1 SET-PLAN IMPLEMENTATION The Steering Group of the SET-Plan in its last meeting on October 28 th, 2010 agreed to speed-up the execution of activities of the Implementation Plans (IPs) of the European Industrial Initiatives (EIIs). It was decided to collectively identify the possibilities for launching joint actions between Member States and/or Member States and the European Commission. The mapping exercise carried out through this questionnaire builds upon this decision of the Steering Group. It aims to identify topics for leveraging best ongoing efforts with complementary joint actions, as prioritized by the Implementation Plans. In this phase the mapping will focus on projects and activities with a total budget higher than 1 M. We trust that you also consider the success of this exercise important for the immediate implementation of the SET-Plan. The INOVGRID infrastructure will be exploited for this purpose playing thus a key role in all the developments. PROJECT GOALS & OBJECTIVES Goals: Indicate main qualitative goals Rev. 1 January 2011 Page 2 of 6 Development and implementation of advanced concepts regarding the grid interface of both the microgeneration systems and the batteries of electric vehicles (smart vehicle grid interfaces. Definition of local control strategies exploiting the smart metering concepts involved in the InovGrid infrastructure to deal with the charging approaches of the batteries of the electric vehicles. Specify advanced communication solutions to support the large scale integration of microgeneration systems and electric vehicles. Development and adaptation of steady state and dynamic simulation platforms in order to evaluate the technical impacts of progressive integration of electrical vehicles and microgeneration systems

3 taking into account the different battery charging approaches (smart charging, multi tariff charging and dumb charging). Evaluation of the impacts resulting from the large scale integration of microgeneration systems and electrical vehicles in the Portuguese power systems, involving the distribution and transmission networks, the generation system, the reserves adequacy and also the market issues. Identification of remuneration models regarding the ancillary services that can be provided by the storage capacity of the electrical vehicles batteries. Prospective analysis of business models of the charging points to be available and their impact on the electrical networks operation. Development of pre-industrial prototypes of smart vehicle grid interface and, power electronic interfaces of microgeneration units with specific local control capabilities. Development of pre-industrial prototypes of the several controllers involved on the hierarchical control and management system of distribution networks. Development of pre-industrial prototypes of communication solutions. Assembly of a laboratory infrastructure in order to consolidate the technical competences that will support the change of the distribution networks operation paradigm towards a more decentralized control and management with increasing levels of microgeneration systems as well as the mobility paradigm as a result of the electric vehicles deployment. Test and evaluation of the performance of the preindustrial prototypes. Assessment of the performance of the electric vehicles batteries and their aging issues. Experimental validation of the developed concepts, communication solutions and control strategies that allow the future distribution networks operation in both interconnected and islanded mode, including the charging approaches of the electric vehicles batteries.
