ICT ISPC 2014, Mahidon University, th of March 2014 Smart Grid ICT Challenges Appendix: Norwegian Smart Grid Demoes and Labs 1 Professor Finn Arve Aagesen, Department of Telematics, (NTNU)
Norwegian Smart Grid Demoes and Labs Demo Smart Energy Hvaler Demo Steinkjer Demo Skarpnes Demo Lyse 2 RCC Alta Smart Grid Lab NTNU Source [
Norwegian Smart Grid Centre - Demoes and Labs RCC Alta, pilot North: Statnett Dyrøy Microgrid: TFK, Troms kraft, HiN PV, wind, CHP, storage, balancing issues, stability Demo Steinkjer: NTE Transmission: Congestion management, SVC, WAMS, PMU, demand response, TSO/DSO issues College Narvik Distribution: AMS, communication technologies, new tariffs and business models, customer response, information security 3 Smart grid Lab at NTNU/SINTEF Real-time simulators, Smart grid T&D simulations, EV charging and energy storage, Smart house, DG Demo Lyse Smart Energy Hvaler: FEAS NCE smart, Halden Energy company: Fiber to home, gateways, smart house services, welfare technologies Skarpnes Plus House: AE Distribution: AMS, holiday houses, PV, EV, DMS Distribution: Plus house, PV, heat well, grid interaction
Demo Smart Energy Hvaler Four «main islands» and 16 small ones load points with AMS cottages 50 kv radial supply 1 primary substation, 30 MW 18 kv HV network (110 km OHLs) 206 secondary substations (MV/LV)
Demo Smart Energy Hvaler Main project driver has been the requirement to change electricity meters on the island according to regulations from The Norwegian Metrology Service based on the EU MID-directive. Test Smart metering and associated 5 infrastructure for enhanced monitoring of MV and LV distribution networks for more efficient distribution system asset management and more rapid fault detection and restoration. Customer demand response as well as micro generation and charging of EVs and PHEVs are also issues to be addressed.
Demo Steinkjer (red area) 6 Network users No. kwh/year Domestic Cottage Farm Small business Larger business Electrical boilers Small hydro 1 Total
Demo Steinkjer The pilot involves 4500 network customers feed by a 132kV/22kV substation. The main driver for this pilot is the plans for early deployment of smart meters in the Mid of Norway (80% of customers shall have smart meters within 2014). Another main driver for the project is the NTE s proactive Smartgrid interest. The main objective in the short run of the project is to test domestic customers willingness to use new market products subjecting them to market price volatility. Market price variation over the day and week 7 is normally not large in Norway, but some extraordinary congestion situations in this part of Norway has led to short duration ten times increase in hourly spot prices. One of the key features of the pilot is to use and test IP-communication via fiber optics that have been installed to most domestic customers. Foreseen challenges that will be addressed are: interoperability, scaling of back office IT systems to cope with the large increase in data to be exchanges. Smart metering deployments logistics, customer education and data security are also issues to be addressed.
Demo Skarpnes (plus/zero houses) The demo is investigating the impact on the local grid of a residential area consisting of plus (zero) houses in southern Norway. 19 detached houses, 20 apartments and 8 semi-detached houses. All the buildings are equipped with PV panels, CSP and energy wells, and they are self supplied with energy over the timespan of a year. Focus: To monitor and analyse the variation in need for power of the single and the aggregation of buildings during different seasons, To understand better the energy use of the customers with regard to different energy intensive appliances, EVs, heating, lightening and so forth. 8

Demo Lyse (smart home automation and smart power) Fiber technology to all houses in the city of Stavanger The Demo project involves 40 houses equipped with: Smart House Controller and AMS Broad band connection Enabled: Smart control of 3 heating zones, and 7 lightening sources, including scheduling and remote control enabled by smart 11 devices as ipads, Smart Phones, PC etc. Physical push buttons and "scenario" buttons for day/night and home/away presets Smart House Controlled prepared for future welfare/health care services and security Testing: Usecases for different kinds of services, business models Smart Power /demand respons for the network operator
RCC Alta, pilot Northern-Norway: Statnett (TSO) This pilot is testing smart solutions for the transmission system operator (TSO): Smart Risk, Smart Operation, Smart System Concepts The new models and tools for planning and operation are connected to and demonstrated at the regional control centre in Alta (RCC Alta), however the geographical are involved is Finnmark, Troms and the northern part of Nordland county. The pilot has a focus on: Better monitoring, prognosis and control of energy use at the customer side. 12 Improved control of vulnerability in operation with smarter measurement and tools for decision making. Smart management of renewable energy resources when massive amounts of renewables are going to be integrated into the transmission system. The aim is to reduce costs of operation, increase balancing reserves, and predict and handle imbalances with a much higher degree of efficiency.
