19 3.5.2 Strings DC Overload Exceeding the recommended DC to AC ratio may cause damage to the unit not covered under the warranty. Size strings according to information in this section. Each zone has four inputs, each with a positive and negative side. Connect the same number of PV modules to each string in the same zone. Use the string sizing tool ( to determine lengths for the strings in each zone. For individual mode, strings must be balanced for optimum performance and AC output. When doing DC/AC ratio sizing, perform calculations at the zone level. Maximum DC/AC oversizing ratio is 1.5 STC conditions of the modules. Each zone maximum input power is 22.5 kw (XGI ) and 24.4 kw (XGI ). Note for any application that may experience higher than 1000 W per m 2 on a regular basis, a smaller DC/AC ratio is recommended. Also, the combined Isc rating of all strings multiplied by 1.25 must be less than 45A for Individual mode. If you are running the inverter in parallel mode by bridging the zones, then do the calculations based on the inverter power level. With maximum DC/AC ratio of 1.5 STC conditions, you can connect up to 90 kw (XGI ) and 97.5 kw (XGI ). Note for any application that may experience higher than 1000 W per m 2 on a regular basis, a smaller DC/AC ratio is recommended. Also, the Isc rating of all strings multiplied by 1.25 must be less than 180 A for parallel mode. Note all configurations must be below both requirements: DC/AC ratio and Isc. Zones do not have to match, but the strings within each zone must match. Figure 3.9 Matched String Sizes Within Each Zone DOCR B Page 19 of 35

20 3.6 Communications Connections Sample Communications Networks Figure 3.10 Mismatched String Sizes Within Each Zone Connection to the internet is required for the inverter. The modem or gateway must have a direct Ethernet connection to one inverter. The XGI uses TCP/IP Modbus for all Ethernet connections. The inverter can be connected to either SolrenView using the Revenue Grade Meter (RGM) or through a 3 rd party Data Acquisition System (DAS) that can connect using Ethernet. Figure 3.11 Sample Network Configurations with Weather Station and RGM (Left) and DAS (Right) DOCR B Page 20 of 35

The inverter by default acts as the master and has a software controlled terminating resistor. If the XGI is not the master, disable the resistor. Always make sure the gateway or modem has a direct Ethernet connection to one inverter DAS Connection Only use DAS that can connect using Ethernet. To connect a DAS, use an Ethernet connection. For sites with daisy-chained inverters the DAS and the modem or gateway must be at the ends of the chain, with all the inverters in the middle. For a star configuration of inverters using Ethernet switches, the DAS should attach to a switch. Always make sure the gateway or modem has a direct Ethernet connection to one inverter Weather Station Connection Only use weather stations that can connect using Ethernet. The weather station must connect to the modem or gateway. DOCR B Page 23 of 35

31 6. Operation Inverter Start-Up Manual Start-Up: In the User interface, on the inverter page, there is a button that will turn the inverter ON. Automatic Start-Up: The inverter will start up automatically when the output voltage and power from the PV array meet the required values and AC grid is normal Inverter Shutdown Manual Shutdown: In the User interface, on the inverter page, there is a button that will turn the inverter OFF. Automatic Shutdown: The inverter will shut down automatically when the output voltage and power of PV modules are lower than the required values or AC grid fails Operation Modes System Check This mode occurs when the user has opted to run a System Test, see Inverter Menu. Normal Operation This mode occurs when the inverter is exporting power to the AC grid. Standby This mode occurs when the output voltage and power of the PV modules do not meet the inverter specifications. The inverter will check automatically whether it meets the startup conditions in this mode until it turns back to normal mode. The inverter will switch from standby mode to fault mode if a malfunction occurs. Fault This mode occurs when the inverter is in a fault condition Grid-Tied Power Generation The XGI series inverter has an automatic grid-tied power generation process. It will check whether the AC grid meets the conditions for grid-tied power generation constantly and test whether the PV array has enough power. When all conditions are met, the inverter will enter grid-tied power generation mode. While in the grid-tied power generation mode, the inverter detects the grid at all times, and also keeps the photovoltaic array output in maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mode. In case of any abnormality, the inverter will enter the non-operational mode immediately. In low light conditions when the PV power is not sufficient to sustain the inverter operation, the inverter will enter standby mode. When the voltage and power of the PV array become stable and higher than the required value, the inverter will attempt to start grid-tied power generation again. DOCR B Page 31 of 35

32 7. Maintenance and Troubleshooting If an inverter is not running correctly, the Status Panel will show there is an issue. When the inverter is working normally, the first 3 LEDs are lit (Ready, Network and Communications, and Power) and the last 2 are unlit (Maintenance and Power Fault). The User Interface will also when an inverter is not running correctly. When the inverter is working correctly, the landing page will show a green checkmark next to the inverter.
