Foreword Thank you for purchasing ARJO equipment. Your Chorus is one of a series of quality products designed especially for hospitals, nursing homes and other health care uses. We are dedicated to serving your needs and providing the best products available, together with training that will bring your staff the maximum benefit from every ARJO product. Please contact us if you have any questions about the operation or maintenance of your ARJO equipment. The touch panel label on the dual control panel displays several instruction symbols. The letter (i) shown on the open book icon indicates information, and is an instruction to always read the operating instructions before use (see Fig. 1). The expected operational life of your ARJO lift is 10 (ten) years from the date of manufacture, providing that the following conditions are adhered to: The date of manufacture is shown in the first 6 digits of the serial number on machines with 15 digit serial numbers. The date is shown as, for example, GB (GB = country of manufacture, 11 = 11th week of the year and 99 = year 1999). The remaining digits represent the machine s identification number. On machines with 12 digit serial numbers, the date is shown as GB (where GB = country of manufacture, 03 = year 2003 and 42 = 42nd week of that year). The remaining digits represent the machine s identification number. Conditions The unit is regularly maintained in accordance with recommended, published Operating and Product Care Instructions and the Preventive Maintenance Schedule. The unit is maintained to the minimum requirements published in the Preventive Maintenance Schedule. Maintenance must begin with the customer s first use of the unit, in accordance with ARJO requirements. The equipment is used for its intended purpose only and is operated within the published limitations. Only ARJO designated spare parts should be used. Consumables The expected operational life for fabric slings and fabric stretchers is approximately 2 years from the date of purchase. This life expectancy only applies if the slings and stretchers have been cleaned, maintained and inspected in accordance with the ARJO Sling Information documents, the Operating and Product Care Instructions and the Preventive Maintenance Schedule. The expected life for other consumable products, such as batteries, fuses, lamps, gel cushions, filters, seal kits, seat inserts, mattresses, safety belts, padded covers, straps and cords is dependent on the care and usage of the equipment concerned. Consumables must be maintained in accordance with the published Operating and Product Care Instructions and the Preventive Maintenance Schedule. All references to the patient in these instructions refer to the person being lifted, and references to the attendant refer to the person who operates the lift. References to left and right of the lift in these instructions are as viewed when you are standing at the rear of the Chorus, facing forward, i.e. as viewed from the dual control panel (see Fig. 1). The lifting operations in these instructions are described as if you are lifting a patient from a chair. The same operations can be performed effectively when lifting a patient from a sitting position on a bed, although a second attendant should support the patient if the patient lacks sitting balance. All operations in these instructions are described as if the attendant were using the control handset. Each operation described can be controlled using the control handset and/or the dual switch panel, located at the rear of the mast. The Chorus is manufactured to a very high standard. It is primarily designed to assist patients when standing and toileting, for use as a short distance patient transfer aid, and for standing and walking practice. When used as a standing aid, the Chorus is extremely useful for quick, easy transfers from one sitting position to another, and to elevate a patient for going to the toilet, repositioning, changing of incontinence pads or wound dressings, and standing practice. It is not intended for long periods of suspension or transportation. Some of the information contained in these instructions may become outdated, due to improvements made to the product in the future. If you have any questions regarding these instructions or your lift, please contact ARJO or its approved distributor. 4

Safety Instructions Symbols used adjacent to the text in these instructions: Warning: Means: Failure to understand and obey this warning may result in injury to you or to others. Caution: Means: Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage to one or all parts of the system or equipment. Note: Means: This information is important for the correct use of this system or equipment. This product has been designed and manufactured to provide you with trouble-free use. However, this product does contain components that, with regular use, are subject to wear. Warning: SOME OF THESE PARTS ARE CRITICAL TO ENSURE THE SAFETY IN OPERATING THE LIFT. THEY WILL NEED EXAMINING AND SERVICING ON A REGULAR BASIS AND MUST BE REPLACED AS NEEDED. Also, see the section entitled Care of Your Chorus. Warning: Use only ARJO slings that have been specifically designed for the Chorus. Warning: IMPORTANT: When using the transfer and walking sling for the transfer operation, the maximum lift capacity is 140 kg (308 lbs). Do not exceed this weight limit. Warning: Familiarize yourself with and understand the operation of the various controls and features of the Chorus, as described in the section in this manual entitled Product Description/Function, and carry out any action or inspection procedure before lifting a patient. Do not overload the Chorus beyond its approved lifting capacity. Care should be taken when manually lifting detachable components, such as the toilet seat, foot support, etc., to avoid personal injury. The Chorus may be used with caution on gentle slopes. Do not attempt to manually raise the complete lift. A clinical assessment should be carried out by a qualified nurse or therapist before lifting patients who are non-weight bearing. This applies to patients who have a limited shoulder movement or who cannot hold on with one or both hands. The Chorus may not be suitable for patients who have curvature of the spine or who are subject to muscle spasms. Patients should be assessed carefully before lifting. This product is intended to be operated entirely by an attendant. The patient should not perform any function relating to the control of this product. A second attendant may be required with certain patients. For the protection of patient and attendant, always ensure, when using this equipment, that no part of the patient s or attendant s body is allowed to come between parts of the lift that touch during operation. Before using your Chorus, thoroughly read and understand these Operating Instructions. Caution: Although it is manufactured to a high standard, the Chorus and its accessories should not be left for extended periods in humid or wet areas. Do not, under any circumstances, immerse the Chorus or its accessories (excluding slings) or spray them with water, such as in a shower. 5

Product Description/Function Unpack the battery pack supplied, and fully charge it as described in the section entitled Battery Charging. When the battery pack is charged, disconnect the electric power. Remove the pack from the charger and insert it fully into the Chorus battery position, located at the left hand side of the lift. Fit the protrusion at the bottom of the battery position into the recess in the bottom of the battery. Pivot the battery into position until the retaining catch engages. An electrical connection is made automatically. Ensure that the green reset button (located on the back of the lift cover) is pushed in (see inset to Fig. 1). Check that the System Failure Lower Override Knob is turned fully clockwise and is finger tight (see Fig. 1). Two types of sling can be used with the Chorus. Standing Sling a single loop, used to support patients at the toilet, and to aid in the standing process. The sling has a fleece cover for added comfort, which can easily be removed for cleaning. Transfer Sling a loop sling with back, buttock and leg support, used for the easy and comfortable transport of patients over short distances without the need for the detachable seat frame. Note: The slings have color-coded connection loops for size identification, as follows: Gray - Extra Extra Small (XXS) Brown - Extra Small (XS) Red - Small (S) Yellow - Medium (M) Green - Large (L) Blue - Extra Large (XL) Gray - Extra Extra Large (XXL) A circular label is attached to the central lifting tube for easy color-to-size reference (see Fig. 1). Ensure that both sling types are available for all lifts likely to be performed when using the ARJO Chorus. Controls and Features Control Handset:- A semi-remote control unit attached to the lift by an extension cable (see Fig. 2). The handset controls are for the lift/lower and chassis leg opening/closing functions. Direction arrows adjacent to the buttons indicate each function. If pressure is released from any button during use, powered movement will stop immediately. Raise Button Lower Button Chassis Legs Open Button Chassis Legs Close Button Fig. 2 Dual Control Panel:- Offers the same controls as the handset and is conveniently positioned on the top of the main body of the lift (see Fig. 3). Emergency Stop Button (red):- If, in an emergency, you have to immediately stop any powered movement (other than by releasing pressure on the handset or dual control panel buttons), push the emergency stop button located on the back of the cover below the dual control panel (see Fig. 1). This function can also be used to ensure that powered operation is not accidentally used when either transporting the lift or leaving it in storage or unattended. Once the Emergency Stop Button has been engaged, push the green reset button to initiate any powered movement. P1396a P1431b Fig. 3 7

Product Description/Function Reset Button (green):- (see Fig. 1) Adjacent to the emergency stop button. This is used to reset the power on status if the emergency stop button has been operated, or if the automatic overload fuse has blown. (This is indicated by the reset button protruding slightly). If the fuse has blown and, once reset, blows again, remove the lift from service and contact ARJO s Service Department or its appointed distributor. Automatic Cut-out:- (not an operator control but a function built into the lift electronics): If the lift is overloaded by trying to lift a patient heavier than permitted, an automatic cut-out function operates to prevent the lift from raising a weight in excess of one and a half times the maximum rated load. This will stop the lift motion automatically. If this occurs, release the pressure from the lift button on the handset or dual control. The electronics will reset to enable the patient to be lowered only, when either of the lower buttons is pushed. Remove the patient from the lift. Automatic Stop Function:- Great care should be taken not to lower the Patient Support Arms onto the patient or any other obstruction. If this should happen, the motor will continue to run but downward movement will be blocked by the obstruction. If this occurs, release pressure from the Lower button immediately and operate the Raise button until the lift is clear. Then remove the obstruction. System Failure Lower Override:- (see Fig. 4) This can be used in the event of main control failure. If the control handset or dual control panel fails to operate the lift with a patient still supported by the sling, you can still lower the unit by using the Lower Override Knob located on the right hand side of the main cover. A label is located above the switch for quick and easy recognition (see Fig. 1). To operate the Lower Override, turn the knob counterclockwise half a turn. To halt lowering, turn the knob clockwise until it is finger tight (do not over-tighten it). Only use this knob if there is a normal control failure. Do not use it for normal function lowering. Warning: Before operating the Lower Override to lower a patient, always ensure that a chair or suitable support is underneath ready to accept the patient. Fig. 4 The Lower Override will operate whether or not the emergency stop button has been pushed. The Automatic Stop Function of the jib will still operate when using the Lower Override Knob. When using the Chorus normally, always ensure that the System Failure Lower Override Knob is turned fully clockwise and is finger tight. Battery Discharge Indicator:- A small LED display which shows the charge condition of the lift battery (see Fig. 1 and also the section entitled Battery Charging ). Hour Meter:- (see Fig. 1) A small LCD display which shows the total duration of powered operation (in hours). This is primarily intended as an aid to service engineers and to help the attendant calculate maintenance intervals. Chassis Castor Brakes:- The chassis rear castors have brakes which can be foot operated when leaving a patient unattended or to keep the Chorus in position (see Fig. 5). P1479 P1341a, b Fig. 5 8

Product Description/Function Patient Support Arms:- Integral part of the lifting mechanism of the lift (see Fig. 1). The support arms carry the sling attachment cords and house the cord locking cleats. The arms are used as handgrips by the patient during the lifting procedure. Foot Support:- For positioning the patient s feet when lifting and transporting. It can be removed if the Chorus is used to lift a patient to his/her feet in order to use a walking aid, such as a Zimmer (see Fig. 1 and 6). To remove the foot support, raise the proactive knee support to its highest position. (Note: where installed, unclip one side of the Velcro tie strap from around the foot support cover and slide the cover up the knee support column). Position yourself between the chassis legs and grip both sides of the foot support. Lift up the front half of the foot support until it just comes into contact with the foot support bracket. While it is in this position, pivot the rear of the foot support upward until the foot support is horizontal. Pull the foot support toward you until it is clear of the support bracket. Store carefully for future use. Slide the foot support cover back down into position and secure it with the Velcro strap. Readjust the Proactive kneepad to the desired position. To reposition the foot support, reverse the above procedure. Note: Ensure that the two hooks on the foot support are placed over the top two locating buttons. P1450 the patient s legs move side to side during the lift. To adjust the Proactive Pad, hold it with one hand and loosen the clamping screw knob with the other hand. When the correct height has been reached, retighten the knob. Proactive Pad Clamping Screw Knob Proactive Pad Lower Leg Straps:- (see Fig. 8): an optional accessory used to ensure that the lower parts of the patient s legs stay close to the Proactive Pad for the correct lifting procedure. Guides on the back of the Proactive Pad hold the strap in position. The strap passes through these guides, then around the patient s lower calves. Overlap the ends and press together with Velcro fasteners. Ensure that the strap is firm but comfortable for the patient. P1334c/2 Fig. 7 mp1333a/2 Fig. 8 Fig. 6 Proactive Pad. This is a responsive lower leg support which enables the patient to be lifted comfortably and effortlessly (see Fig. 1 and 7). It can be adjusted vertically for different lower leg lengths and is spring-loaded to stay in contact when Adjustable Width Chassis Legs:- The chassis legs can be opened to any variable width by operating the appropriate button on either the control handset or dual control panel on the lift (see Fig. 9). By releasing the button, movement will stop and the chassis legs will remain securely in position. Note: Transportation should be performed with the chassis legs closed, as it will be easier when maneuvering through doorways, etc. 9

Product Description/Function P1332d The retractable toilet pan, accessible from the rear of the seat may be used or removed to position the patient over a toilet (see Fig. 11). Apply the chassis brakes if leaving the patient unattended. Fig. 9 Warning: The patient and/or operator should never place their feet or any other part of their body in the area between the foot support and chassis legs when the chassis legs are closing. Toilet Seat (accessory) The toilet seat and frame is recommended as an alternative way to take patients to the toilet at the chair or bedside or for patients who cannot be transported in the transfer sling. Insert the toilet frame into the holes in the chassis legs once the patient has been lifted to a standing or nearstanding position in the manner previously described (see Fig. 10). P1335d/2 P1335e Fig. 11 Fig. 10 Remove any clothing as necessary and lower the patient onto the toilet seat. Support the patient using the sling. 10

Using Your Chorus Using the Chorus for Toileting and Transportation Before approaching the patient, the attendant should always tell the patient what they are going to do, and have the correct size and type of sling ready (See the description of sling types in the section entitled Introduction.) Although the sling can be attached to a patient with the Chorus close by, it may be easier to do so before moving the Chorus into position. Once the sling has been attached (see the following sections), the Chorus may be put into position in from of the patient as follows: Adjust the height of the Patient Support Arms sufficiently to avoid approaching the patient at eye level. Make allowances for the patient s arms and any obstructions, such as chair arms. Approach the patient from the front with the lift. Stop before the foot support and Proactive Pad reach the patient (see Fig. 12). P1342d/2 Adjust the Proactive Pad height, if necessary. An approximate guide is to align the top of the Proactive Pad to just below the patient s patella (see Fig. 14). P1342e/2 Fig. 13 P1347c/2 Fig. 12 Note: Press the appropriate button on the control handset or dual control on the lift if the chassis legs need to be opened to go around the chair. Note: If the handset button or dual control button is released during any function, powered motion will stop immediately. Fig. 14 Carefully move the lift in close to make full lower leg contact with the Proactive Pad (see Fig. 14). Then apply the chassis brakes. For the use of each individual type of sling, see the following sections: When the patient is ready, assist or allow the patient to place his/her feet on the foot support. Push the Chorus toward the patient to help achieve this (see Fig. 13). 11

Using Your Chorus Standing Sling P1342c Warning: Determine whether the patient requires the lower leg straps. Apply these if necessary. Encourage the patient to lean forward slightly to place the sling around his/her lower back (see Fig. 15). Position the sling around the patient s back so that the bottom of the sling lies horizontally about two inches above the patient s waistline, with the patient s arms outside the sling. Separate the support strap and bring it loosely around the body. Ensure that it is not twisted or trapped behind the patient s back. P1342b Fig. 16 If the Chorus is not already next to the patient, bring it to the patient as described previously. Take each adjustment cord in turn and release it until it can be attached to the loop on each end of the sling. The right hand cord attaches to the left hand loop and the left hand cord attaches to the right hand loop (see Fig. 17). P1343a, b, c, d Fig. 15 To fasten the support strap securely, overlap the ends and press the Velcro together. The strap should be tight, but comfortable for the patient (see Fig. 16). Note: As stated previously, the standing sling may be put in place before the Chorus is brought into position (see Fig. 13). Warning: The support strap must be used with all slings. Note: The support strap will help support the patient in the sling during the lifting procedure. The strap also holds the sling in the correct position around the patient. Fig

Using Your Chorus Note: Pull the cords upwards to release them from the cord locking cleats. When both cords are attached correctly, adjust them equally so that the slack is taken up in each cord and the back section of the sling supports the patient comfortably and securely. Lock the adjustment cords down into the cord retaining cleats (see Fig. 18). Warning: Ensure that the cord end knobs are away from the Proactive Pad when the patient s legs are near or in contact with the pad. P1334a/2 If possible, the patient should then hold on to the Patient Support Arms with one or both hands. The patient is then ready to be lifted. Note: If the handset button or dual control button is released during lifting or lowering, powered motion will stop immediately. If the patient is able to contribute to the standing procedure, this may be beneficial for patient confidence and muscular exercise. Encourage patients to give as much assistance as possible to raise from the chair and/or steady themselves. Press the raise button on the handset or dual control panel to raise the patient to a suitable and comfortable height for the particular function, such as transportation, going to the toilet, etc. (See Fig. 20). P1344c/2, P1344d/2 Fig. 18 Note: The patient should be supported by the sling, but not pulled forward too much (see Fig. 19). Fig. 20 P1344b/2 Warning: The patient s feet should always remain in full contact with the foot support (or the floor, if lifting without the foot support attached). While lifting, check to ensure that the patient s feet do not lift from the support or floor. If this should happen, lower the patient immediately until full foot contact with the support or floor is reached. Fig

Using Your Chorus IMPORTANT: Always check that the sling adjustment cords are locked into position before and during the lifting cycle, and in tension as the patient s weight is gradually taken up. Note: If patients can stand well enough to lock their knees in the normal way when fully raised, their knees will come away from the Proactive Pad and they will be able to lean back into the sling. Patients who can only hold on with one hand, such as those who have suffered a stroke, may still be lifted with the Chorus. However. their disabled arm should be held down in front of the body during the lift by the attendant (or a second attendant), while their functioning hand holds the Patient Support Arm in the normal way. Warning: Only use this or other methods after a satisfactory professional assessment has been carried out on the individual patient. If required, insert the detachable seat frame into the receptor holes in the chassis legs. Then lower the patient to a comfortable seated position for taking to the toilet or longer distance transportation (see Fig. 21). Note: Move the Chorus with the chassis legs closed. This will make it easier to move through doorways, etc. While the patient is raised, make any necessary adjustments to clothing, incontinence pads, etc., before lowering again. Use the control handset or dual control panel to carefully lower the patient. Warning: Apply the chassis brakes if leaving the patient at the toilet or unattended. When the patient is seated in the new position, to remove the sling, Pull each cord up from its locking cleat and loosen the cords sufficiently to release the Loop Lock fitting. Then remove the cords from the sling. Pull apart the Velcro fastening to remove the support strap. Warning: Do not attempt to release the support strap while the patient is supported by the sling. Remove the sling from the patient. Remove the lower leg straps, if they have been used. P1345a/2 Warning: If the patient lacks sitting balance and has been returned to sit on the side of the bed, a second attendant may be needed to support the patient while the sling is being removed. Fig. 21 Note: Adjust the chassis legs to the closed position to install the seat frame. Release the brakes and transfer the patient to the new position, such as the toilet, wheelchair, chair, or bed. Transfer Sling Using the Sling for Transfer:- The attendant should always tell the patient what they are going to do, and have the correct type of sling ready. (See the description of sling types in the section entitled Introduction.) Encourage the patient to lean forward slightly so that the selected sling can be placed around their lower back (see Fig. 22). Position the sling around the patient s back so that the bottom edge of the sling is level with the base of the spine. Ensure that the patient s arms are outside the sling and that the support strap is separated. 14

Using Your Chorus P1345b Fig. 22 P1345d Take each leg section of the sling in turn and slide it under the appropriate leg (see Fig. 23). P1345c Fig. 24 The strap should be tight but comfortable for the patient (see Fig. 25). P1345e Fig. 23 Bring the support strap around the body and fasten it securely by overlapping the ends and pressing the Velcro together (see Fig. 24). Fig. 25 Note: The support strap will help support the patient in the sling during the lifting procedure. 15

Using Your Chorus Adjust the height of the Patient Support Arms to avoid approaching the patient at eye level. Make allowances for any obstructions, such as chair arms, etc. Approach the patient from the front with the lift. Stop before the foot support and Proactive Pad reach the patient (see Fig. 26). Adjust the Proactive Pad height, if necessary, to align the top of the Proactive Pad just above the patient s patella, or adjust the pad to its highest position (see Fig. 28). P1346a/2 P1346c/2 Fig. 26 Note: Press the appropriate button on the control handset or dual control on the lift if the chassis legs need to be opened to go around the chair. Fig. 28 Identify the attachment loop on each side of the sling and attach the right hand adjustment cord to the left loop. Repeat for the loop on the other side (see Fig. 29). See also Fig. 17 for attachment of the cords. P1347d/2 Note: If the handset button or dual control button is released during any function, powered motion will stop immediately. Assist or allow the patient to place his/her feet on the foot support. Push the Chorus toward the patient to help achieve this (see Fig. 27). P1346b/2 Fig. 29 When both cords are attached correctly, adjust them equally so that the slack is taken up in each cord. Warning: Lock the adjustment cords down into the cord retaining cleats (see also Fig. 18). Fig. 27 Warning: Ensure that the cord end knobs are away from the Proactive Pad when the patient s legs are near or in contact with the pad. 16

Using Your Chorus Take each leg section strap (equipped with a plastic attachment clip). Attach each clip to the lug located on either side of the main lifting arm (see Fig. 30). P1346d/2 Warning: IMPORTANT: Always check that the sling adjustment cords and support strap attachment clips are locked fully into position before and during the lifting cycle, and in tension as the patient s weight is gradually taken up. Be careful not to raise the patient too high, as this will negate the comfort of the transfer sling. Release the chassis brakes and close the chassis legs. Then transport the patient to the desired position (see Fig. 32). Fig. 30 P1347b/2 Adjust the length of each strap as necessary so that it is tight and supportive but not restrictive. Warning: Ensure that each clip is correctly and securely attached to the lug. Allow the patient to hold the Patient Support Arms. Press the lift button on the handset or dual control panel to raise the patient just clear of the chair. Then stop the lift (see Fig. 31). P1347a/2 Fig. 32 Move the Chorus with the chassis legs closed. This will make it easier to move through doorways, etc. If the patient is to be transported over longer distances or if the patient would find it more comfortable, use the toilet seat and frame (if available). Warning: Apply the chassis brakes if leaving the patient unattended. Warning: Do not attempt to release the straps or cords while the patient is supported by the sling. Fig. 31 If the patient experiences any discomfort, return the patient to the sitting position and readjust. ARJO Scale (if included) If the Chorus has been supplied with an integrated Scale unit (see Fig. 33), it is possible to weigh a patient during the lifting procedure. The scale has been designed to weigh hospital or care facility patients under the supervision of trained nursing staff. Avoid all other uses. 17

Lift the patient until clear of any obstructions, such as chair, bed, toilet seat (if included). Ensure that the patient s feet are placed securely on the foot support. P1431c Fig. 35 Do not press the button again: the number displayed will be the patient s weight. IMPORTANT: Do not touch or lean on the patient or lift during the weighing operation. Note: The scale, once switched on, will operate for 6 minutes. After this time, the scale will automatically switch off. If this happens, press the button again. Caution: Do not overload the scale. If the scale unit displays MAX, remove the patient immediately. Method B : Weighing with the Patient Already Suspended in the Sling. Ensure that the patient is suspended clear of any obstructions, such as a chair, bed, or toilet seat (if installed). Press the Scale Operating Button (see Fig. 35). Note: If the patient is agitated, the attendant should wait until the patient is calm before attempting to weigh. A display test will be performed. All display segments are shown for approximately one second. The display will show WAIT and, after several seconds, will display the mode that the scale is in. Ignore the weight displayed and press the operating button again. The scale will display NET 0.0 (see Fig. 35). Lower the patient to a suitable position and remove the sling. Ensure that the patient is sitting comfortably and move the lift away from the patient. Hang the sling over the Patient Support Arms. The weight displayed, although it will have a minus (-) sign in front of it, is the weight of the patient. Remove the sling. IMPORTANT: Do not touch or lean on the patient or lift during the weighing procedure. 20

Using Your Chorus Note: The scale, once switched on, will operate for 6 minutes. After this time, the scale will automatically switch off. If this happens, press the button again. Caution: Do not overload the scale. If the scale unit displays MAX, remove the patient immediately. Note: It is possible to Zero Out (tare) the scale during operation. Apart from cleaning, no other special maintenance should be required for the scale. Calibration ARJO recommends that you check your scale every 12 months for accuracy. Have the calibration adjusted, if necessary. This must be carried out by an ARJO service engineer. For more information, contact ARJO Ltd. or its approved distributor. 21

Lift Battery Charging Warning: Charging the battery must only be performed away from the patient environment. The charger is for indoor use only. Only use the charger unit in a dry environment. Do not use it in a bathroom. Do not expose the charger unit or battery pack to rain or spray and do not immerse in water. Do not expose the charger unit to dust. To avoid overheating, do not cover the charger while in use. Do not allow smoking or exposed flames in the vicinity of the battery. The battery charger is for use only with batteries that are supplied by ARJO for use with the Chorus. Use the battery charger for sealed lead acid batteries only. Under no circumstances should the charger be used to recharge nonrechargeable batteries. Do not attempt to open or tamper with the charger unit in any way. For any repair, the charger must be sent to the manufacturer. The electric power socket must be easily accessible. If a fault condition occurs, switch off the power and remove the connection plug from the socket. When charging batteries, only use ARJO components that have been specifically designed for this purpose. Only use the ARJO battery that is supplied for use with the Chorus. Only use the ARJO charger unit supplied with the Chorus. Do NOT charge batteries in a sealed container. Do NOT place batteries near fire or dispose of them in a fire. Do NOT short-circuit a battery. Do NOT store batteries at temperatures in excess of 60 C (140 F). Warning: Do NOT crush, puncture, open, dismantle or otherwise mechanically interfere with batteries. If the battery casing is cracked, and electrolyte comes into contact with skin or clothing, wash immediately with water. If the battery casing is cracked, and electrolyte comes into contact with skin or clothing, wash immediately with water. If the electrolyte comes in contact with the eyes, wash them immediately with copious amounts of water and seek medical attention. When disposing of batteries, contact the appropriate local authority for advice. The abbreviation Pb shown adjacent to the recycling and trash bin symbols on the battery pack label is the element symbol for lead. It indicates that the battery contains lead and should therefore not be disposed of in the normal manner but must be recycled. Note: Remove the battery from the lift if the lift will not be used for a extended period of time. For more details on lift battery care, refer to the ARJO Battery Care literature, Part No. KDX01660.US. The Chorus uses a Battery Discharge Indicator located on the right hand side of the cover (see Fig. 1). The display shows ten levels of battery condition, ranging from fully charged on the right end of the scale to very low on the left end (green through yellow to red). Note: The Battery Discharge Indicator has an energy saving function, which automatically switches off the display if a function button has not been pressed for 30 seconds. As soon as a button is pushed to engage any function, the display will reactivate. It is recommended that the battery be removed from the lift and recharged when the display reaches the yellow range. Lifting is possible until the display shows the red flashing light. At this point, the battery must be recharged as soon as possible. 22

Lift Battery Charging To prolong the life of the battery pack, recharge it before it reaches a low state of battery charge, and certainly before it is totally discharged. Your lift is equipped with an audible warning device which will sound when the battery discharge indicator reaches the red light range. To ensure that the Chorus is always ready for use, keep a fully charged battery pack available. Have additional battery packs available and keep one on charge while the other is in use. It may be considered good protocol to have a fully charged battery ready for the start of every work shift. Note: When a fully charged battery is inserted into the lift, the display will return to the green fully charged position, regardless of the level the indicator had reached previously. However, if a partially charged battery is inserted, the previous indicator level will stay the same, even though the recently inserted battery may be in a better charged than indicated. For a true indication of battery condition, insert a fully charged battery into the lift. This will reset the indicator. Place the battery pack on the charger as follows: Caution: Ensure that electric power to the charger unit is switched off before connecting the battery. Note: The cable that connects the electric power to the charger is supplied as a detachable item. If using the battery charger for the first time, or if the cable has been unplugged from the charger, connect the cable fully into the charger before connecting to the electrical outlet. positioned securely. Insert the battery connector from the charger into the corresponding connector in the back of the battery and switch on the electric power. An orange light will be displayed on the charger unit when the battery is totally discharged. This will change to a yellow light as the battery approaches full charge capacity and finally to a green light when the battery is fully charged. A discharged battery should be left for approximately 8 hours to totally recharge (also, see the document entitled ARJO Battery Care ). Warning: Hold the pack firmly to ensure that it does not drop and become damaged or cause personal injury. Note: The battery pack may be left connected to the charger unit when it is fully charged, without being damaged by overcharging. This will also ensure that the battery is kept fully charged. Caution: Always disconnect the electric power before disconnecting the battery from the charger unit. When the battery pack is fully charged, disconnect the electric power, remove the pack from the charger, and insert it back into the Chorus battery compartment. Ensure that the green reset button (located on the rear of the mast) is pushed in (see Fig. 1). The Chorus is now ready for use. Danger: Always ensure that the cable connection plugs that fit into the charger and into the battery are fully inserted before you switch on the electric power. When the LED on the Battery Discharge Indicator displays amber, complete the lift cycle. Then take the lift to a convenient location and remove the battery pack. To do this, grip the battery and press the release catch located above it. Pivot the battery away and lift it clear. Insert the battery into the battery charger unit and ensure that the battery is 23

Care of Your Chorus General Lift Care Frequency of the following actions is dependent on how often the equipment is used. Unless otherwise stated, start with weekly inspections, then determine frequency based on experience. Warning: The slings should be checked and, if necessary, washed according to the instructions on the sling. Also, refer to the sling instruction sheet MAX01520.INT. The Polyester fleece sling cover may be removed from the sling cushion assembly for laundering. To remove the cover, undo the tie cords at each end of the sling. Open up the Velcro seam and remove. Secure the tie cords with a knot before laundering. Warning: Slings should not be classified as linen, but as an accessory to a patient transfer lift and therefore, classified as a medical device. Slings should be cleaned and disinfected only in strict accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. ARJO strongly recommends that the support strap be removed from the sling before washing it. This is to prevent Velcro hook damage to the fabric of the sling. The support strap should be washed separately, with the Velcro patches in the closed position. To close them, fold the strap over on itself and press the Velcro mating halves together. Always ensure that the support strap is reconnected to the sling before use. Mechanical pressure, such as rolling or pressing, should be avoided during the washing and drying procedure as this can damage parts that are vital to the safe and comfortable operation of the sling. It is recommended that ARJO Patient lifts, equipment and slings are regularly cleaned. If the slings, lift and equipment need cleaning, or you suspect them of being contaminated, follow the cleaning and/or disinfection procedures recommended below before reusing the equipment. This is especially important when using the same equipment for another patient, to minimize the risk of cross-infection. To clean the lift and accessories, wipe them down with a damp cloth using warm water to which an appropriate ARJO disinfectant cleaner has been added. Note: ARJO CLEAN disinfectant cleaner is available from ARJO Ltd. or its approved distributors. Caution: Do not soak areas of the product as this could damage electrical components and cause internal corrosion. If a hot air dryer is used to dry the lift, the temperature must not exceed 80 C (176 F). Do not use petroleum-based solvents, as these may damage plastic parts. Warning: To disinfect contaminated lifts, equipment and accessories, use the preferred method of wiping the product completely with hard surface disinfectant wipes which are supplied impregnated with a 70% v/v solution of Isopropyl Alcohol. Note: A rubbing action will be necessary when using the wipes, to effectively disinfect the surfaces. Warning: IMPORTANT: Cleaning and disinfection products must be used in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. Wear the appropriate eye, hand and clothing protection at all times when handling disinfectants. Note: 70% v/v Isopropyl Alcohol wipes have been proven to be effective against MRSA and several other microorganisms under light soiling conditions. Ensure that the battery pack is always fully charged. Check that the lift can be moved normally and ensure that the castors move freely, as hair and fluff anc clog them. Also, check that the castor tread is not damaged. 24

Care of Your Chorus Warning: Ensure that the castors are firmly secured to the chassis. Carefully inspect all plastic parts, in particular those that come in personal contact with the patient s body. Ensure that no cracks or sharp edges have developed which could injure the patient s skin or become unhygienic. It is essential that the sling attachment cords, slings, straps and attachment clips are carefully inspected before each and every use. If the slings, cords or straps are frayed or the clips damaged, the sling or attachment cord must not be used and should be replaced immediately. Check that all external fittings are secure and that all screws and nuts are tight. Ensure that all instruction labels are firmly attached and in a readable condition. Environmental Advice When disposing of any items associated with the lift, contact the appropriate local authority for advice. Periodic Testing For normal operation - use the control handset to raise and lower the Patient Support arms. This is to test for full and efficient movement. Automatic Stop Function:- With the Patient Support Arms raised well above their lowest position, lower them using the control handset and, at the same time, with your other hand, hold the Patient Support Arms up briefly. The motor will continue to run while the weight of the Patient Support Arms is held. This is quite normal. Release the button and carefully lower the Patient Support Arms. Use the lift s dual control lower button to repeat this check. This is to check that the automatic stop functions correctly. Emergency Stop:- To test the Emergency Stop function, use the control handset to lift or lower the support arms. While operating it, press the emergency stop button (see Fig. 1). Powered movement should stop immediately. Press the green reset button to return to the normal function (see Fig. 1). Repeat this check for the Chassis Legs Opening / Closing functions, and reset the button. Adjustable Width Chassis Function:- Use the control handset to open and close the chassis legs. Check for full travel and smooth movement. General Lift Condition:- Carry out a general visual inspection of all external parts, and test all functions for correct operation, to ensure that no damage has occurred during use. Warning: If in doubt about the correct functioning of the Chorus, remove it from use and contact the ARJO Service Department. Cleaning and Disinfecting the Toilet Chair and Frame (if included) To clean the exterior areas of the seat and frame, the hard surface disinfectant wipes mentioned above will be very effective. However, for internal and crevice areas of the equipment, ARJO recommends that the seat and frame be cleaned in accordance with your normal cleaning and disinfecting protocol. Disassembly of the Toilet Seat To remove the plastic toilet seat from the seat frame, pull the rear edge up sharply to disengage the locating lugs (see Fig. 36). Slide the seat forward a short distance until it is clear of the frame tubes and lift it away. Fig. 36 To replace the toilet seat, locate the seat holes over the seat frame tubes. Align the location lugs over the rear cross bar of the seat frame (see Fig. 37). Apply sharp downward blows onto the rear of the seat in two places directly above the location lugs, until the seat snaps back into place (see Fig. 38). P1248c 25

Care of Your Chorus Fig. 37 Warning: Always ensure that the seat is secure before a patient uses it. P1248a P1248b Warning: UK LIFTS ONLY: Important legislation came into force on December 5, 1998, which impacts the maintenance schedule for your patient lift(s), variable height baths and other raising and lowering equipment. The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 1998 and The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER 98) must be satisfied by the owner. A program of six monthly thorough inspections has been devised to comply with the law. Details can be obtained from ARJO Service UK. Parts lists and circuit diagrams are available on request from ARJO or its approved distributors. Warning: Spare parts, if required, are available from ARJO or its approved distributors. Special tools are required for certain component replacement. Maintenance Advice Fig. 38 Warning: ARJO recommends that the Chorus be maintained at regular intervals. See the ARJO Chorus Preventive Maintenance Schedule Literature, ARJO Part No. PMS001. With regular use, the following items are subject to wear: slings, batteries, sling cords, straps, castors. These items must be regularly inspected as described previously, and replaced as needed. Warning: The simplest, safest and most effective way to maintain your product is to have it methodically and professionally serviced by an ARJO approved representative using ARJO approved spare parts. For information on service and maintenance contracts, please contact your local ARJO distributor. 26
