3 INTRODUCTION Power supply quality, continuity and reliability even under contingencies are the hallmark efficient Distribution and Transmission utilities respectively. Voltage excursions, consumer services fered and frequency variations define the Quality power supply. Degraded quality supply begets consumers' ire whereas heavy losses cripple the finances the utilities, besides raising the tariff power. Low Voltages are, by and large, the result imbalance between the reactive power demand and supply. The reactive power demand arises not only from inductive load points, but also from system components like transformers and lines resulting in the following: Poor Power factor leading to bad voltage prile and increased losses. Overloading network components due to the drawl higher current. Introduction harmonics in the system due causing saturation system components and distortions in the supply wave form, detrimental to the equipment. Long EHV transmission lines also generate reactive power, due to the capacitance the line, during the light load conditions. The capacitive output the line is almost constant except for variations in the voltage whereas during peak load reactive power loss, proportional to the square the current far exceeds the line's reactive power generation. The low receiving end voltage adversely affects the stability the line and/or its power transmission capability. The reactive power demand needs to be met, preferably at the point where it arises to obviate problems stated above effectively and economically. Reactance lines also has to be compensated in long transmission lines for enhancing steady state transmission capability and stability. In respect power factor improvement, shunt capacitors are the most versatile, flexible, economical, and fastest to be installed. Series capacitors mostly serve as automatic voltage regulators besides enhancing transmission capability and stability. Thyristor controlled capacitors and reactors have been fast acting and cost effective. However, the life the capacitors depends on proper operating conditions and effective maintenance. Considering the importance Reactive power management in the Power systems, with nearly 70% the energy generated being consumed by the inductive load, CIRE proposes to conduct a 4 day training programme on Power factor Improvement and Reactive Power Management from 8th to 11th July, 2013, in its campus. PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES To study effective methods improving Power factor and voltage regulations and thereby reducing system losses. Learn means for reduction in line reactance for improving Transmission line loading capabilities. To provide insight into the design and Operation and maintenance aspects various equipment in usage for reactive power compensation. To study the effective methods their installation, testing and commissioning, operation and maintenance and protection system equipment associated with Reactive power management, to ensure enhancement life expectancy. Analyse various causes failure and suggest remedial measures PROGRAMME CONTENTS Fundamental principles, definitions, useful formulae, functions and applications capacitors Effect Reactive power: Concepts Technical loss reduction and Power factor and Voltage prile Improvement with Reactive power compensation Equipment for Reactive Power Compensation (a) Capacitors, (b) Shunt Reactor, (c) Series reactor (d) Series Capacitors and (e) Static Var Compensation.
4 Salient features Selection site, erection, testing & commissioning to operation and maintenance related equipment. 11kv and LT switched capacitors and automatic switching Capacitors Capacitor bank formation and Neutral grounding. Associated switch gear, control gear and protection for power capacitors and capacitor banks. Salient features series capacitor, its erection and operation and maintenance Salient features Shunt and series reactors. Operation and maintenance and testing and commissioning and protection Shunt Reactors. Case studies capacitor bank/ shunt reactor failures. Field visit. PARTICIPANT LEVEL Junior and middle level executives Utilities dealing with Distribution, Transmission, High Energy Consuming Industries, private Entrepreneurs Independent Power Producers and Research/Academic Institutions. PEDAGOGY The programme will be conducted in an interactive environment, with faculty acting as facilitators to create a participative learning environment along with Field Visit. Resources persons from respective field are identified as guest speakers. DURATION & VENUE 4 days from 8 to 11 July, 2014 at CIRE Campus, Sivarampally, Aramghar 'X'Road, Hyderabad. The programme is residential.
