Notes on this manual 1.1 Validity This manual describes the assembly, installation, commissioning and maintenance of the following RADIUS Home - APV Inverters: APV M-TL-DM APV M-TL-DM APV M-TL-DM This manual does not cover any details concerning equipment connected to the APV...-2M-TL-DM ( i.e. PV modules). Information concerning the connected equipment is available from the equipment manufacturer. 1.2 Target Group This manual is for qualified personnel. Qualified personnel have received training and have demonstrated skills and knowledge in the construction and operation of this device. Qualified personnel are trained to deal with the dangers and hazards involved in installing electric devices. Additional information You will find further information on special topics in the download area at Safety Appropriate Usage The RADIUS Home - APV is a PV Inverter that converts DC Current from PV generator into AC current. The RADIUS Home - APV is suitable for mounting indoors and outdoors. You can use the AC current generated as follows: Household grid Energy flows into the house grid. The consumers connected, for example, household appliances or lighting, consume the energy. The energy left over is fed into the public grid. When the RADIUS Home - APV is not gernerating any energy, e.g., at night, the connected consumers are supplied by the public grid. The RADIUS Home - APV does not have its own energy meter. When energy is fed into the public grid, the energy meter spins backwards. Public grid Energy is fed directly into the public grid. The RADIUS Home - APV is connected to a separate energy meter. The energy produced is compensated at a rate defined by the utility company. Stand alone grid The RADIUS Home - APV is connected to a stand-alone grid. The energy generated is consumed directly on site. Surplus energy can be stored in batteries. RADIUS Home 5

6 Info Policies vary from one utility company to another. Consult with a representative of the local utility company before proceeding. DC and AC disconnect switch Separate the RADIUS Home - APV securely from the grid and the PV generators using DC and AC disconnect switch. You must provide an AC circuit breaker. If RADIUS Home - APV DC Switch is included in the delivery of the RADIUS Home - APV, it must be used for operating the inverter. Grounding the PV modules The APV M-TL-DM, APV M-TL-DM and APV M-TL-DM is a transformerless inverter. Hence, it has no galvanic separation. Do not ground the DC circuits of the PV modules connected to the RADIUS Home - APV. Only ground the mounting frame of the PV modules. If you connect grounded modules to the RADIUS Home - APV, the error message PV ISO Low is displayed. We normally recommend monocrystalline silicon and polycrystalline silicon modules for transformerless technology. However, some thin-film technologies have been developed which manufacturers claim can also be used with a transformerless inverter. 6 RADIUS Home

8 3. Unpacking and inspection Please check the contents of the shipping box upon receipt. 9 4. Installation 4.1 Safety instructions Warning! A) Do not remove the casing. Inverter contains no user serviceable parts. Refer servicing to qualified service personnel. All wiring and electrical installation should be conducted by a qualified service personnel and must meet national requirements of AS4777 or VDE B) Both AC and DC voltage sources are terminated inside the PV Inverter. Please disconnect these circuits before servicing. C) When a photovoltaic panel is exposed to light, it generates a DC voltage. When connected to this equipment, a photovoltaic panel will charge the DC link capacitors. D) Energy stored in this equipment s DC link capacitors presents a risk of electric shock. Even after the unit is disconnected from the grid and photovoltaic panels, high voltages may still exist inside the PV-Inverter. Do not remove the casing until at least 5 minutes after disconnecting all power sources. E) This unit is designed to feed power to the public power grid (utility) only. Do not connect this unit to an AC source or generator. Connecting the inverter to external devices could result in serious damage to your equipment. F) Carefully remove the unit from its packaging and inspect for external damage. If you find any imperfections, please contact your local dealer. G) Although designed to meet all safety requirements, some parts and surfaces of inverter become hot during operation. To reduce the risk of injury, do not touch the heat sink at the back of the PV Inverter or nearby surfaces while Inverter is operating. 4.2 Selecting the mounting location A) The installation method and mounting location must be suitable for the weight and dimensions of the inverter. Select a wall or solid vertical surface that can support the PV-Inverter. B) Mount on a solid surface, the mounting location must be accessible at all times. C) Installation can be vertical or tilted backwards by max. 15. D) The connection area must point downwards. E) Do not install horizontally. RADIUS Home 9

10 4.3 Mounting the wall mounting frame A) Inverter requires adequate cooling space. Allow at least 20cm space above and below the inverter. B) Using the mounting frame as a template, drill 4 holes as shown in the diagram. C) Fix the mounting frame as shown in the diagram. Do not tighten the screws so that they are flush to the wall. Leave 2 to 4 mm exposed. 312 mm 270 mm 340 mm 380 mm 4.4 Mounting the inverter on the wall mounting frame A) Hang the inverter on the mounting frame. B) Insert safety-lock screws through the bottom section of the frame to secure the inverter. 4.5 Checking inverter installation A) Check the upper straps of PV-Inverter and ensure that it fits on the frame. B) Check that the PV inverter is mounted securely by trying to raise it from the bottom. The PV-Inverter should remain firmly attached. C) Select the installation location so that the status display can be easily viewed. D) Choose a strong mounting wall to prevent vibrations while inverter is operating. 10 RADIUS Home

11 5. Electrical Connection 5.1 System diagram with electrical connection of inverter A) PV Panel: Provide DC power to the inverter. B) Inverter: converts DC (direct current) power from the PV panel(s) to AC (alternating current) power. Because the inverter is grid-connected it controls the current amplitude according to the PV panel power supply. The inverter always tries to convert the maximum power from your PV panel(s). C) Connection system: This interface between Utility and PV inverter may consist of an electrical circuit breaker, a fuse and connecting terminals. To comply with local safety standards and codes, the connection system should be designed and implemented by a qualified technician. D) Utility: Referred to as grid in this manual, is the way your electricity company provides power to your home. Please note that inverter can only be connected to low-voltage systems (namely, 230VAC, 50Hz). 12 5.3 Connecting to the grid (AC utility) A) Measure the grid voltage and frequency. It should be 230VAC, 50Hz and single phase. B) Open the breaker or fuse between PV Inverter and the grid. 13 5.4 Connect to PV Panel (DC input) A) Always make sure that the maximum open circuit voltage (Voc) of each PV string is less than 600 Vdc. The length of the input wire must be less than 30m. B) Use MC (Multi-contact) connectors for PV array terminals. C) Connect the positive and negative terminals from the PV panel to positive (+) terminals and negative (-) terminals on the PV inverter. D) Before connecting PV panels to DC terminals, please make sure the polarity is correct. Incorrect polarity could permanently damage the unit. Check short-circuit current of the PV string. The total short-circuit current of the PV string should be less than the inverter s maximum DC current. E) High voltages exist when the PV panel is exposed to the sun. To reduce risk of electric shock, avoid touching live components and treat connection terminals carefully. F) Cable requirements <-- DC Power switch not included in APV...-2M-TL-DM-UK version. APV M-TL-DM _ APV M-TL-DM _ APV M-TL-DM _ Commissioning checks A) When the PV panels are connected and their output voltage is greater than 100 VDC but the AC grid is not yet connected, the LCD display shows the following messages in order: RADIUS Home - APV Inverter -> No AC connection and the LED will be red. B) Close the AC breaker or fuse between the PV inverter and the grid. The normal operating sequence begins (it take 60 seconds). C) Under normal operating conditions the LCD displays Power: xxxx.xw. That is the power fed to the grid. The LED turns green. D) This completes the check. RADIUS Home 13

Display 6.1 LCD display Starting-up display sequence: once the PV power is sufficient, the inverter displays the following start-up information: Module: xxxxxx SerNo: xxxxxxxxxx FW Version: x.x.x Connect in: xxs Connect : OK Power: xxxx.xw 6.2 LCD control To save power, the LCD display s backlight automatically turns off after 30 seconds. The inverter display can be controlled by knocking on the front of it. The first line of the display shows inverter status information; there are 5 inverter states (see table below). 16 6.3 Setting the LCD display The LCD can be controlled by knocking on the display to define the display language, contrast, auto-test and frequency. When the LCD is dark Knock to make it becomes bright. 17 7. Operating modes The inverter has three different operating modes. 7.1 Normal mode In this mode, the inverter works normally. Whenever the supplied power from PV panel is sufficient (voltage>120vdc), the inverter converts power generated by the PV panel to the grid. If the power is insufficient (voltage<120vdc), the inverter enters a waiting state. Whilst waiting the inverter uses just enough power from the PV panel to monitor the internal system status. In normal mode the LED is green. 7.2 Fault mode The internal intelligent controller can continuously monitor and adjust the system status. If the inverter detects any unexpected conditions such as grid problems or internal failure, it will display the information on its LCD and the LED will be red. 7.3 Shutdown mode During periods of little or no sunlight, the inverter automatically stops running. In this mode, the inverter does not take any power from the grid. The display and LEDs on the front panel do not work. Note! Operating the inverter is quite easy. During normal operation, the inverter runs automatically. However, to achieve maximum inverter conversion efficiency, please read the following information: 7.4 Automatic ON-OFF The inverter starts up automatically when DC power from the PV panel is sufficient. Once the PV inverter starts it enters one of the following 3 states: 1) Standby: The PV string can only provide just enough voltage to meet the minimum requirements of the controller. 2) Waiting: When the PV string DC voltage is greater than 100V, the inverter enters a enters waiting state and attempts to connect to the grid. 3) Normal operation (first start up): When PV string DC voltage is greater than 150V, the inverter operates in the normal state. 18 8. Inverter status The inverter is designed to be user-friendly; therefore, the status of the inverter can be easily understood by reading the information shown on the front panel display. All possible messages are shown in the following table. 19 9. Communications 9.1 Communications software instructions APV LigthNET is a PC software which communicates with the APV inverter to analyse its operating state. It is a convenient way of determining the inverter s real-time operating state and operation log. Specification: A) Communicate with inverter by RS232 and Bluetooth. B) Construct net with inverter and APV NET via RS232, Bluetooth and the Internet. C) Two Interfaces: Multi Inverter Interface and Wave Data Interface. D) In Multi Inverter Interface: View the operating data of up to 4 inverters at any one time (you can select your own inverters and parameters to compare). E) In Wave Data Interface: Query the inverter real-time and history power, operating data and error information. F) Multilingual: English, French, German, Spanish and etc. G) Supports the following operating systems: Win XP / Vista/win 7/2000/ Monitoring After setting the software the user can monitor the inverter. Detailed inverter information is displayed on the right-hand side of the main user interface. 9.3 Detailed information For detailed information on how to configure the software and other functions, please refer to the APV Light- NET Manual on the CD. 20 10. Trouble shooting In most situations, the Inverter requires very little service. However, if the inverter is not able to function correctly, please refer to the following instructions before contacting your local dealer. Should any problems arise, the LED on the front panel will be red and the LCD will display the relevant information. Please refer to sections 10.1 and 10.2 for a list of potential problems and their solutions System fault Ground Fault 1) The ground current is too high. 2) Unplug the inputs from the PV generator and check the AC system. 3) After the cause of the fault is cleared, reconnect the PV panel and check the PV inverter status. 4) If the problem persists, please contact our Service Centre. Isolation Fault 1) Check the impedance is between PV (+) & PV (-) and the PV inverter is earthed. The impedance must be greater than 8M ohm. 2) If the problem persists, please contact our Service Centre. No Utility 1) Grid is not connected. 2) Check grid connection cables. 3) Check grid usability. Error message Meanings Suggestion No AC Connection No utility grid connected or the utility grid is abnormal. 1. Check AC wiring, especially the grounding wire. 2. Check utility status (Voltage and frequency). 3. Contact RADIUS Solar Service. AC V Outrange Grid voltage out of Check grid voltage range AC F Outrange Grid frequency out of Check grid frequency. Update firmware if the version is below G.1.3. range PV Isolation Low Insulation problem. Insulation impedance between PV+ (PV-) and ground too low. 1. Check if panel casing earth properly. 2. Check if the inverter earth properly. 3. Check the impedance of PV (+) & PV (-) between ground (must be greater than 8 MΩ). Residual I High GFCI Fault The reason can be the GFCI module is damaged or processor calculation wrong. Replace the inverter to see if the new one will display the same message. Output High DCI Output current DC Unplug the inputs from the PV generator and check the peripheral AC system offset too high PV Voltage High PV panel voltage too high Check the PV open circuit voltage, and see if it exceeds the inverter s maximum input voltage. Auto Test Failed Auto test didn t passed Check grid voltage and frequency. Note! Another try with a normal APV Home inverter can help to decide whether inverter or peripheral devices cause the system fault. 20 RADIUS Home

21 10.2 Inverter failure PV Over Voltage 1) Check the open PV voltage to see whether it is greater than or too close to 600VDC. 2) If PV voltage is less than 600VDC, and the problem still occurs, please contact your local Service Centre. Consistent Fault 1) Disconnect PV (+) or PV (-) from the input, restart the PV inverter. 2) If this fails to clear the fault, please contact our Service Centre. > If there is no display on the panel, please check PV input connections. If the voltage is higher than 150V, please contact your local Service Centre. > During periods of little or no sunlight, the PV-Inverter may continuously start up and shut down. This is due to insufficient power generated to operate the control circuits. Error message Meanings Suggestion Error V reference voltage fault Mainly caused by control board. 25 12. Warranty conditions The warranty is valid from the date of delivery of the Gefran RADIUS products. The standard manufacturer s warranty, included in the price of the product, is valid for 5 years starting from the date of delivery. Before the end of that period you may purchase the RWE to extend the manufacturer s warranty and receive annual cover for between 1 and 5 years. At the end of this period the warranty will automatically expire, without the need for notice and no further extension will be available. Parts that are repaired or replaced under the terms of this warranty are guaranteed for 12 months from the date of shipment of the repaired parts.
