Grid FP6 Preparatory activities 2003 Workshop held on January focusing on constituency building Launch of expert group to identify research priorities towards the next generation Grid (April) Establish inventory of on-going Grid research in Europe and beyond Position future European IST Grid and Infrastructure actions with respect to the US Cyberinfrastructure Initiative (proposed funding 1020 M$/year) Workshop: Grid-based enabling application technologies (28-29 April) Workshop: Grid platforms for e-enterprise applications (planned) Concertation Meeting of FP5 Grid projects (18-19 June) 15
Recommendations Grid Workshop Jan 2003 Make inventory of present Grid research Technology re-use should be assured Learn from 1 st generation projects / Inventory by GridStart Project Set up a small group of visionary experts to Identify research priorities for the next 5-7 years and propose pragmatic steps to be taken; Propose a roadmap for the implementation of these steps (in view of upcoming calls for proposals); Align technology priorities and means of implementation with policy objectives, e.g. ERA, European Centres of Excellence, etc. Network/liaise and discuss findings with the Grid research community; Propose actions to increase efficiency in international collaboration. Workshop results: 16
Outline Grid research in FP6-IST IST/Grid in the context of ERA policy Conclusions 17
European research policy context European Research Area (Lisbon Summit, March 2000) IST-FP6 to boost the emergence of ERA! Grids: a main strategic objective! R&D investments from 1.9% up to 3% of GDP by 2010 (Barcelona Council, March 2002) 18
ERA: a new context for EU supported RTD Moving towards a European level Research policy Strengthen co-operation between National and EU Activities Improve links between National and EU policies and schemes Development of a shared vision on European RTD Potential for co-funding arrangements FP6 is a major instrument to realise ERA Realising ERA will require New thinking: more strategic and goal oriented New approach: concentration, critical mass and flexibility FP6 is not business as usual! New scope: taking account of the international dimension of RTD (greater awareness of who s doing what) New instruments: Integrated Projects (IPs) & Networks of Excellence (NoEs) 19
FP6 is not business as usual! From Project -thinking to Initiative - thinking New instruments: Integrated Projects & Networks of Excellence More strategic thinking Develop Europe-wide approaches Making sure that Community funding helps aggregate EU, Member State & private funded effort(s) It is not just supporting a particular RTD work 20
ERA: the co-ordination dimension Objectives: Support the member states in developing common visions/activities and co-ordinating their effort Using if needed, the FP6 instruments Approach Two main layers: 1- Exchange of information: between the MSs and ACCs 2- Help develop common initiatives Complements the ISTAG work. To be organised at programme level and at domain level Using Co-ordination Actions to prepare/initiate co-ordination 21
Outline Grid research in FP6-IST IST/Grid in the context of ERA policy Conclusions and issues for discussion 22
Conclusions Grid technologies will revolutionise the Internet of tomorrow as the Web did for the Internet of today Grid research represents a key priority in IST-FP6 and will serve as a means for the evolution of ERA Need for stronger co-ordination of existing Community, Member States and international Grid research initiatives, e.g. through a Virtual Grid Middleware Laboratory The shift of Grids from e-science to industry will in future reap the benefits for European business, industry and society 23
Issues for discussion Co-ordination of Member States Grid programmes Global collaboration Specific issues Italian Presidency events IST 2003 Grid themes Co-ordination actions 24
