5 FOREWORD BY THE LORD MAYOR OF NUREMBERG Dear reader, I cordially welcome all participants to E DPC 2012 The 2 ence on Electric Drives Production here in Nuremberg. International Confernd Nuremberg is an international meeting place for researchers, developers and producers. The conditions at the Nuremberg congress location are ideal for exchanging views and developing ideas. The City of Nuremberg is a perfect location for your conference activities. Tackling the global questions that arise from a growing demand in energy and the prevention of man-made climate change, we have to substitute fossil power generation with renewable technologies and dramatically reduce our energy consumption. For the latter, cheap, efficient electric drives are of central importance. Even more so as such drives will soon play a central role in the implementation of electric mobility. Dr. Ulrich Maly Lord Mayor of the City of Nuremberg At the 2 nd International Conference on Electric Drives Production aforementioned efficient electric drives, cost-effective production technologies and electric mobility will be discussed. The Conference is well placed in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region as it is an important European business location with strong clusters in "automation and production", "energy and environment" and "power electronics". I wish the 2 nd International Conference on Electric Drives Production success and the participants interesting, informative and profitable days. I hope you will also find a little time to retire from the hectic daily routine of the meeting and get to know the City of Nuremberg better. Try exploring Nuremberg's varied tourist, cultural and culinary trails and have a pleasant stay. Dr. Ulrich Maly Lord Mayor of the City of Nuremberg 5
6 FOREWORD BY THE CONFERENCE SPONSOR The mandate of sustainability Our entrepreneurship is governed by increasing urbanization, resulting in greater mobility and growing demand for electricity, but at the same time by our concerns for climate protection and reduction of CO2 emissions. Since we focus on mastering those challenges in the best possible way I was especially alarmed to hear that global carbon dioxide emissions in 2011 were the highest ever recorded. Did we not take our mandate of sustainability seriously enough? The main causers are the emerging countries in which industrialization and urbanization are growing at a rate that is much faster than the average. Whereas industrialized countries are already taking new and generally successful steps to drastically reduce CO2 emissions, these countries remain on the starting line in terms of sustainable industrial activity. Ralf-Michael Franke CEO Drive Technologies Siemens Industry As a global-player company, we regard it as our duty to support the industry in these countries in particular, and to provide concrete solutions for sustainability. The key to this is local presence. Only when we understand the markets and needs of the participating players, are we in a position to provide optimum benefit. Only when we are available locally, are we able to respond quickly and reliably to requirements. It is just as important, however, to maintain a clear overview a holistic approach. It is not the most innovative solution, but the most easily integrated one, that will be successful: Easily integrated in an existing plant, in an existing infrastructure, and ultimately in the respective living environment. It is clear from political efforts that electromobility is one of the most promising levers for reducing CO2 emissions. In China, for example, the number of private automobiles is predicted to rise from 55 million today to 140 million in The Chinese government hopes that almost 12 million of these will be electric cars. How can we as a globally acting industrial corporation contribute to this? Through software integration and IT solutions with the focus on energy efficiency, we can ensure an integrated production process for our customers that will allow them to achieve maximum productivity and a faster time-to-market. We also develop key technological components for the drive train of electrically driven cars and light commercial vehicles. Our portfolio includes electric motors, power electronics and intelligent onboard charging technology. Here we can rely on the experience gained through our partnerships with leading automobile manufacturers. Ralf-Michael Franke CEO Drive Technologies Siemens Industry 6
7 FOREWORD BY THE EXHIBITION ORGANIZER Welcome to E DPC 2012! As a conference and exhibition organizer dedicated to technology topics it is one of our most fascinating tasks to develop and support new platforms helping to promote communication between scientific ideas and industrial requirements. This year, we are delighted to co-organize the second edition of E DPC alongside the Institute for Factory Automation and Production Systems. The growing success of electric drives in every-day applications and products, the growth of renewable energy production, e-mobility, advancing automation and the demands of new legislations have brought many challenges to the industry and place high emphasis on the development of new and cost-effective production technologies. As a result, companies have to react fast to new settings and need to adapt to a changing reality. Still, many questions and problems remain unresolved. Petra Haaarburger President Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH At this point of the development it is important to create a mutual, international platform for the exchange of information, for collaborations and cooperations along the entire value chain. E DPC has committed to becoming that platform. At E DPC you get first-hand information about materials, technologies and applications for the production of electric drives. The close link between the conference and the exhibition guarantees a comprehensive overview about trends and innovations and offers the opportunity for discussions about today's developments and tomorrow's opportunities. With this in mind I wish you inspiring conference and exhibition days at E DPC 2012! Petra Haarburger Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH 7

9 FOREWORD BY THE CONFERENCE CHAIRMAN Dear Participants of the E DPC 2012! Innovative electric drive concepts help to solve the enormous challenges of our modern civilization: Electric generators provide disregarded almost 100 % of the growing demand for electric energy, electric traction drives enable clean, quiet and efficient mobility and electric motors borrow men's work in production, at construction sites and at home. Besides the importance of a differentiating design of the electric motors the perfect fulfillment of the entire supply chain, the ability to use and process new materials, the deep knowledge of all production processes and the capability to operate them at their limits as well as a holistic view on the integrated production system is exceedingly decisive for the competitiveness of the electric motor manufactures in a global market. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Franke Head of the Institute for Manufacturing Automation and Production Systems University of Erlangen Nuremberg So energy density and efficiency, weight and installation size, quality and reliability, environmental and social compatibility and last but not least costs and risks are tremendously predisposed by manufacturing. To correspond to these increasing requirements for engineers in product and process nd development the 2 International Electric Drives Production Conference (E DPC) 2012 offers in 66 profound presentations the latest know-how in all related areas, from innovative motor and control concepts, new materials and their preparation methods, detailed processes of power electronics assembly, wire winding, magnet handling, final test, and remanufacturing strategies. Furthermore, for the first time the increasing demand for innovative charging technologies for electric vehicles is communicated in a new platform: The Energy Transfer in Electric Vehicle Conference (E TEV 2012). For basic physical principles, core materials, and main production processes are similar, the E TEV is complementing the E DPC simultaneously at the same congress site. We are proud having been successful in gathering the who-is-who in the worldwide inductive power transfer community. With the accompanying dedicated exhibition, the instructive tutorials at the beginning, the world's most comprehensive congress program in electric drives production, the exciting technical tours to leading manufacturers and research institutes as well as the diverting social program, the E DPC 2012 will offer you a great opportunity to inspire your creativity and to meet interesting like-minded people. I am looking forward to meeting you at E DPC 2012 in Nuremberg! Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Franke E DPC Chairman 9
