Article 90 Introduction 90.3 Code Arrangement This Code is divided into the introduction and nine chapters, as shown in Figure Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 apply generally. Chapters 5, 6, and 7 apply to special occupancies, special equipment, or other special conditions and may supplement or modify the general requirements in Chapters 1 through 7. Only 4
5 90.7 Examination of Equipment For Safety A new last sentence has been added to the second paragraph of Section The words that are compatible with this Code have been added to Informational Note No. 3. The revision clarifies that suitability of equipment is related to application of requirements in standards that are consistent with NEC rules. Only 5
6 Chapter 1 General Definitions Relocated Multiple definitions previously located in have been relocated to Article 100. In general, Section of the NEC Style Manual requires that if a term appears in more than two articles is shall be included in Article 100. The words [as applied to Hazardous (Classified) Locations] have been added following each relocated defined term, but before the definition. Only 6
7 Article 100 Field Evaluation Terms Definitions of the terms Field Evaluation Body (FEB) and Field Labeled have been incorporated into Article 100. The NEC Style Manual indicates that terms appearing in more than two articles qualify for definitions in Article 100. These definitions have been developed from concepts derived from terms in NFPA 790 Standard for Competency of Third-Party Field Evaluation Bodies. Only 7
8 Article 100 Field Evaluation Body Field Evaluation Body (FEB). An organization or part of an organization that performs field evaluations of electrical or other equipment. [NFPA 790, 2012] (CMP-1) Article 100 Field Labeled Field Labeled (as applied to evaluated products). Equipment or materials to which has been attached a label, symbol, or other identifying mark of an FEB indicating the equipment or materials were evaluated and found to comply with requirements as described in an accompanying field evaluation report. (CMP-1) Only 8
9 110.3(C) Listed The title of has been revised to include listing (product certification) A new Subdivision (C) and associated informational note have been added to Section The revision clarifies that listing (product certification) be performed by recognized qualified electrical testing laboratories and the new informational note indicates that OSHA provides a list of such qualified laboratories. 10 110.16(B) Service Equipment A new (B) titled Service Equipment and informational note have been added to The provisions in now required more installationrelated detail and information for determining arc-flash energy levels and required PPE. The informational note references NFPA 70E for specific criteria related to arc-flash labels and determining appropriate PPE (B) Service Equipment In other than dwelling units, addition to the requirements in (A), a permanent label shall be field or factory applied to service equipment rated 1200 amperes or more. The label shall meet the requirements of (B) and contain the following information: Nominal system voltage Available fault current (see NEC text) The clearing time (see NEC text) The date the label was applied Exception: Service equipment labeling shall not be required if an arc flash label is applied in accordance with industry practice. 11 110.21(A)(2) Reconditioned Equipment The title of subdivision (A) has been changed from Manufacturer s Markings to Equipment Markings. Section (A) has been renumbered as list items (1) and a new list item (2) with a new exception and Informational Note. New list item (2) provides marking requirements for reconditioned equipment including the responsible organization, and date of reconditioning. Only 11
12 110.26(A)(4) Limited Access A new provision for Limited Access was added to address equipment located in a space with limited access, such as above a suspended ceiling or in a crawl space. Applies to equipment above lay-in ceilings. Minimum space required in front of the enclosures. Only 12
13 Inspections and Tests A new section titled Inspections and Tests has been added to Part III of Article 110. Pre-energization and operational testing of the complete system is required when equipment is first installed on site. Test results must be made available to those authorized to install, operate, test, and maintain the system. Only 13
14 Chapter 2 Wiring and Protection Only 14
15 210.11(C)(4) Garage Branch Circuits A new (C)(4) has been added to require at least one 20-amp branch circuit to supply garage receptacle outlet(s). The previous prohibition to supply an outdoor receptacle from the garage circuit is deleted in (G)(1) Only 15
16 210.52(C)(3) Peninsular Countertop Spaces (C) is revised to apply to Countertops and Work Surfaces Peninsular countertops are no longer measured from the connecting edge, they are measured from the connected perpendicular wall The width of the connecting countertop is now added to the peninsular countertop long dimension Only 16
17 Overhead Service Conductors- Supports Over Buildings Revisions to require metal support racks or structures to be bonded by means of a bonding jumper and listed connector to the grounded overhead service conductor for grounded systems. Size bonding jumper according to minimum requirements in Article 250. Only 17
18 240.24(A) Accessibility This revision clarifies that switches containing fuses and circuit breakers, not overcurrent devices, must be readily accessible with operating handles not more than 6 7 high. Fuses installed in a fused disconnect and CB s in panelboards etc. are readily accessible. A new exception clearly permits the use of a tool to access overcurrent devices within listed industrial control panels or similar enclosures. Only 18
19 Arc Energy Reduction New rule requires arc-energy reduction methods of incident energy reduction for fuses. Energy reduction requirement reduces incident energy for circuit breakers rated 1200 ampere and greater have been well established. Methods of incident energy reduction will now be required for 1200 ampere and greater fusible switches Arc Energy Reduction This requirement has a delayed implementation of January 1, 2020 to permit the industry to develop feasible solutions methods to reduce arc energy are similar to those in with an additional provision permitting a fuse that would open the circuit in 0.07 seconds or less, at or below the available arcing current. 20 250.52(A)(2) Metal In-Ground Support Structure(s) Section (A)(2) has been revised and simplified to apply metal in-ground building or structure supports that function as grounding electrodes. The previous text related to structural metal building frames above the earth has been removed. The revision aligns this section with the definition of the term grounding electrode in Article 100. Only 20
21 250.52(B) Not Permitted for Use as Electrode(s) Section (B) provides a list of items that are not permitted for use as grounding electrodes. A new list item (3) has been added to Section (B). The structures and reinforcing steel for in-ground pools are not permitted to used in the required grounding electrode system of a building or structure. Only 21
22 250.94(B) Other Means Section has been reformatted into two subdivisions including a new exception and informational note. Subdivision (A) contains the previous requirements and has been titled intersystem bonding termination device. Subdivision (B) is titled Other Means and recognizes use of a listed ¼ x 2 inch copper busbar Only 22
23 (A) Metal Water Piping Section (A) has been restructured into a list format Section (A) has been revised by adding the wording if or sufficient size to (A)(3) and (A)(4). The minimum sizes of the bonding conductor or jumper must be in accordance with Table (C)(1) rather than Table Only 23

29 Electronic switches such as occupancy sensors are not permitted to introduce current on the equipment grounding conductor. New section added in Part III Construction Specifications for switches. Future effective date of January 1, (E) Controlled Receptacle Marking The marking shall be located to clearly indicate each controlled receptacle and be visible after installation Note: The marking still does not include clear indication of automatic control, just a power symbol. 32 517.2 Patient Care Space The defined terms under the main definition of Patient Care Space have been revised and informational notes follow each term. The revisions incorporate numerical categories (1 through 4) in parenthesis following each definition and the bracketed information contains the location of the extract. The revision aligns Article 517 with terms defined and used within NFPA 99 Heath Care Code Patient Care Space Patient Care Space. Any space within a health care facility wherein patients are intended to be examined or treated. [99: ] Basic Care Space (Category 3 Space). Space in which failure is not likely to cause injury to the patients, staff, or visitors but can cause patient discomfort. [99: ] General Care Space (Category 2 Space). Space in which failure is likely to cause minor injury to patients, staff, or visitors. [99: ] Only 32

Protected where subject to physical damage Definitions Wireless Power Transfer (WPT): The transfer of electrical energy from a power source to an electrical load via electric and magnetic fields or waves by a contactless inductive means between a primary and a secondary device. Wireless Power Transfer Equipment (WPTE): Equipment consisting of a charger power converter and a primary pad. The two devices are either of the following: Interconnected by an output cable or suitable conduit system Contained within a single enclosure without an output cable or other suitable wiring means Only 35
36 Article 691 Article Large-Scale Photovoltaic (PV) Electric Power Production Facility A large-scale photovoltaic (PV) is designed for the supply of power into the electricity grid. Differs from building-mounted and other decentralized solar power applications in that they supply power at the utility level, rather than to local users. Often referred to as solar farms, especially when sited in agricultural areas. Only 36
