3 Introducing Customers to Time-Varying Pricing Educating customers about upcoming changes in how they are charged for energy can help them adjust their energy usage to lower their bills. It can also make it easier for Trade Professionals to provide customers with the most appropriate energy solutions. PG&E commercial customers with demand greater than 200 kw per month have already begun their transition onto Peak Day Pricing (PDP), a Time-Varying Pricing plan. Many of these customers are accustomed to shifting energy usage to off-peak hours, since they have been required to be on a Time-Varying Pricing plan for some time. In November 2012, business and commercial customers with demand less than 200 kw per month will start transitioning to Peak Day Pricing, unless they select an alternative Time-Varying Pricing option. Once customers have become eligible for the transition, they will no longer have the option of a flat rate. The upper right table outlines the transition dates to Time of Use and Peak Day Pricing for all customer classes. All dates are subject to change pending the California Public Utilities Commission s (CPUC) decision on our petition to modify the original filing. PG&E encourages Trade Professionals to participate in a Time-Varying Pricing webinar to learn more about Time- Varying Pricing and Peak Day Pricing. Dates and times of the webinar sessions can be found at The following summarizes key information your customers will need to know about Time-Varying Pricing and Peak Day Pricing. Customer Group Plan Transition Date Large Commercial and Industrial ( 200 kw) Large Agricultural ( 200 kw) Small Agricultural (< 200kW) Small and Medium Business (< 200 kw) Peak Day Pricing May 1,2010 Peak Day Pricing February 1,2011 Time of Use March 1, 2013 Peak Day Pricing/ Time of Use Time-Varying Pricing Time-Varying Pricing plans create economic incentives for customers to reduce or shift their electricity use to off-peak times early morning, late evening, nighttime and weekends - when energy costs less to generate. This makes customers price of energy more closely matches the cost of energy at the time it is used. Customers will pay lower prices for the energy they use at night and on weekends, when demand is lower and higher prices on weekdays when demand is higher. For business customers, moving electricity use to off-peak times can mean greater control in lowering overall electricity bills. For all California customers, the benefits include increased power reliability; fewer new power plants built, less need to buy power from expensive sources and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. November 1, 2012 Peak Day Pricing PG&E s Peak Day Pricing is a Time- Varying Pricing plan that combines time of use pricing with peak day event surcharges. Time-Varying Pricing plans offer lower rates during periods when electric demand is low and higher rates when demand is high. Peak Day Pricing plans add a surcharge on energy consumed during a portion of the peak period on nine to 15 peak day events each year. Customers will pay more during peak periods of event days and will pay less during all other periods. This plan features day-ahead notification prior to peak day events and bill protection for the first year, so customers can participate without risk. If customers can reduce or shift use away from higher priced peak periods, they may be able to lower their overall electricity bills. PG&E relies on Trade Professionals to help customers learn how the kinds of energy efficiency opportunities and solutions you offer can help them be successful on Time-Varying Pricing plans and save money. 7 Become a CALCTP- Certified Electrician Trade Professional Manager, Chris Tanner, giving a presentation at a recent PG&E Area 2 Trade Pro Networking Event in Concord, CA. Trade Pro Expo Summary In March 2011, PG&E held the first Trade Professional events of 2011 during PG&E regional sales meetings in Fresno and Sacramento. These all-hands gatherings take place once a year in two locations and draw sales representatives from all across PG&E s service territory. There were approximately 60 Trade Pro companies in attendance. Each one was able to showcase its energy management products and services to PG&E representatives. These expos are the first of many Trade Pro events scheduled for Stay tuned for updates on our next round of events by area, which will take place before the end of spring. Trade Professional Events are a great resource for information about PG&E s Energy Management offerings and provide an abundance of networking opportunities. To learn about future Trade Professional events, contact your local Trade Professional Manager or send an to tradeproevents@pge.com. To attend, you must be enrolled in PG&E s Trade Professional Alliance. You can sign up at On September 23, 2010, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) adopted a plan to achieve a percent reduction in the state s energy consumption for electrical lighting. One part of that plan is an aim to increase the use of lighting controls in the 9 billion square feet of space occupied by California s commercial buildings and industrial facilities. The California Advanced Lighting Controls Training Program (CALCTP) was created to prepare electrical contractors and electricians to provide proper installation of lighting controls in commercial buildings and industrial facilities. Advanced lighting controls improve energy efficiency in commercial facilities and save significant amounts of money. CALCTP will educate, train and certify licensed electrical contractors, and state-certified general electricians to design, install and commission advanced lighting control systems. Training programs are currently operating at 21 Joint Apprenticeship Training Centers and six community colleges. To be certified, students must complete online prerequisites and attend 50 hours of training split between classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory work at no cost to qualified electricians, subject to enrollment and availability. CALCTP partner utilities, which serve over 90 percent of the California market, have contributed their expertise to a business development and sales program that helps contractors effectively price a lighting control installation. Once a sufficient number of contractors and general electricians are CALCTP certified, CALCTP partner utilities will require the certification on some projects covered by utility incentive programs. Don t miss out on future business opportunity, become a CALCTP-certified contractor and CALCTP-certified electrician today.
