1 Technology Offer 3-D woven, metallic micro-lattice materials for damping Summary applications A US - UK research group has developed innovative 3-D woven metallic micro-lattice materials which damp (attenuate) vibrations produced during the work cycle of machinery and engines. Unlike existing solutions, the materials remain functional at extremely high temperature and exhibit damping that is frequency independent. The group is seeking partners to incorporate this technology in commercial and/or military applications with their technical assistance. Expiration Date 05 July 2017 Reference TOUK Profile link Details Description Rotating machinery, engines, turbines and turbulent flow generate vibrations that fatigue materials, shorten the life cycle of components and reduce the comfort of occupants. The existing damping solutions typically fall into two categories: 1) materials, 2) devices/systems such as tuned mass dampers. Conventional damping materials are not suitable for applications at elevated temperatures above 1000 C due to their lower melting point. On the other hand, damping devices are tuned for specific frequencies and may not work properly in off-design conditions. The developed 3-D lattice material incorporates tuned mass damping into the metamaterial design. Thus it combines both the material and the device approach to damp (attenuate) vibrations. The lattice materials remain functional at temperatures above 1000C, and exhibit damping that is frequency independent, i.e. the damping loss factor does not decrease at higher frequencies. The materials can be metallurgically bonded to metallic and ceramic components and shaped to fit on various geometries. Brazing of the wires to increase the stiffness is also possible. The research group is offering its technical assistance to partners willing to incorporate this technology in commercial and military applications that require vibration damping. Advantages and Innovations 3-D woven lattice materials with orderly architecture consist of fill, warp and Z-wires. The ability to stack multiple layers of the wires through the thickness and functional brazing to achieve stiffness are unique features of this manufacturing route. 4 Technology Offer Automatic waste sorting system for portable batteries Summary that enables data management possibilities A Swedish SME within waste management, has developed an efficient waste battery sorting system. By using object recognition technology and artificial intelligence, the sorting system enables data collection which can be used for valuable reports and analysis regarding the waste's chemical compound and brand. The SME is interested to find partners within waste management/recycling that wish to implement the system and/or research partners for further development to applications. Expiration Date 04 April 2017 Reference TOSE Profile link Details Description The Swedish company offers an innovative fully automatic sorting solution for waste portable batteries. The system is a complete identification and sorting system for all cylindrical and 9V batteries with a total capacity of more than 600 kg (1200 lbs) per hour. The sorting unit collects information at the same time as the waste is sorted, which makes it a cost-effective system for identifying, registering and sorting waste material. All chemistries/batteries available today can be sorted and it's also possible to add new sorting fractions, such as different kinds of Lithium batteries. The identification of every battery is made with a machine vision sensor that captures images of every battery in high speed. The system is self-learning and intelligent, which enables it to recognise batteries even if they are dirty or damaged. After classification the batteries are separated with air jets into each respective fractions which allows for high accuracy under high speed. The system enables collectors and recyclers to efficiently sort mixed streams of batteries into separate material fractions with minimal labor and expertise required. The collected information about the waste enables waste management companies to squeeze out as much as possible from their collected waste while recyclers benefit from cost-effective sorting and quality control. The collected data and statistics can enable recyclers to easily send accurate reporting data to the environmental authorities upon request. The statistics can also be used to provide producers with valuable market information. The Swedish company is seeking industrial or/and municipalities/authorities within waste management that are interested to test/implement/validate the automatic sorting system in their waste management operations. They are interested in commercial/technical agreements with industrial/governmental partners as well as research and development projects with industry and academy/research institutes. 7 Technology Offer Biaxial electric drivetrain hybrid structure for passenger Summary cars A German university of applied sciences and two SMEs from Germany and the Netherlands have co-developed a new hybrid drive train structure for passenger cars. Innovations include the connection of electric powertrain, double rotating electric motor and combustion engine, optimized for a certain operating point in terms of energy efficiency. Partners from the automotive industry or the power electronics sector are sought for technological cooperation agreements to further improve the technology. Expiration Date 08 April 2017 Reference TODE Profile link Details Description Hybrid drives are crucial when it comes to ensuring societal mobility and environmentally friendly technological solutions at the same time. However, conventional solutions entail disadvantages with regard to their efficiency. The level of efficiency and the traction torque are determined by the operating point of the combustion engine. However, this operating point is not always optimal in conventional solutions. The German university of applied sciences and its two project partners from Germany and the Netherlands have developed a highly energy-efficient and at the same time economic hybridelectric all-wheel drivetrain topology for passenger cars. The purpose is to enable entirely electric inner-city operation (plug-in) and non-urban long-distance operation by the use of an efficient range extender. The combustion engine, which was designed as a point motor, is coupled to the first rotor of the double rotated machine (short DrEM). The second rotor of the DrEM is coupled via the front axis differential to the front wheels, so that the range extender is decoupled from the speed of the vehicle and works at the most efficient engine speed. This ensures an optimal operating point while shifting into the range of least specific fuel consumption, thus maximizing the overall system efficiency. The torque adjustment is realized by two electrical machines which are located close to the rear wheels. Through the torque adjustment at the rear wheel motors, the combustion engine works at the optimum engine speed point and at the optimum torque point. A further mode is the full electrical (and local emission-free) driving operation. For this mode the first rotor of the DrEM (which is coupled with the crank axle of the range extender) is locked. Thus, the DrEM works as a conventional electrical machine and increases the traction torque. By the free choice of the operating point of the range extender, a significant fuel reduction is possible in comparison to conventional hybrid power trains. By downsizing the combustion engine, the replacement of the manual gearbox and the cardan shaft it is possible to reduce costs and weight. This compensates the additional costs and weight of the new rear axis drive Ref: TODE Page 1 of 5
8 and the DrEM. Unlike a full electrical system, it is possible to reload the traction battery during driving. Thus the capacity of the traction battery can be designed much smaller in comparison to a full electrical drive train. This saves cost and weight, too. SMEs, industrial partners or research institutions from the the following sectors are sought for technological cooperation agreements to further improve the technology with regard to the efficiency: automotive, power electronics, electrical drives or battery systems. Advantages and Innovations - Decoupling of combustion engine and front axle differential allows for higher efficiency and lower fuel consumption - Operating point and traction torque are optimized (Point optimized range extender) - The combustion in the optimal operating point is 228 g/kwh. - Energy management for split hybrid structure and battery management system with integrated decentral, active cell balancing system lead to higher energy-efficiency - 40% weight reduction of the combustion engine compared to a typical four-cylinder engine. - The simulated efficiency is 25% higher than in a conventional vehicle. The road test results are still pending. - In full electrical mode the range is between 25 and 30 km with the installed 5.9 kwh traction battery. 12 Technology Offer Novel protective headgear reacts to blunt trauma by triggering an interior cooling system, to reduce brain injury Summary A UK company has developed a patented device modelled inside protective headgear (helmets) that automatically reacts to major blunt trauma by triggering a strongly endothermic (cooling) response. The device reduces brain swelling in the event of an accident and has a wide range of applications. They are seeking motorcycle, sports (equine, snow), military, paramedic/hospital or healthcare companies to co-develop the innovation to new applications via joint ventures and manufacturing agreements. Expiration Date 17 July 2017 Reference TOUK Profile link Details Description Head injuries occur in 80% of all motorcycle accident fatalities. A key contributor is brain swelling inside the helmet and the response time to address the issue. A standard motorcycle helmet has polystyrene, which acts as an energy absorber but also as an insulator. When an accident takes place and the brain swells, the heat is kept trapped inside the helmet, causing further swelling and increasing the chance of brain injury. The UK company's innovation directly addresses this problem by cooling the rider's head postaccident. The active technology works by triggering an endothermic chemical reaction inside the helmet lining at the moment of impact. The helmet immediately cools the motorcyclist's head, keeping it cold even before the emergency services could have been called. The technology has been fitted to high quality existing motorcycle helmets that have passed stringent safety tests and has been patented in 18 countries globally. While currently designed and fitted to motorcycle helmets, the company are seeking company partners in other sectors which might benefit from this technology and be interested in adapting this to their respective headgear. These sectors include, but are not limited to, the military, disability support/medical devices, paramedic/hospital, skiing, equine, car racing and other sportswear providers. They are hoping to take the device to new markets via co-development in joint venture and manufacturing agreements. Ref: TOUK Page 1 of 4
13 Advantages and Innovations The technology represents the first fundamental change in headgear protection in the last 50 years, with all previous designs using passive technology serving only to protect the head through the use of appropriate materials, which repel or cushion impacts. The CFK-1 has a carbon fibre and Kevlar shell positioning it in the premium helmet category. The CFK-1 has been tested and shown to be one of the strongest helmets available as well as having a recent design based on a Shoei leading premium helmet to fit the need for a recognised helmet. The design of a new helmet has also allowed the innovation of adding a visor locking system, which has long been seen as a weakness of most currently available helmets. The helmet can include an emergency beacon transmitter and an ionising cleaning station that cleans, dehumidifies and deodorises the helmet.
