For more information visit or Or Compiled by Mark Goodchild 2013 rules update - what does it mean for me? Note: Written from the perspective of a Hot Rod racer but electric equipment rules are equally as relevant for Saloon Stox. But note that Saloon Stox can use 10.5 motors with 1S rather than 13.5 and with a brushed motor they can use 6-cell Nimh. For 2013 there are big changes in the popular Hot Rod series. There are new cars, motors, cells and speed controllers all now legal. Meaning 2013 could be one of the most exciting seasons to date. All this means you can go out and use a totally different setup from last year. Literally everything you used from 2012 can be replaced with something else... But what does this mean to a driver with a 2012 car? A 2012 Hot Rod is still 100% legal for the 2013 championship and it will still be competitive. Last year the Hot Rod class used the popular Mardave G2 brushed motor and a brushed speed controller under 65 powered by 4-cell Nimh. This is still legal in 2013 with the speed controller price restriction finally being removed. That said the popular Speedmaster or Mardave G28 speed controllers dominate this section and this is likely to continue. At Wycombe the lap record is held by a brushed car and although the brushless cars are showing pace to get close or beat this time the consistency of the brushed cars still make it hard to beat. But what else can I easily do, to my 2012 car to make it better? If you are on a limited budget and do not want to change your current Mardave v12 based car, you do not need to! However there are 3 good options which we can recommend: 1. Change the front wheels and stub axles to the bearing type. This makes the front wheels free run much more easily and allows the front of the car to turn better. Also the front end is less prone to wear that causes slop in the front end. 2. Change the rear motor pod to the new alloy one provided on the Mardave CEC or OE cars. This allows adjustable ride height and better heat dissipation. 3. Replace the old V12 wishbones for the stiffer upgraded Mardave wishbones. These are less likely to break and are very stiff. Check the front track is still 160mm and does not exceed this. These modifications are cheap to do and do improve the car. The old Mardave V12 cars are still capable of competing and the weight limit remains at 1KG - so brushless, carbon/grp cars need to add weight to be legal. Okay, now I'm interested- what are these 2013 rules all about?
The construction rules can be found here: Chassis: There are big changes to the rule book which now mean the following cars are legal: Mardave V12 VRX OE Schumacher Superstox Both these cars look fantastic and offer a more up to date looking chassis for oval racing. The Schumacher has an interesting rear end with link and o-rings controlling the suspension. The Mardave OE has a chassis based on the carbon circuit car and the principles of setup are the same as seen on the V12 VRX car. The front-end has been upgraded to use a plate which can allow simple camber and caster adjustment. The older alloy chassis based Mardave v12; v12 VRX, etc. are also legal of course. Other manufacturers such as HPI also appear to be building cars for GT12 racing that may be legal for Hot Rods in the future as the rules have been opened up rather than naming models of cars. I.e. dimensions, chassis material, etc. There is a price limit to keep the cost down of The Mardave CEC is very similar to the OE but as standard has a front track width of 162mm. This means it is not 100% legal out of the box. The rules stipulate that a Hot Rod front track width needs to be 160mm and Mardave do a replacement front-plate to ensure the CEC has a legal track width. Electrics: In 2013 you can still use a 4-cell Nimh brushed car with the Mardave G2 motor. This is still legal and fast. However you can also use brushless technology for the first time in Although the start-up costs appear higher the maintenance time and cost is much lower long term. Brushless motors can last for months if not years and the new Lipo cells if looked after correctly do not degrade in performance like the Nimh cells. The motors do not get dirty like the old brushed motors so no more cotton bus and motor cleaner! Performance wise we appear to lose a little punch but the torque from the motors is so good so you can pull bigger gear ratios and faster top speeds... So potentially the brushless cars can be faster but harder to drive well.
So it all sounds great...what can I buy and how much will it cost? The BRCA maintain an electric board homologation list for approved motors, batteries and speed controllers. This can be viewed here: Motors: For Hot Rod racing the legal motors are 13.5T and should cost under 60. This needs some careful consideration as although some motors can be purchased under 60 it is the RRP which is important. So take care and ensure the motor has a RRP under 60. From the list there are 3 which I am 100% sure are club and BRCA National legal these are: The reason these motors are 100% legal is that the RRP of all 3 is under 60. I have tested the Speed Passion which is included with the keenly Core RC combo and it offers good performance. Timing can be adjusted up to 10 degrees only but with the right gear ratios the lap times are competitive. Other timing boards are available for this motor to increase the timing further but it is currently not clear if they are legal for BRCA oval events. Certainly for GT12 racing you cannot change rotors or timing boards. I have also tested the Dynamite motor which offers up to 40 degrees of adjustable timing. Again this appears to be a good powerful motor. For club racing we are more open and will allow other motors to run assuming they are 13.5T. Speed Controllers: For Hot Rod racing you must use a speed controller that supports blinky mode. This means no timing advance is provided from the speed controller and no dynamic turbo function is switched on. This keeps performance at a manageable level for our small oval tracks. Some speed controllers such as the Core RC Pace 45 speed controller are setup in blinky mode as standard. However other speed controllers such as the 1S HobbyWing speed controller are not set up in this way. Therefore a program card is required to upload blinky firmware to the speed controller.
A blinky speed control list is provided by the electric board. This list shows which firmware version is needed to use blinky mode on each speed control. The list also shows how to determine blinky is switched on. A link is seen below: %27s%20v2.3% pdf I would recommend purchasing a speed controller from this list to avoid problems. However at BRCA events other speed controllers which are not on the list are permitted assuming you can prove blinky is in operation. This should allow cheap Hobbywing clones to be used. Note: Another important consideration is which speed controls work well on 1S. The Hobbywing 1S and Core RC Pace 45 speed controllers offer 1S support as standard. Also the other Hobbywing speed controllers can support 1S. If the speed controller has a minimum of 2S input voltage then a voltage booster is required, they will not work with 1S, I have tried the Novak Smart Boost which works well and is priced around 30. There is no price limit on speed controllers in 2013 the key point is that it supports blinky mode and it is switched on. There is little advantage in spending vast sums of money on a speed controller and then using blinky. Remember the speed controller also must have reverse. The Core speed controller is particularly strong in this regard as it has an instant reverse. Very much needed for oval racing! Cells: You must use 1S Lipo in this class of racing. I would recommend making sure these are on the BRCA list. Any cells not on the BRCA list will not be permitted at National events. The latest list can be viewed here: Remember you must have a Lipo charger for these types of cells. Charging 1S Lipo with a charger not capable will damage the Lipo and may cause a fire. Core RC Pace combo:
The easiest way into brushless Hot Rod or Saloon Stox racing is the Core RC Pace 45 system. This system gives you the Pace 45 speed controller, Speed Passion 13.5 motor and 1S Core RC Lipo. This system is priced at so is very reasonable. The motor and speed controller are 100% Hot Rod legal for nationals and competitive. The 1S Lipo pack provided is okay to get started and can post good lap times. There are stronger cells available that offer better performance and punch. There are good deals to be had on this already competitively priced package. E.g. Kamtec are offering a free shell of your choice. Lipo Safety: For charging you will require a special charger capable of supporting Lipo batteries. Not doing so and using a Nimh charger is not permitted at any club and will cause damage to the cells and probably a fire. When charging Lipo cells at any club you will need to use a Lipo safety bag. You place your battery inside the bag during charging just in case the cell gets unstable and catches fire. This risk is small but potentially a Lipo fire can cause incredible damage. Anyone charging a Lipo without a bag will be asked to use a bag or stop racing and return home. These chargers are not necessarily an expensive purchase and I have been using the GT Power A606 Dual Charger for some time as I used this for charging my Nimh also. It is available from various companies for a reasonable cost and also has the ability to take 12V or 240V input. The important thing is that you must use a Lipo charge settings on your charger. The following is a guide to getting started with Lipo: You MUST use a Lipo charging bag when charging Lipo batteries. Without a bag we will stop you charging and racing.
You must use a Lipo charger using the correct Lipo charge setting. If in doubt please ask another racer. Please do not try to overcharge your cells. 1S voltage is 4.20V and 2S voltage 8.40V. Trying to peak Lipo cells does not work as the charger should not allow it and they do not drop in voltage like Nimh. Please select the correct charger ampage setting. Recommended is 1C charge current. This means if the mah of the cells is 3400 then 3.4 amps, 5000 then 5.0 amps, 6400 then 6.4 amps. Charging at higher ampage may cause the cells to become unstable=fire. Note, there is no need to discharge Lipo cells in-between race meetings. Also you should not store them fully charged. Half-charged is ideal and it makes sense to store in the Lipo safety bag. If for some reason a fire does occur then the best way of putting the fire out is to use the new sand buckets. This sand is available at the end of each pit bench.
All cars will use replica GT shells or club alternatives from the list of eligible shells given in Appendix 1
