PowerGen Europe 2014 CIMAC circle Impact & challenges for product development and daily customer business? 3 rd of June 2014; Köln Jürgen Winterholler Vice President Propulsion & Power Generation Head of System Development 1
Biography Winterholler Jürgen Professional: Electrical Engineer (Software, Energy) 6 years working for utility electrical engineer distribution network 2 5 years working for MAN Technology Software Development, Commissioning Power plants with Solar Gas turbines 1 10MW 7 years working for MDE Head of Electrical/Software Development Department CHP / Biogas products with gas engines KW 6 years working for MTU (Onsite Energy) Head of System Development Gas Gensets (CHP) KW Since 2013 working for MTU / Rolls Royce Power Systems Vice President for global System Development Gas /Dieselsystems, Power Plants 25 years Power Generation 2
AGENDA I. Why new grid codes? Change about renewables > Grid in balance (Demand vs. Generation) II. Activities (VDMA, ENTSO E, ) of our branch BDEW process, Utilities, ENTSO E requirements III. Technical / commercial requirements & challenges Frequency range, reactive power, FRT, Safety aspects, additional cost, BDEW process for certification (Einheitenzertifikat / Anlagenzertifikat), IV. Benefits of engine driven generator sets Synchronous alternator (reactive power, short circuit, ) 3 3
I. Why new grid codes? Generation more renewables like Wind & Solar > controllable generation required Demand behavior of consumer > difficult to control Secure of supply & Grid stability (quality) at any Time & Location 4 Additional has to be secured: Different Applications & operating modes (CHP, Biogas, ) Efficiency (Fuel, loses, ) Emissions (Environment aspects) 4
I. Control lever for balancing and help stability switchable / controllable generation products switchable / controllable Load Generation Consumer Load Grid Storage 5 Expansion Configuration Thermical Fuels Power to gas 5
II. Activities BDEW (German Grid Code) + ENTSO-E VDMA Working group since 2008 (Manufacture of engines, alternators, grid protections, Modelling company, utilities and certification companies) Spending a lot of effort and budget in modelling and testing of gensets Positive results > Changes of BDEW requirements for engine driven synchronous generator (Gas, Diesel) ENTSO E (European Network Transmission System Operator Electricity). Founded in December 2008 and fully operational since 1 July Represents 42 TSOs from 34 countries. ENTSO E NC RfG (Network Code Requirements for Generators) 6 6
III. Main technical challenges Static Grid Support Active power control (at frequency band 47,5 51,5 Hz) BDEW examples: 1. Manual process in 4 steps or with analog set point 2. Automatic mode as function of frequency Below of 50% nominal genset power is allowed to disconnect 7 7
III. Main technical challenges Static Grid Support 8 Reactive power control different operation modes BDEW examples: Mode 1: set point for power factor in 1 min. Mode 2: power factor as function of active power (P) in 10 sec. Mode 3: set point for reactive Power in 1 min. Mode 4: reactive power (Q) as function from voltage (U) in 10sec to 1min. 8
III. Main technical challenges Under excitation Reactive power control critical operation modes possible BDEW examples: Reactive power supply in range of power factor + 0,95 to 0,95 at grid connection point required. 9 Critical is under excitation (capacity area) 9
III. Main technical challenges Dynamic Grid Support FRT Fault Right Through > stay on grid during fault Example BDEW: Typ 1 Synchronous Generator direct connected to grid. Critical situation at failure (example short circuit): 1. Discharge of engine 2. Acceleration of engine 3. Asynchron to grid 4. Load angle (slip) U < 30% U n > Disconnection of Genset allowed! > advantaged by operating in under excitation mode! 10 10
III. Main technical changes on existing products + Engine controller with new Functions (Ignition, speed control, ) Oversized Alternator (under excitation) Auxiliary & Safety) (Pumps, ) Genset controller with new Functions (Power factor control, FRT, ) AVR with new functions (Alternator Voltage Regulator) 11 11
III. BDEW Complex certification process Example: Rolls Royce (MTU Onsite Energy Products) Einheitenzertifikate for Gas & Diesel gensets! 12 Complex certification process Anlagenzertifikat most important for customer 12
IV. Benefits of engine driven gensets I. Generation close to customer demand II. III. IV. Reducing of global warming gases & Saving of fuel resources CHP: Generation of electricity/heat/cold > efficiency > 90% GAS: different fuels (NG, Biogases, Waste gases, Synthetic gases, ) Diesel Gensets: Using of installed base of standby Gensets (grid support) Technology: Serial approved, low invest, fast installation V. Features of commercial power plant I. Synchronous genset => spinning inertia II. controllable (fast starting time & load profile) III. High short circuit capability + control of reactive power, voltage IV. positive contribution for stabilization of distribution network level 13 13
IV. Conclusion Common goal: Grid stability and safe supply has to be secured by growing renewables (like Wind, Solar) and decreasing of conventional power plants (like nuclear). Request to Legislator & Utilities: Set faire basic conditions in the wright sequence to give this technology time to provide market based technical solutions => Grow in balance with renewables, profitable without big subventions. Producer of products (Industrie): Engine driven Gensets (Gas & Diesel) give you a significant benefit for grid stability, electrical power supply and applications - now and in future! WE CAN & WE WILL SUPPORT YOU! 14 14
