3 Connected Vehicles U.S. DOT connected vehicle architecture is a framework that enables devices and applications from different providers to seamlessly communicate. Modular Incremental Unlimited number of solutions to improve transportation Developed prototype applications to determine viability. Conducted large-scale test with 3,000 vehicles in a real world environment to confirm technology. 3

4 Connected Vehicles USDOT s primary goal is to improve safety Reduce unimpaired crashes by up to 80%. Just 2 of the applications are expected to save up 1,000 lives and prevent up to 590,000 crashes annually. Provides significant congestion and environmental benefits Relieve constrained infrastructure by increasing highway capacity by %. Reduce travel times and the 5.5 billion hours Americans spend in traffic. Decrease the 2.9 billion gallons in annual fuel waste. 4

5 Connected Automated Vehicles Complimentary technology to autonomous vehicles, providing self-driving vehicles with the safety and efficiency advantages of V2V and V2I communications. Ability to detect non-visible hazards. Vehicles respond in unison for increased efficiency. Manufacturers are offering increased automated acceleration, braking, and steering. Combining these technologies with connected vehicle communications will enable connected automated vehicles. Incremental incorporation. 5

9 Incident Scene Work Zone Alerts for Drivers and Workers (INC ZONE) Improve safety for public safety personnel In-vehicle messaging system provides motorists with merging and speed guidance as they approach an incident scene. Provides motorists with warnings via invehicle communications systems. Provides external warnings if a vehicle approaches outside safe parameters for the conditions. 11 Scenario Example Oncoming vehicle approaches incident zone unsafely on the outside lane at 55 mph. 15 Value and Benefits of this Work Produced enhanced safety for law enforcement and other public safety responders. Confirmed how connected vehicle technology can be effectively integrated into existing responder and public vehicle ecosystems. Demonstrated that connected vehicle technology is feasible and can reliably deliver information, alerts, and warnings. Created foundation for future advancements and connected vehicle safety solutions for emergency responders. 15

16 Future U.S. DOT is working to accelerate deployment of connected vehicles. ITS JPO is funding connected vehicle pilots in real-world test environments throughout the country. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working to complete their rulemaking by 2016 that will require vehicle-to-vehicle communication technology for light vehicles. Cadillac announced that some model year 2017 vehicles will include V2V communications technology. 16
