4 Safety Information Ultra Care SAFETY INFORMATION 1.1 Danger The following danger alert appears in this manual. DANGER Electric shock can cause death or serious injury. Charge the lift battery only as described in this manual. 1.3 Boxes like the one below emphasize important information. Use, assemble and disassemble the lift only with both legs locked in the extended position. Using the lift without extending and locking the legs could cause the lift to tip. 1.2 Warning The following warnings appear in this manual.! WARNING Untrained operators can cause injury or be injured. Permit only trained personnel to operate the lift. Improper use of the lift can cause injury. Use the lift only for the purpose described in this manual. Improper operation can cause injury. Operate the lift only as described in this manual. Stay with the lift at all times when it is carrying a load. Never leave the lift unattended when it is carrying a body or casket. 1.4 Bloodborne Disease Notice To reduce the risk of exposure to bloodborne diseases such as HIV-1 and hepatitis when using the lift, follow the disinfecting and cleaning instructions in this manual. 1.5 Safety Label Safety and instruction labels place important information from the Users Manual on the lift. Read and follow label instructions. Replace worn or damaged labels immediately. New labels are available from EMSAR (in the U.S.A. and Canada), page 21, or from your Ferno distributor. The following label is affixed to the lift: Helpers can be injured. Maintain control of the lift, operate the controls, and direct all helpers. Improper maintenance can cause injury. Maintain the lift only as described in this manual. Improper parts and service can cause injury. Use only Ferno parts and Ferno-approved service on the lift. 5 Ultra Care 4000 Skills & Training, About the Lift 2 - OPERATOR SKILLS AND TRAINING 2.1 Skills Operators using the lift need: a working knowledge of mortuary-service procedures. the ability to carry out mortuary-service procedures. a complete understanding of the procedures described in this manual. 2.2 Training Trainees need to: follow the protocols of your facility. read this manual. practice with the lift before using it in regular service. be tested on their understanding of the lift. record training information. A form is provided on page 23.! WARNING Untrained operators can cause injury or be injured. Permit only trained personnel to operate the lift. 3 - ABOUT THE LIFT 3.1 Description The Ultra Care 4000 (called the lift in this manual) is a mortuary service device for lifting and transporting a body or casket. The lift is for professional use only. A minimum of one trained operator is required to operate the lift. Additional help may be necessary when working with heavy or large loads. Features include: Battery-powered boom operation 24-Volt rechargeable lead-acid battery Green ON indicator (shows lift is connected to wall outlet) Orange CHARGE indicator (shows lift battery is being charged) Audible low-charge alarm Instant boom stop if an obstruction is encountered Handheld control Rear caster wheel locks Folding legs Four lifting straps Plastic extractor wand with hook Lift separates into three main elements! 7 Ultra Care 4000 Assembly & Disassembly 4 - LIFT ASSEMBLY AND DISASSEMBLY 4.1 Assembling the Lift Follow the instructions in this section to assemble the three main elements of the lift: the base, mast, and spreader-bar assembly (Figure 1). Base EXTENDING AND LOCKING THE LEGS 1. Remove the quick-release pin from the center of each leg (Figure 2). 2. Unfold one leg at a time and pivot it to its extended position. 3. Replace the quick-release pins to lock the legs in the extended position (Figure 2). Mast and Lift Boom Spreader-Bar Assembly Figure 1 - Lift Disassembled Note: If the legs are misaligned, the quick-release pins will be difficult to insert or remove. Move the leg slightly to insert or remove the pin. Use, assemble and disassemble the lift only with both legs locked in the extended position. 8 Assembly & Disassembly Ultra Care 4000 Do not use the lift unless both hex head bolts are in place and tightened properly. Mast ATTACHING THE MAST AND LIFT BOOM Before attaching the mast and lift boom, extend and lock the legs for stability. Use additional help as needed to steady the mast and boom as you secure it to the base. Hex Head Bolt (2) Base Sleeve 1. Position the mast with the actuator and lift boom facing the front of the lift (toward the legs). 2. Slide the bottom of the mast into the base sleeve. Figure 3 - Attaching the Mast to the Base 3. Insert the two hex head bolts (provided) into the holes in the base sleeve and mast and tighten them with a 9/16" wrench (Figure 3). 4. Remove the quick-release pin from the midpoint casting (Figure 4). 5. Raise the lift boom away from the mast. Lift Boom 6. Support the lift boom while positioning the end of the actuator in the midpoint casting (Figure 4). 7. Secure the actuator to the lift boom by inserting the quick-release pin through the casting and actuator. 8. Make sure the pin is locked in place. Use additional help as needed to hold the spreaderbar assembly in place while completing Step Position the spreader-bar assembly post in the end of the lift boom and secure with the quick-release pin (Figure 5). 9 Ultra Care Disassembling the Lift The lift can be disassembled into its three main elements for easier transport or compact storage. Use help as needed to disassemble the lift. REMOVING THE SPREADER-BAR ASSEMBLY 1. Remove any load attached to the spreader-bar assembly. To avoid entangled straps, remove and store the straps separately. 2. Support the weight of the spreader-bar assembly while removing the quick-release pin (Figure 6) from the lift boom. Use additional help if needed. 3. Slide the spreader-bar assembly out of the lift boom and set it aside. 4. Replace the quick-release pin in the lift boom. Use the handheld control to completely lower the lift boom, then remove the spreader-bar assembly as instructed above. 2. Support the lift boom while removing the quickrelease pin from the midpoint casting. 3. Fold the actuator against the mast and lower the lift boom (Figure 7). 4. Replace the quick-release pin. 5. Support the weight of the mast to make sure it will not fall when you loosen the hex head screws. 6. Use a 9/16" wrench to loosen and remove the two hex head screws from the base sleeve. 7. Lift the lift boom and mast out of the base and set them aside. Store the hex head screws in the holes in the base sleeve. Figure 7 - Folding the Lift Boom and Mast FOLDING THE LEGS Fold the legs only to store the lift. Keep the legs locked in the extended position at all other times. To fold the legs: 1. Remove the quick-release pin from each leg. 2. Fold one leg at a time to the center of the lift (Figure 8) and replace the quick-release pins. Note: If the legs are misaligned, the quick-release pins will be difficult to insert or remove. Move the leg slightly to insert or remove the pin. 10 Assembly & Disassembly 4.3 Storing the Lift Charge the lift battery when the lift is not in use. See Charging the Battery, page 18. To store the lift: 1. Remove the spreader-bar assembly. 2. Fold the legs. 3. If needed, fold the actuator and lift boom against the mast, following Steps 1-4 of Removing the Lift Boom and Mast, page 9. Ultra Care Hang the spreader-bar assembly on the rear of the lift (Figure 9A). Notice that a tab is attached near the center of the spreader-bar assembly. Insert this tab (Figure 9B) between the hangers. Also insert the post on one end of the spreader-bar assembly into the mount on the mast (Figure 9C). Note: If space does not allow the lift to be stored this way, disassemble the lift to store it (See Disassembling the Lift, page 9). 11 Ultra Care 4000 Using the Lift 5 - USING THE LIFT 5.1 Before Placing the Lift in Service 1. Personnel who will work with the lift need to read this manual. 2. Assemble the lift, following the instructions in Assembling the Lift, pages 7-8.! WARNING Improper operation can cause injury. Operate the lift only as described in this manual. 3. Confirm that the lift operates properly. Follow the instructions in Inspecting the Lift, page Before First Use Before using the lift for the first time, charge the battery. See Charging the Battery, page 18, and charge the battery for approximately 10 hours. After the initial charge, the battery recharges more quickly. If the low-charge alarm sounds, the battery will require charging for about 4 hours. Charge the battery for 10 hours before first use. After the initial charge, typical time to recharge the battery is 4 hours. 5.3 General Guidelines for Use Operating the lift requires one trained operator. Additional help may be needed when working with heavy loads or under certain circumstances. See Using Additional Help, page 16. Follow standard mortuary-service procedures when operating the lift. Stay with the lift at all times when it is carrying a load. Always use all four straps to secure the body or casket. Always use the pushbar handles to roll the lift. Charge the battery whenever the lift is not in use. Keeping the battery charged extends battery life. Use, assemble and disassemble the lift only with both legs extended and locked.! WARNING Stay with the lift at all times when it is carrying a load. Never leave the lift unattended when it is carrying a body or casket. Always use all four straps to secure a body or casket. 12 Using the Lift Ultra Care Wheel Locks Use the wheel locks on the rear wheel casters to help steady the lift when lifting or lowering a load, and when storing the lift. Release the wheel locks to roll the lift. Do not use the wheel locks as brakes. They are for use only to help steady the lift. To engage a wheel lock, press down on the pedal (Figure 10). To disengage the wheel lock, press the small release button in the center of the pedal (Figure 11). Figure 10 - Engaging a Wheel Lock 5.5 Attaching the Straps An example of a lifting strap is shown in Figure 12. Attach the plastic keyhole tangs to posts on opposite sides of the spreader bar. Use the slider bar to adjust the strap length. The D-ring is used with the plastic extractor wand to aid strap positioning. Do not attach straps to the lift by the D-rings. There are 11 posts on each side of the spreader-bar assembly to allow a variety of strapping configurations. Use accepted mortuary-service techniques to properly support a body or casket for lifting. Figure 11 - Disengaging a Wheel Lock Always verify that the load is properly balanced before moving the lift. Note: For convenience, arrange the straps so that the D-rings of all four straps are on the same side of the spreader-bar. D-Ring Keyhole Tangs Pull Loops (1 each end) Adjustable Slider Bar Always attach straps to the lift using the keyhole tangs, never with the D-rings. 13 Ultra Care 4000 ATTACHING A STRAP 1. Place the keyhole opening over a post on the spreader-bar assembly and pull the tang down to seat the post in the small end of the keyhole (Figure 13). 2. Repeat Step 1 to attach the other end of the strap to the opposite side of the spreader-bar. REMOVING A STRAP Posts on Spreader-Bar Using the Lift Keyhole Tang 1. Grasp the pull loop with one hand, hold the spreader bar steady with your other hand, and pull the loop up to slide the large end of the keyhole tang over the post (Figure 14). 2. Remove the keyhole tang from the post. Figure 13 - Attaching a Strap Pull 5.6 Using the Extractor Wand Use the supplied plastic extractor wand (Figure 15) to help position straps around and under the body or casket. To use the wand: Pull Loop 1. Detach the D-ring end of a strap from one side of the spreader-bar and place the D-ring next to the body or casket to be lifted. Pull 2. Slide the wand under the body or casket until the hook is near the D-ring and grasp the D-ring with the hook. 3. Pull the strap under the body or casket. 4. Attach the strap to the spreader-bar post by the keyhole tang. Never attach a strap to the lift by the D-ring. 14 Using the Lift 5.7 Handheld Control Use the handheld control (Figure 16) to raise and lower the lift boom. To use the control: 1. Hold the control with the directional arrows toward the top of the control (Figure 16). 2. To raise the boom, press and hold the up-arrow button until the boom reaches the desired height. 3. To lower the boom, press and hold the down-arrow button until the boom reaches the desired height. Hang the control on the pushbar when not in use (Figure 17). If the lift does not respond to the handheld control: Verify that the control is plugged in to the actuator; Up Button Ultra Care 4000 Down Button Make sure the battery is connected to the control box (See page 18); Charge the lift if needed; Contact EMSAR for parts or service (page 21). Figure 16 - Using the Handheld Control 5.8 Instant Boom Stop The lift boom is designed with a stop-movement safety feature that automatically stops the travel of the lift boom when an obstruction is encountered. 15 Ultra Care 4000 Using the Lift 5.9 Manually Lowering the Boom If the power fails while the lift is carrying a load, pull up the actuator release ring (Figure 18) to disengage the actuator and allow the boom to descend. The further the ring is pulled, the faster the shaft will descend. Let go of the ring to re-engage the actuator. Note: If the power fails while the lift is not loaded, charge the lift or contact EMSAR for parts and service (page 21). Actuator Release Ring 5.10 Rolling the Lift Roll the lift on smooth, unobstructed surfaces. Do not attempt to cross obstacles with the lift. Move the lift around obstacles, or clear obstacles from the path of the lift. Actuator Unit Figure 18 - Manually Lowering the Boom Use the pushbar handles to roll and steer the lift (Figure 19). Never push or pull the boom to move the lift. Pushing or pulling the boom can cause the lift to tip. For more maneuverability when not carrying a load, lower the boom and store the spreader bar on the rear of the lift (Figure 18). See Storing the Lift, page 10 for instructions on removing and storing the spreader bar. Avoid obstacles that could cause the lift to tip. Steer around obstacles or clear obstacles from the path of the lift. Do not use the boom to move the lift. This can cause the lift to tip. Use the pushbar handles to move the lift. 16 Using the Lift 5.11 Loading the Lift To pick up a body or casket: 1. Make sure the lift legs are locked in the extended position. 2. Roll the lift as close to the body or casket as possible. Position the lift so the majority of the weight will be centered under the spreader-bar assembly, mast and boom. 3. Engage the wheel locks. 4. Raise or lower the boom as needed to position the spreader-bar assembly over the body or casket. 5. Disconnect the D-ring end of the straps from the spreader-bar assembly. 6. Use proper mortuary procedures to position all four straps under the body or casket. Use the extractor wand as needed to aid strap placement. 7. Reattach the straps to the spreader-bar assembly. 8. Verify that all straps are securely attached to both sides of the spreader-bar assembly. 9. Raise the boom just enough to verify that the body or casket is secure and balanced in the straps. Lower the boom and reposition the straps if necessary Unloading the Lift To unload the lift: Ultra Care Roll the lift as close as possible to the destination. 2. Raise the boom until the body or casket is higher than the destination surface. 3. Carefully move the lift forward until the body or casket is over the destination surface and engage the wheel locks. 4. Lower the boom until the weight of the body or casket is fully supported by the destination surface. 5. Disconnect the D-ring end of the straps from the spreader-bar assembly. 6. Carefully remove the straps from beneath the body or casket, using the extractor wand as needed. Using proper mortuary procedures, you can also free the straps by rolling the body onto its side. 7. Reattach the straps to the spreader-bar assembly. 8. Disengage the wheel locks. 9. Raise the boom if necessary and move the lift away from the body or casket. 10. If you are finished using the lift, plug it in to a wall outlet to charge. 10. When satisfied that the load is securely attached and correctly balanced beneath the spreader-bar assembly, raise the lift to the desired height for transport. 11. Disengage the wheel locks and roll the lift to the destination (see Rolling the Lift, page 15). 16 Ferno-Washington, Inc May 2003
17 Ultra Care Using Additional Help Operating the lift requires one trained operator. He or she may need additional help when working with heavy loads, when attaching/removing lift components, and when maneuvering the lift through a narrow area.! WARNING Using the Lift Helpers can be injured. Maintain control of the lift, operate the controls, and direct all helpers. The operator should maintain control of the lift, operate the controls, and direct the helper or helpers. Ferno recommends using a helper when moving the loaded lift through a doorway or other narrow area. The assistant should help the operator guide the lift past obstructions and monitor the body or casket. Ferno-Washington, Inc May
18 Using the Lift 5.14 Charging the Battery Charge the battery: any time the lift is not in use. if the alarm sounds when the boom is raised or lowered. (The alarm indicates 20% or less of the charge remains). Totally discharging the battery hinders its capacity to recharge. Keep the battery charged at all times. Ultra Care 4000 DANGER Electric shock can cause death or serious injury. Charge the lift battery only as described in this manual. Battery If the battery charge is low (less than 20%), an alarm will sound when the boom is raised or lowered. Charge the battery immediately. Control Box CHARGING THE BATTERY 1. Plug the female end of the charging cord into the bottom of the control box and plug the male end into a wall outlet (Figure 20). Figure 20 - Charging the Lift 2. Engage the wheel locks. 3. Charge the lift completely before returning it to service. In most cases, completely charging a battery requires about four hours. Note: Additional charging time is required when charging the battery for the first time. See Before First Use, page 11. Release Handle 4. Disconnect the charging cord and disengage the wheel locks before using the lift. ATTACHING/REMOVING THE BATTERY The battery attaches to the control box. To remove the battery, squeeze the release handle on top of the battery and lift the battery off the control box (Figure 21). Control Box Figure 21 - Attaching/Removing the Battery To attach the battery, squeeze the release handle, set the base of the battery in the top of the control box, press the battery against the mast and let go of the release handle. 18 Ferno-Washington, Inc May 2003
19 Ultra Care 4000 Maintaining the Lift 6 - MAINTAINING THE LIFT 6.1 Maintenance Schedule The lift requires regular maintenance. Set up and follow a maintenance schedule. A form is provided on page 23. The following table represents minimum maintenance. Disinfecting (this page) Cleaning (this page) Inspecting (page 20) Each Use As Needed Each Month When using maintenance products, follow the manufacturers directions and read the manufacturers material safety data sheets. In the U.S.A., contact Ferno Customer Relations to order Ferno disinfectants and cleaners (page 22).! WARNING Improper maintenance can cause injury. Maintain the lift only as described in this manual. 6.2 Disinfecting the Lift Wipe all surfaces of the lift with disinfectant. Follow disinfectant manufacturer s directions. Ferno recommends inspecting the lift for obvious damage as you disinfect it. 6.3 Cleaning the Lift Remove the straps and follow the instructions in Disinfecting and Cleaning the Straps below. Clean all surfaces of the lift with a damp, soft cloth and a mild detergent. Use a stiff-bristled brush (but not a metal wire brush) if necessary. Rinse by wiping with a clean, damp cloth. Dry the lift with a towel. 6.4 Disinfecting and Cleaning the Straps 1. Remove the straps from the lift. 2. Spray metal slides with a disinfectant cleaner and wipe with a clean cloth, following disinfectant manufacturer s instructions. Do not immerse metal slides in liquid. 3. Add a disinfectant cleaner to warm water, following the disinfectant manufacturer s instructions. 4. Grasp the metal slides and immerse strap webbing in the disinfectant solution for the contact time directed by the disinfectant manufacturer. Do not immerse metal slides. 5. To rinse, grasp the metal slide and repeatedly dip the strap webbing in clear water. Do not immerse the metal slides. 6. Hang straps to air dry. Metal slides on straps can be damaged by immersion in liquids or by washing machine action. Disinfect and clean straps only as directed in this manual. Ferno-Washington, Inc May
20 Maintaining the Lift 6.5 Inspecting the Lift Have your service technician check the following: Are all components present? Does the boom move up and down smoothly? Is the lift free of excessive wear? Do all moving parts operate smoothly and properly? Do the wheel locks function properly? Are all four quick-release pins present in the legs and boom? Does the handheld control function properly? Are the straps in good condition with no cuts or frayed edges? Are all screws, nuts, and bolts present and securely in place? Does the lift roll smoothly? If inspection shows damage or excessive wear, remove the lift from service until repair is made (see Repair Parts and Service, page 21). 6.6 Lubricating the Lift Ultra Care 4000 The lift is lubricated when constructed and should never require lubrication. If the lift does not operate smoothly, inspect it. If repairs are needed, contact EMSAR (page 21) or your Ferno distributor (page 22) for repairs. 20 Ferno-Washington, Inc May 2003

22 Warranty and Customer Relations Ultra Care 4000 Limited Warranty Summary 8 - LIMITED WARRANTY Ferno-Washington, Inc. (Ferno), warrants the products we manufacture to be free from defects in material and workmanship for one year except as follows: (A) (B) (C) External finishes (gelcoat, decals, paint, etc.) are warranted for 90 days. Soft goods (webbing, vinyl, fabric, foam, etc.) are warranted for 90 days. Repairs and services are warranted for 90 days or until the end of the time period(s) above, whichever comes last. This limited warranty applies when you use and care for the product properly. If the product is not used and cared for properly, the warranty is void. The warranty period begins the day the product is shipped from Ferno or the day you receive it if you have proof of the delivery date. Shipping charges are not covered by the limited warranty. We are not liable for shipping damages or damages sustained through using the product. Limited Warranty Obligation If a product or part is proven to be defective, Ferno will repair or replace it.
