2 An overview We are excited to launch Sheffield Hallam University's Engineering Masterclass Programme Sessions are suitable for students who have an interest in engineering from years The masterclass programme features a choice of 15 interactive sessions. Running from January to July each session is led by an academic expert and focuses on individual areas of engineering that can be studied at university level. Alongside these sessions students can take part in engineering outreach activities that will be led by current engineering students to give a flavour of university life. Sessions can be tailored to your students' needs, choosing from activities such as tours of the engineering and university facilities, student life talks and practical engineering sessions. To book a masterclass: Please contact Helen King with your preferred masterclass session, date (if applicable) and year group. Please note in order for us to tailor the academic content to your students our masterclasses are suited to just one year group per session, this will also allow us to gauge which outreach activities would be best to offer to your students.

3 Session Overview 26 th January hours Year Engineering Computer Science Electrical/Electronic Engineering The Internet of things: This hands on session will get students building internet enabled sensor networks capable of displaying dynamic data over the web and remotely controlling devices such as fans and lights. Students will learn electronics prototyping and gain experience in developing web-enabled embedded applications. 28 th January 2015 & 12 th May 2015 Session Length Suitable For: 1-2 hours Year Engineering Build and test fly a balsa wood glider: Learn about the key components of an aircraft and their purpose through this interactive session creating a balsa wood glider. Students will craft, assemble and test fly model gliders, making corrections to the centre of gravity to improve stability. 9 th February 2015 & 11 th May 2015 Session Length Suitable For: 2 hours Year Engineering Chemistry Material World: Learn how materials react to different situations and how forensic scientists detect counterfeit money in this interactive session. Students will learn the principles behind detecting counterfeit money whilst engaging in "Why does it behave like that?" material demonstrations.

4 Session Overview 10 th February 2015 & 24 th April 2015 Session Length Suitable For: 3 hours Year Engineering Physical Geography Geology Meteor Strike! This masterclass poses the question, 'What would happen if a meteor or comet impacted the earth?' Students will obtain and analyse data from a series of short experiments, and use it to design a machine or device that can prevent a meteor strike. 20 th March hours Year Engineering Computing Rocket design: Design a small 'amateur rocket' that could be built using standard parts. Students will learn about how to design rocket craft by using rocket design software which will then predict the performance of the rocket in flight. 24 th March 2015 & 7 th July 2015 Session Length Suitable For: 2 hours Year Engineering Engineering at university: Students will get an in depth introduction to engineering at university and be introduced to projects happening throughout the engineering department including meeting the Formula Student and Heavy Lift Challenge teams. Students will also get a chance to use the flight simulator and do some material testing. This will be followed by a tour of the facilities.

5 Session Overview 22 nd April hours Year Engineering Electrical/Electronic Engineering Process automation and control: Students will have an introduction to automation and control in the manufacturing industry and learn about the vital role it plays. Through interactive sessions students will look at how we can reduce lead times and improve work flow and efficiency to produce higher quality goods by using Programming Logic Controllers and Human Machine Interface. 8 th June hours Year Engineering Aerodynamics needn't be a drag: Students will learn the concepts of lift and drag from a conceptual basis rather than a mathematical one looking at what can happen with boundary layer and wake. Students will look at how engineers design items such as golf balls, sports cars and spaceships to allow for lift and drag through interactive demonstrations. 9 th June hours Year Engineering Heavy Lift capable aeroplane: The Heavy Lift Challenge, run with the BMFA (British Model Flying Assosiation), allows university students to design, build and fly load-carrying model aircraft piloted by radio control. In this hands on session students will determine the weight of the aeroplane parts given to them allowing them to predict the empty weight of the aeroplane. Students will choose from different designs and assemble their planes to later be flown with a weight attached to it.

6 Session Overview 11 th June hours Year Engineering Formula Student: Formula Student is a national competition allowing university students to design and build their own cars before racing them at Silverstone race track. This session introduces students to the Formula Student competition including learning about challenges the team faced and how they overcame these. Students will take part in looking at interactive sessions on mass-spring systems, bending beams and material testing. 9 th July 2015 Year Engineering Electrical/Electronic Engineering Solar and Greenpower car: This masterclass will allow you to ''get hands on with the technology behind the wheels" and students will look at: What is solar and how do we store sun energy? How is a battery made? What makes a motor spin? Students will also do practical sessions including creating "the fruit battery", "homo-pole motors", "pan and tilt:- the direction of the sun" do some "repulsive things with magnets" and "build a simple wind tunnel".
