1 Introduction Mobility, independence and increased quality of life as a result as well as a high degree of safety are certainly also your requirements. The aks goliath heavy-duty hoist meets these requirements. The mature technology and the convenient configuration ensure safe use. This means more quality of life for the patient and making the work easier for the care personnel. Among other things, the aks goliath is distinguished by the following features: stable construction with plug-in mast removable rechargeable battery pack with separate wall charging station high quality double castors with diameter of 100 mm (2 of these with parking brakes) electrically operated spreading of the chassis Read and observe this operating manual before first use. The present operating manual gives you the necessary information for safe use. In the case of a change of owner, pass on this operating manual. 2 Intended purpose / application area The heavy-duty hoist is intended for short-time use and can be universally used for the complete field of nursing care. The heavy-duty hoist described here is used exclusively for the conveyance / transfer of a single person up to maximum 150 kg in a sling. The heavy-duty hoist is not suitable for transporting over long distances or into other building levels. It is also not designed for misuse as a means of transport for objects. The climatic conditions should be an ambient temperature from +5 C to +40 C, relative humidity from 20% to 90% and air pressure from 700 hpa to 1060 hpa. Page 3

3 General safety instructions The operating manual for the aks heavy-duty hoist and the accessories used must be read carefully and completely before start-up to prevent damage due to incorrect operation or hazards. It contains important information and instructions which are necessary for the proper operation of the aks heavy-duty hoist. The aks heavy-duty hoist must only be used by persons who have read and understood the operating manual and have been informed about risks and safety precautions. The user must have been instructed about handling the aks heavy duty hoist. The user must ensure the proper, faultless condition of the aks heavy-duty hoist before every use. It must particularly be ensured that the aks heavy-duty hoist has been mounted in accordance with the operating manual and that it does not show any damage. All parts of the aks heavy-duty hoist and accessories must be attached safely and correctly. Boom and sling must be selected in accordance with the task in relation to model, size and design. Ensure that the sling system has been correctly and securely applied to the patient so that the patient is not injured during lifting. Never leave the patient unsupervised in the sling system. Not even for a short time. This particularly applies if there are persons in the vicinity who have not been instructed in handling the aks heavy-duty hoist (e.g. other patients, children etc.). In certain cases, electrical equipment can be affected by switched on cordless and mobile telephones and WLAN, Bluetooth or other equipment emitting radio waves. These can impair the function of the heavy-duty hoist. Particular caution is also required for strong electrical interference sources. The activation time and the safe working load must not be exceeded, otherwise safe operation can no longer be guaranteed. Ensure that no moisture penetrates into the electrical system. In the event of damage or malfunction, the aks heavy-duty hoist must not continue to be operated. Ensure that the chassis is spread before you turn a person in position at the boom over the bed or bath tub, sitting or lying in the sling. Page 4

4 Receipt The aks heavy-duty hoist has already been inspected at the factory for freedom from defects and completeness. Nevertheless, check the product immediately after receipt for possible transport damage. Check whether all parts are present using the delivery note and thus that the delivery is complete. If this is not the case, contact your aks authorised dealer. 5 Scope of delivery The aks heavy-duty hoist is delivered in two cartons: Carton I (Figure 01): mast / cantilever arm, rechargeable battery, wall charging station, mains power cable Carton II (Figure 02): chassis, boom, operating manual After removing all individual parts, check the completeness of the package contents. The standard scope of delivery consists of: 1 x heavy-duty hoist 1 x boom, depending on the order 1 x manual control unit 1 x removable rechargeable battery 1 x wall charging station Figure 01 Figure 02 Page 5

7 Commissioning 1. Fetch the chassis from the carton and place it on level ground. 2. First lock the brakes of the rear castors and then remove the star handle bolt from the hole. For this, first remove the split pin (Figure 04). 3. Now you can insert the mast in the middle tube on the chassis (Figure 04). In doing so, ensure that the cantilever arm faces in the direction of travel. Lock the mast by inserting the star handle bolt in the hole and secure it afterwards with the split pin (Figure 05). Now tighten the clamping lever on the middle tube of the chassis. Figure 04 Figure Now remove the cable tie which holds the cantilever arm and mast together as transport lock. In order to fix the motor, remove the bolt from the retaining plate on the cantilever arm. Raise the cantilever arm and align the drill hole of the lift tube with that of the cantilever arm. Then insert the bolt again and lock using the locking plate (Figure 06). Figure 06 Page 7

5. Remove the retaining bolt with collar at the end of the cantilever arm for the mounting of the boom. Then insert the retaining bolt from below through the mounting hole of the boom. Then mount the retaining bolt with boom on the cantilever arm. Finally, pay attention to the correct application of the locking plate at the bolt (Figure 07). 6. Connect the spreader motor to the control unit. Check the plug connections on the control unit (Figure 08). It contains the following connection sockets: 1 = manual control unit 2 = lift motor 3 = spreader motor 4 = (not assigned) 7. The rechargeable battery must be charged for 18 hours before the first use of the hoist. Proceed according to section 8.6 / 8.7 Rechargeable battery. 8. Attach the charged battery to the control unit from above. Ensure that it engages and is seated firmly. 9. Unlock the EMERGENCY STOP button if it has been pressed by turning anticlockwise. 10. Finally, establish the safe condition of the hoist using the maintenance schedule. Figure 07 Figure 08 Page 8

8. Operation 8.1 Parking brake The parking brake is one of the important safety elements of a heavy-duty hoist. Your aks heavy-duty hoist is fitted with pressure brakes which act directly on the wheels. When the locking lever is pressed up to the stop, the brakes are locked and your aks heavy-duty hoist can no longer be moved (see Figure 10). Pull the lever up to release the brakes again (Figure 09). Attention! Always lock both castors. When only one castor is locked on a sloping floor, the unlocked wheel rolls downwards around the braked wheel. Depending on the slope of the floor, sideways tipping over can be expected. released locked Figure 09 Figure 10 Page 9

8.2 Manual control unit The drives are controlled using the manual control unit (Figure 11). Press the appropriate button to activate the required function. If a signal tone is heard when pressing any button, this indicates the battery capacity is too low. The rechargeable battery should be charged now. Height adjustment Spread adjustment Figure 11 Attention! If any operation of the control unit is performed despite the charge signal, the rechargeable battery can be destroyed by deep discharge. 8.3 Spreading You should increase the stability of the hoist before you lift any person with the hoist. This is achieved by spreading the chassis with an electric motor by operation of the manual control unit (figures 12 / 13). Figure 12 Figure 13 Page 10

8.4 EMERGENCY STOP button The control unit of the aks heavy-duty hoist is equipped with an EMERGENCY STOP button (Figure 14). The power circuit of the drives is interrupted immediately by pressing the red EMERGENCY STOP button on the control unit. This function enables you to avoid damage in emergencies. The button is unlocked again by turning it anticlockwise. EMERGENCY STOP button Electrical emergency lowering Figure Emergency lowering Mechanical emergency lowering: The aks goliath is equipped with mechanical emergency lowering for the case of any electrical defect on the motor or complete discharge of the rechargeable battery. This enables a retracting movement to be performed despite power supply failure. Requirement for this: the drive must be loaded in the compression direction. Pull the red release button in the direction of the piston rod eye for this. The lowering speed is dependent on the pulling intensity and on the static load on the drive. The drive can be prevented from retracting at any time by releasing the release button again. The emergency lowering operates with a load from 100 to 150 kg. The drive is operational when the emergency lowering has been ended. Electrical emergency lowering: Figure 15 Electrical emergency lowering is possible in the event of failure of the manual control unit. For this, use an object similar to a pin to press the Emergency button underneath the EMERGENCY STOP button (Figure 14). Page 11

8.6 Wall charging station Together with a second rechargeable battery, the wall charging station allows continuous use of the heavy-duty hoist. The wall charging station must be mounted upright on a wall (figures 16 / 17) before commissioning. The mounting rail is attached to a flat and firm wall for this. The type of fastening is dependent on the wall material. Use plugs and screws in accordance with the condition of the wall. The charger can now be pushed onto the lower part of the mounting rail and fastened using the supplied M5x10 mm screw. Now plug the device connector of the mains cable into the connection socket of the charger. Ensure that the device connector engages and cannot be pulled out. Attach the cable hook to the charger by pushing it onto the plug-in sockets from above. Hang the mains cable on the cable hook if you unplug the mains plug. The mains power cable must not lie on the floor. Mechanical loading of the mains power cable (e.g. driving over the mains power cable) must be avoided. Rechargeable battery Mounting rail Mains power cable with device connector (red) Cable hook Charger Figure 16 Figure 17 Page 12

8.7 Rechargeable battery The aks goliath is equipped with a removable rechargeable battery pack. Together with the wall charging station and a second rechargeable battery pack, flexibility, mainly in the stationary area, is guaranteed. Figure 18 General: Some basics should be observed for handling the rechargeable battery pack: It is recommended to charge the rechargeable battery for approx. 18 hours before first use to compensate for possible loss of capacity during storage. The rechargeable battery should be charged with an ambient temperature between 0 C and 40 C. The most effective charging temperature range is between 5 C and 35 C. The rechargeable battery must not be charged at temperatures below 0 C or above 40 C. The rechargeable battery system (control unit) is equipped with an audible signal transmitter. The audible charge signal is emitted when a button on the manual control unit is pressed. The rechargeable battery must be charged now. If any operation of the control unit is performed despite the charge signal, the rechargeable battery can be destroyed by deep discharge. The rechargeable batteries must be replaced after 4 years at the latest, depending on the usage intensity and possibly also even earlier. Frequent and rapid discharge reduces the service life of the rechargeable batteries. The rechargeable batteries should be connected to the mains power supply as often as possible to achieve optimum service life. The rechargeable batteries must be charged at the latest every three months otherwise they will be damaged due to self-discharging. If the rechargeable batteries are stored over a longer time, it is recommended to recharge them at the following time intervals: At a storage temperature of approx. 20 C, the rechargeable battery must be recharged every 5 months. Note: After long storage, all rechargeable batteries have smaller capacity than the rated capacity during the first cycle. In parallel operational readiness, the full capacity during charging is generally achieved within hours. Due to the reduction of the charging current during the charging process, the rechargeable battery is charged approx. 80% 4-5 hours after the charge signal sounds. A charging time of 10 hours is required to reach 100% charge. The rechargeable battery must be completely replaced if defective. Page 13

Charging process: Reach into the recessed grip at the top on the rechargeable battery pack to remove the rechargeable battery pack. Press the lever in the recessed grip and then lift the rechargeable battery pack out of the locking mechanism (Figure 19). Place the rechargeable battery pack on the wall charging station from above (Figure 17). In doing so, ensure that the rechargeable battery pack engages in the fixing rail. Connect the wall charging station to the mains power supply to start the charging process. The green LED ( ON ) signals the operational readiness and the yellow LED ( CHARGE ) indicates the charging process. Figure 19 9 Patient sling You need a patient sling to be able to lift a patient with the aks heavy-duty hoist. This should correspond to both the size, weight and condition of the patient as well as the intended action. The following describes attaching a standard patient sling to a lying patient: 1. Turn the patient so that he is facing away from you. 2. Roll up the patient sling in half in the longitudinal direction. 3. Place the patient sling with the rolled up side next to the patient. 4. Now turn the patient back on his back and pull the patient sling straight. 5. Now attach the patient sling loops in the sling eyelets on the boom. ATTENTION! Damaged or severely worn body support systems (patient slings) must not be used. Page 14

10 Accessories / combination Only original aks accessory parts should be used as accessories because these are tested by ourselves and thus guarantee faultless and safe functioning. Accessories: Boom Hoist sling Other accessories on request. Combination: You can also use other products from the company aks with the aks heavy-duty hoist. For example, these include our aks antidecubitus systems or our aks homecare beds range. ATTENTION! If accessories not shown are used or the hoist is used in combination with other products, the owner and the user are solely responsible to ensure reliable and safe operation. This combination must not be used if there is a possible recognised hazard. The responsible aks authorised dealer is pleased to help in the case of questions. Page 15

11 Care / cleaning The aks heavy-duty hoist is suitable for manual cleaning with a moist cloth. Cleaning and care materials suitable for plastic furniture can be used as cleaning materials. The following points must be noted here: Do not use any abrasive agents or cleaning materials containing ammonium chloride. Only use dermatologically tested materials. Do not use any basic and alkaline cleaning agents. Do not use any aggressive cleaning materials, e.g. solvents and hard brushes etc. Do not dip the electrical components in water. Only clean these with a slightly moist cloth. All hoist slings available from aks are machine-washable up to maximum 60 C. Do not iron! 12 Storage The storage location should preferably be cool, dry and dark. It should not exceed the normal room temperature. Direct sunlight must be avoided. The climatic conditions should be an ambient temperature from +15 C to +40 C, relative humidity from 25% to 85% and air pressure from 700 hpa to 1060 hpa. The aks heavy-duty hoist must be cleaned at the latest when it is used again and must be serviced as described under chapter 17 Maintenance. In the case of longer storage, note the point 8.7 Rechargeable battery. Page 16

13 Reuse The hoist must be cleaned at the latest when it is used again and must be serviced as described in chapter Disposal If the hoist has outlived its purpose, ask the local disposal company about the type of disposal. Each local authority has different regulations concerning this which can also change over the course of time. 15 Warranty The aks goliath is distinguished by its long service life and high reliability. Nevertheless, should technical problems arise, do not attempt to rectify the fault yourself. Contact your local authorised dealer. The dealer will provide assistance as quickly as possible and acquire all necessary spare parts if applicable. We guarantee our hoists for faultless condition in the context of our delivery and payment conditions. We make a factory warranty of 24 months from date of purchase. ATTENTION! Non-observance of the operating manual, improperly carried out maintenance work, and technical modifications and additions (attachments) without the permission of the aks company result in voidance of the warranty and general product liability. Page 17

16 Service life The service life for hoists in the domestic area is of course dependent on the type of use. Frequent adjustment, transport, installation and washing reduce the service life as do improper handling, irregular maintenance and exceeding the load cycles of the drives or the safe working load. 17 Maintenance General maintenance instructions The service life of the aks heavy-duty hoist is basically affected by the handling. Frequent adjustment and transport reduce the service life as do improper handling, incorrect maintenance and exceeding the load cycle of the drives or the payload. In order to ensure safe operation, a visual inspection and functional check with electrical inspection afterwards should be carried out at least annually. If the aks heavy-duty hoist is not maintained properly, safe use is no longer guaranteed. Wear, damage or also loosening of connecting elements can thus not be detected. In the case of damage and defects, inform your aks authorised dealer who will replace these parts. In the case of damage to load-bearing parts or the electrical system, the aks heavy-duty hoist must no longer be used. The electrical system consists of individual components such as adjustment drives, control unit, rechargeable battery and manual control unit. These closed units are maintenance-free and must not be opened. The modular design of the hoists allows replacement of individual components in the event of defects. Only original aks spare parts must be used, otherwise any warranty is void. You must not make any technical modifications and additions (attachments) without permission from aks. Only use the supplied individual parts for the aks heavy-duty hoist. Improper handling such as knocking, hitting, bumping release us from any warranty claim. Page 18

The Medical Products Operator Regulations are binding for the operator / user of medical products. The operator / user of electrically operated patient hoists is obliged according to the applicable accident prevention regulations BGV A3 to inspect these using a qualified electrician. According to VDE , this inspection must contain the following points: Visual inspection Insulation resistance measurement Leakage current measurement Functional check Overall assessment Service: If you have questions or need assistance, please contact your authorised dealer who is instructed in accordance with our guidelines and can provide advice, service and repairs. We have a network of dealers across Europe. This ensures that your requirements can be satisfied optimally. Page 19

18 Maintenance schedule The maintenance must be performed at least annually and before each reuse. Note: If the error rate in your company for the electrical measurements (DIN VDE :2001) is <2%, BGV A3 allows you as operator to increase the maintenance intervals to 2 years.
