August FEATURES Energy efficiency Motor control and motor protection Lighting REGULARS Contractors Corner Buyers Guide People on the move IN THIS ISSUE ECB SA defends voluntary listing system THE Electrical Contractors Association of South Africa has reacted to the conflicting and confusing messages being circulated to electrical contractors regarding the voluntary listing system recently introduced by the Electrical Contractors Board of South Africa (ECB SA). Dirk Engelbrecht, president of the ECA(SA) says this voluntary listing process is confusing contractors and, to clear any misunderstanding, has sent out an to ECA(SA) members advising them that this process is not compulsory. Contractors need not respond to calls from the ECB SA to register their businesses on the ECB database, warns Engelbrecht. He advises contractors who choose to register with the ECB to contact the ECB directly and pay the required monies. The ECB listed contractor document issued to contractors who voluntarily applied for such listing is not the official registration Specialist to set impeccable PV standards in SA certificate for electrical contractors only DoL can issue a Certificate of Registration in terms of the Act, stresses Engelbrecht. Sparks Electrical News contacted Tony McDonald, the chairman of the ECB SA, who has confirmed that the ECB(SA) has, indeed, introduced a voluntary listing system but he has defended the action, saying, This is to ensure that standards are maintained. He says that, for 20 years until 31 August, 2012 the ECB SA was the non-governmental association responsible for registering electrical contractors; and the ECB SA has maintained an electronic data base of all registered contractors. However, since DoL took over the registration of contractors on 1 September, 2012, the system has been fraught with problems. This decision took the industry back 20 years and created tremendous confusion in the industry, says McDonald, adding that DoL does not have an upto-date electronic data base of registered electrical contractors. He says that the ECB SA s board representatives who are representative of all stakeholders such as consumer unions, professional bodies, property owners, government bodies, municipalities have asked us the ECB SA to ensure that standards are maintained. One way to achieve this is for the ECB SA to establish a voluntary listing of correctly registered persons and contractors. By correctly listed we mean registered in terms of the Electrical Installation Regulations with the Department of Health and Safety. We also offer a facilitating service to any contractor requesting it. We help contractors with their registration process by assisting them with advice of where to go at DoL, who to see at DoL and we also supply contractors with the necessary documentation. Once they are registered with DoL, they may then join the ECB voluntarily for an annual fee of R350 and we will list them on our database. Dirk Engelbrecht, president of the ECA(SA). McDonald adds that the ECS SA database is available to members of the public who are looking for registered electrical contractors and, to name a few: the Institute of SA Property Owners (SAPOA), the SA National Consumer Union (SANCU), the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), the National Regulator of Compulsory Standards (NRCS), and the Department of Labour (DoL). Only contractors who are registered with the DoL are included in that voluntary listing, he stresses. Setting PV standards in South Africa: Dr Ronald Lange. DR Ronald Lange, ART Solar s chief operating offer, is an internationally recognised photovoltaic (PV) specialist who will spend a year with the company to establish impeccable manufacturing standards and the transfer of knowledge and skills. He will ensure the company continues to make a valuable contribution to renewable energy in Africa, as he has in Asia, North America and Europe. An important focus for Dr Lange is to raise awareness locally about the possibilities and the limitations faced in the development of PV in other parts of the world and to ensure costly mistakes are not repeated in South Africa. With his expertise, ART Solar is able to develop PV modules that are adapted for local conditions, rather than simply expecting European systems to apply effectively in South Africa, says ART Solar s chairman, Eshu Seevnarayan. Dr Lange is a regular contributor to scientific and technical magazines and has presented numerous lectures at conferences. Enquiries: (031)

contractors corner C3 Personality of the Month Addicted to the 'rush' of the LED revolution Sven Rotgers. DUTCH-born Sven Rotgers, general manager sales at GE Lighting, has been with the company for almost five years. He is passionate about LED lighting solutions and believes, aside from the fact that LEDs are a clean and green, that they also represent an investment in the future. There are no half-measures for Sven either at work or at play. Whatever the challenge, he gives it his best shot the first time whether it is making a life-changing move to a new country or inspiring his team at GE Lighting to make a difference. Sparks: Where were you educated? SR: I was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands where I grew up and went to school. I then studied International Business and Languages in Amsterdam. During 1998 I spent some time in the US when I participated in an exchange programme focused on marketing management. Sparks: How long have you been involved in the electrical industry? SR: After graduating in 2000, I began my career in the lighting industry, thinking it would be a solid, professional basis for whatever would follow next. I ve found this industry to be quite addictive and, 13 years later, I still love it. Sparks: When and where did you start your career? SR: I started my career in the millennium year at Philips Lighting HQ in Eindhoven in a marketing role. After eight years including a successful fouryear stint in a commercial role in the UK I needed a greater challenge and to broaden my professional experience. The perfect opportunity came with a commercial role at GE, building and leading GE s specification approach in the UK, and later expanding the scope to Europe, Middle East and Africa. This also gave me experience in a business led by a US-driven culture. Eventually, I was asked to make my involvement in South Africa more permanent, and this led to my current role. Sparks: What are the greatest changes you have seen over the years? SR: I am very fortunate to be part of the revolution in the lighting industry where demand is moving away from traditional light sources towards LED systems. In a way, this is a paradigm shift from selling a product to using an 'asset approach'. I am proud to be part of the transition from functional products to a solution that benefits users and has a positive impact on our environment. Sparks: What major projects have you worked on and what is your greatest accomplishment? SR: I would say that the most visible has been the total LED conversion of all the UK outlets of the world s largest coffee company, which later became part of a global roll-out of LED solutions. GE was considered as the trusted advisor and this being during the early stages of the LED revolution catapulted this company into the spotlight as a forward-thinking, trendsetting retail giant. I am also proud to be playing a part in promoting a technology, which I believe will have a positive impact on the lives of future generations. Sparks: Who has been your inspiration or have you had a mentor who has influenced your career? SR: Early on in my career, my first boss, Ronald Dalderup was, in many ways, my complete opposite, which was a perfect counterbalance. He was an impressive personality and he taught me how to channel my energy and ambition in more productive ways to motivate a group to achieve a common goal. Sparks: What, to your mind, are the biggest challenges facing the industry at this time? SR: With technology moving forward at such a rapid pace, it s hard at the best of times for lighting users to keep up with developments, to understand what it is that makes a trusted partner, and what constitutes a reliable solution for their application. The lack of adequate standards for LEDs globally makes this even more difficult and this potentially can put companies off from investing in capitalising energy solutions. Sparks: What do you enjoy most about your job? SR: GE allows a level of personal entrepreneurship that I ve not seen anywhere else. It makes everyday activities even more exciting, adding variety and a level of freedom with professional support services to fall back on. Sparks: How do you motivate your staff? SR: GE s team is expanding rapidly and we are growing and investing in our brand in southern Africa. Making the team members realise that their contribution impacts directly on the reputation and results of GE, gives them a level of pride and stimulation and, to some degree, everyone New executive director appointed VALLY Padayachee has been appointed as Powertech s executive director for business development and marketing and, in this role, he is also a member of the Powertech Board. Padayachee holds an MSc (Eng) from the University of KwaZulu- Natal as well as an MBA through Henly Business School. He is a seasoned engineering professional with over 30 years experience in the private sector and power utility environments having worked in the petrochemical, power and energy fields both locally and internationally. Padayachee has held senior management and executive level positions at Eskom. Subsequently, at City Power Johannesburg, Padayachee held various positions and also acted as president and CEO. wants to be recognised for making a difference. Sparks: If you could do it all again, would you change anything? If so, what would that be? SR: If you watch the film The Butterfly Effect, you realise that a decision made differently in the past could have huge consequences on where you are today and that there s no such thing as a perfect decision. Therefore, I m one who looks forward rather than looking back, wondering what if Sparks: Would you advise a person leaving school to enter the electrical industry? And why? SR: Definitely. From a lighting perspective, the incandescent lamp has been around for over 120 years and the technology hardly changed. Now, with the LED revolution in full swing, I couldn t imagine a more exciting time to be in the lighting industry. Sparks: What is your advice to electrical contractors and/or electrical engineers? SR: The industry is changing rapidly and everyone is looking for a place to fit in. With the advent of so many exciting lighting technologies, never be afraid to experiment. Having a profound technical knowledge is crucial, but it works perfectly when coupled with a sharp commercial attitude; it differentiates you. It s a combination that's hard to find and it will increase your market value. Sparks: What is your favourite quote? SR: There s no such thing as worklife balance. There are work-life choices, and you make them, and they have consequences. Jack Welch. Sparks: Name three things on your bucket list things you want to do before you kick the bucket. SR: In terms of an adrenaline rush, Vally Padayachee. His most recent position was as CEO of PDNA Resources and Energy, a major SA consulting engineering company. Enquiries: (011) I have already ticked off skydiving. That leaves diving with Great White sharks; seeing the Big Five at one of South Africa s national parks; and visiting Australia.

C4 contractors corner Mark Palmer, Gauteng Electrical Inspection Authority The right way is the only way AT the risk of sounding pedantic, I must caution electrical contractors and Registered Persons that, to comply with legislation, they may only use the Certificate of Compliance (CoC) as published in the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009 and the Test Report as published in SANS (see 8.8). This is the legislated format and I emphasise legislated because if a document, which is prescribed by legislation, is in any other format, it is illegal. I believe that all electrical contractors and, in particular, Registered Persons, are obliged to ensure that they are familiar with the prescribed legislation. So, what does the law say and where do we start? The Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 consists of 50 sections, as well as various other regulations, which place certain responsibilities on both the employers and users. In particular, the Electrical Installation Regulations place a great responsibility on Registered Persons who issue these documents on behalf of users, who are required to have valid CoCs. Electrical Installation Regulation 7 Sub-regulation 1: Subject to the provisions of subregulation (3), every user or lessor of an electrical installation, as the case may be, shall have a valid Certificate of Compliance for that installation in the form of Annexure 1, which shall be accompanied by a test report in the format approved by the chief inspector, in respect of every such electrical installation. I have heard Registered Persons saying that they believe that the Test Report referred to must contain at least the information as approved by the Chief Inspector. However, it is clear from the Regulation detailed above, that this is not the case and that the Test Report must be in the format approved by the chief inspector, This begs the question: Why is this format so important? The answer is quite simple. In a country where standardisation is paramount in order to remain within global norms, much of our safety legislation incorporates safety standards. Such a standard is the SANS Wiring Code, which is incorporated into the above-mentioned Regulations and is legally enforceable. As prescribed by the Regulations, therefore, it is clear that the Certificate of Compliance is, in fact, in two parts: The legislative Certificate of Compliance document in the form of Annexure 1 (and standardised in format in the Regulations); and an attached Test Report, as standardised by SANS (an incorporated standard). SANS Ed 1.8 Introduction: The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 (Act No. 85 of 1993) (OHS Act), which is administered by the Chief Inspector of Occupational Health and Safety at the Department of Labour, requires that electrical installations comply with the requirements of SANS It also requires that a Registered Person, as defined (master installation electrician, installation electrician or electrical tester for single phase), will issue a Certificate of Compliance together with a Test Report. The certificate shall be in the form of the Certificate of Compliance published in the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009, and the Test Report shall be in the form of the Test Report in this part of SANS (see 8.8). While, to many, the definition of a Standard may be obvious, it becomes prudent for me to define a standard as found within the scope of the SABS, and the importance of standardisation. Put at its simplest, a standard is an agreed, repeatable way of doing something. It is a published document that contains a technical specification or other precise criteria designed to be used consistently as a rule, guideline, or definition. In order to achieve the desired standardisation whereby users can consistently obtain a document that is identifiable, the precise criteria contained in the Test Report must be repeated to ensure the process. The SANS Technical Workgroup is of such a nature, however, that it is understandable that the standardised Test Report may not always contain sufficient criteria for a Registered Person to clearly identify the installation or the portion of an installation that is being tested, inspected and verified. To this end, the changes contained in the Amendment 8 version of the Test Report allows for additional information to be added to the approved Test Report by virtue of additional pages. These pages may contain any additional comments, specifications and/or drawings to clarify the technical merits of an installation to suit the Registered Person. However, no license has been given to any person to change the legislated format of this standardised document, which would be detrimental to the recipients of such documents. I therefore caution all Registered Persons to ensure that they only use Test Reports and Certificates of Compliance as prescribed by legislation. Please take the time to view the legislated format of the CoC and Test Report on my website:

C6 contractors corner Working knowledge by Terry McKenzie-Hoy Generating power into the grid AS the fact dawns on the common person that electricity can be generated as well as consumed, a eureka moment occurs when the person reasons thus: Ah If I have a wind turbine or a solar panel I can sit around and become rich by generating power into the main supply and Eskom or the municipality will pay me lots and lots of cash It sounds a great idea. Well, if it was then everybody would be doing it, wouldn t they? The fact of the matter is that, yes, you can generate electricity with either wind or solar power and feed it into the grid but it would cost a lot of money. The wind power people who are about to visually desecrate the Cape with 150m high wind turbines (think: taller than any building in Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria and only the Ponte building and the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg being taller) fall under a special agreement whereby Eskom is forced to buy power from them at an elevated price. But, unless you are going to put a 150m tower in your back garden, forget about that. Solar panels do generate power. They are also like the beach in Spain: Costa Plenty! Solar power costs about $1.50 per watt installed. An average house uses about 13kWh per day, so if you want to only generate enough power for your own needs, you will have to generate 13kWh. Since you can t do this at night when the sun has gone to bed, you will have to do it during the eight or so hours of daylight so your solar panel will have to be at least 1,8kW. Unfortunately, batteries are only about 60% efficient so the power has to go up to 2,7kW. But then you would have to supply the load while charging the battery so... You need 3kW of solar cells and batteries and stuff. Allowing for the wiring and all the other bits and pieces, you would have to pay out about R to take a medium-sized home off the grid. Your income will be R2 per kwh or about R780 per month, so the payback will take about nine years. Or not as the price of electricity escalates, you could achieve payback within four years but every year after that, until the whole installation wears out, you will be getting about R1 000 per month, escalating by about 7% per year. It s not quite wonderful yet. But it s a great deal more wonderful than it was in past years when the payback period was about 12 years and more. Now, neither Eskom nor the municipalities are going to let you put energy back into the grid, or at least not yet. The best you can do is to put in an installation that generates all the power that you consume and does it in parallel with the grid so that you have a source of supply should you have a sudden demand. I doubt that many reading this column would know how to run a battery and inverter in parallel with the grid (not because you re stupid but rather because it s quite uncommon). However it s really quite simple and many grid tied inverters are available on the market. There are things to watch out for: most importantly, the supply to the inverters from the mains should be well protected. Call me old fashioned but I think that high rupturing capacity (HRC) fuses are the best for this. They are cheap, easy to replace and keep the fault currents low so that, in the event of a misconnection, there is a quiet plink rather than a huge bang accompanied by that burning smell. I am sure we are standing on the crest of a wave and, at some point in the future, when the cost of grid electricity is high and the recovery cost from solar generation is so good, that there could be a big upsurge in the installation of solar generation systems for homes and offices. I believe all electrical contractors should get up to speed on these systems because, as with most markets, the first people there will have a head start. And, importantly, don t forget that a Certificate of Compliance is still required for grid-connected solar generation systems. Go for it. 8 C8 contractors corner Training and development by Nick du Plessis Quality coaching for quality results AS training providers, we send learners out to the workplace to gain work experience and this has been a generally accepted practice for many decades. Usually, a learner is sent to a workplace and placed under the guidance of a responsible person a mentor or coach who has the necessary experience and knowledge, gained over many years. This mentor accepts the duty of transferring knowledge and skills to the young learner who, in turn, understands that they will shadow this older person in that chosen career field. If we read the good old books, we often find that a father would, in turn, teach his son to do the work that his father had taught him to do and this is how crafts were learned and skills passed on from one generation to the next. Things have not changed much from those times except that the younger generation is now paid to learn from the older, experienced generation but it does seem to me that some pupils lack dedication and it is as if they are neither motivated to learn, nor is learning a skill their primary concern. I have found that there are many other issues that have influenced the transferring of skills from one generation to the next: race, religion, age, gender, to name but a few. However, I do believe that one of the most important factors is that the mentor or coach who is expected to transfer skills and knowledge is also under tremendous pressure to complete their own workload, often with no appreciation or back up support in the workplace. With that in mind, I have come up with some pointers to ease the pain that comes with the transfer of skills and knowledge in the workplace. I will call the person who has the skills and knowledge the coach or the mentor. The person who is learning will be referred to as the learner. It is important to note that before any skill can be transferred, it is a given that the learner must be willing and able to acquire the new skill and the coach has to be willing to transfer his or her skills and knowledge to the learner. If this is not clarified up front, no learning can take place. Step 1: Plan the coaching session The mentor needs to think about the coaching session with the learner: Is it a new skill that the learner will be acquiring or will it involve the evaluation and/or scrutiny of a skill that the learner has already learned from the coach? Step 2: Review the coaching plan When reviewing the coaching plan, consider the best way to transfer the skills and knowledge and then ask yourself the following: Will I be able to explain the task in an appropriate language while demonstrating it? Have I allowed sufficient time to match the learner s aptitude? Have I ensured compliance to health and safety regulations? Have I planned the session in a logical sequence? Do I have supplementary information that will help to reinforce the lesson? Can I explain the task so that the learner can see it in relation to the broader context? Step 3: Conduct the coaching session, allowing for demonstration and practice Keep in mind that you are experienced and have probably done the task a hundred times or more before and that the learner needs extra time and guidance to master the skill. It is important to remember that if you are under pressure to complete a task then it is probably not a good time to coach a learner because coaching takes time and patience. Step 4: Provide feedback to the learner At the end of the session, give the learner feedback on their performance, giving the positives as well as the negatives ; and, if the learner does well, be sure to tell him or her. Positive reinforcement is a great teacher in itself. Step 5: Conduct a self-evaluation Review your own coaching performance and see where you could have improved your coaching. Step 6: Allow for a learner feedback This step is probably one that is most neglected because we do not want negative feedback but do ask the learner about their coaching session. Their response will probably give you a warm, fuzzy feeling when you discover that your learner does actually want to learn from you and is indeed grateful. Step 7: Review learner s feedback Put aside some time after the coaching session to sit back and go over what the learner has said during the feedback session; this will give you an indication of their level of understanding and this will be most helpful as guidance for preparing your approach when next transferring skills to that learner. Step 8: Review the coaching session An honest appraisal is necessary here: Did you meet the learner s expectations? What would you change next time that would help the learner and reduce any frustrations that either of you may have experienced? Coaching a young person to follow in your footsteps can be a most rewarding experience. Remember you are only as good as your teacher. If you were fortunate to have had a good teacher, pay it forward by now being a good teacher to a young learner. If you believe you have been assigned a learner who is useless ask yourself if this could be changed by your approach to coaching? I believe it can.

C10 contractors corner Getting to grips with SANS by Hannes Baard Starting over again at the beginning HOW many times have you thought: This is it yep, it is all over it s finished (a task, project, holiday, experience or whatever) and I ll never experience this again this is the end only to realise that you didn t actually start at the beginning at all and there is still so much more to explore and discover? Take my columns, for instance. They started at the beginning with SANS , page one, and, after a few years of writing and explanations, they finally came to an end with the publication of the July 2013 issue of Sparks Electrical News. You see, my goal right from the start was for various reasons not to carry on much past Clause 3 the definitions. So, I thought about this and began to reminisce even considering that I could have done it better, somehow but I said to myself: Nou ja, what s done is done! But, then dear friends and neighbours, I realised that this was not actually the end because I had not started at the beginning but rather somewhere in the middle perhaps even somewhere towards the end! In fact, when I embarked on the clauses and definitions of SANS , it was really nowhere near the beginning! You see I had jumped in at the deep end (so to speak) and skipped over the mother of all standards in terms of our electrical lives: the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and even bypassed the Electrical Installation Regulations of Electrical Installation Regulations? some of you may well now ask. But I thought that we had been busy with the regulations for the past few years? You would be wrong, unfortunately. We were busy exploring and considering a code of practice the result of that mother of all standards, the OHS Act. So, here we are then, right back at the beginning and perhaps it is a good time to put a few things into proper perspective Why do we have standards then? Well, to work to a standard just makes life that much easier. The OHS Act, national and international standards are there so that we have a yardstick whereby we can gauge whether or not two similar installations or pieces of equipment are in fact the same or if they differ so much that one of them does not comply and has to be rectified, discarded and/or replaced with the other one. Consider this: If you, as an employer (or manager, foreman or whatever), have to send someone out to do a job, you would need to know that the guys you send out to different jobs would have some kind of standard to work to so that you could assess the jobs afterwards. Or, if you, as an artisan, have to go and do a job without any detailed instructions from the boss, who expects you to do the job properly and technically correct when it is compared to another job by a total stranger in a different part of the country... To be able to do this, we need some kind of standard or framework to work to and this is where the OHS Act and SANS come in. Following is a rough timeline from the beginning of our South African standards to illustrate how things evolved over the years: In 1941, Act 22 of 1941 (Machinery and Occupational Safety Act also known as the Factories Act) was published. Then, in 1946, the first edition of the Standard Regulations for the Wiring of Premises by the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers the red book was published. In the early 1970s, the blue book and Eskom s regulations (supply authority regulations) were adopted as the standard to which electrical installations should comply. Regulation 226S in March 1974 addressed earth leakage units/protection for the first time and, from 1978 to the early 1980s, SABS 0142 was compiled and finally published as a Code of Practice with a set of installation rules that formed the basis for all new electrical installations except for mining operations. It was only many years later that surface operations on mines would be incorporated as part of the standard electrical installations. Even today, the electrical installations that form part of mining operations (open cast or underground) is excluded. Act 6 of 1983 (MOS Act) was the last of the so-called Factories Acts and, in 1993, the new Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993, as we know it today) and its regulations were published. During the early part of the 2000s, SABS 0142 (the old green book ) was replaced by SANS and was also no longer referred to as a Code of Practice or Installation Rules but as a Standard. Although many people still regard it as a set of installation rules, which is not necessarily wrong. Nonetheless, it is now referred to as a National Standard. SANS now comprises two parts: SANS (Part 1: Low-voltage installations) is intended for single and three-phase electrical installations up to 1 000V normally found in residential, commercial and industrial installations. SANS (Part 2: Medium-voltage installations above 1kV ac not exceeding 22kV ac and up to and including kw installed capacity) is mainly applied in electrical reticulation and distribution systems. From next month, we will look at this structure in more detail and follow this standards trail from beginning to end.

contractors cornerc11 Range of elite switches and sockets launched FOLLOWING the successful launch in July 2009 of the Cobalt range of switches and sockets, Riken SA has announced the introduction of the new Elite range of switch and socket modules. The range includes one-way, two-way, intermediate, bell-push, double pole, and indicator switches to meet virtually any requirement. All the switches have fluorescent strips, which make it easy to locate the switches in the dark. The socket range offers a large variety of combinations and can be interchanged at any time, says Hartley Greger, managing member at Riken. He adds that the flexibility and versatility of the range means that both time and money are saved. Apart from the switches and sockets there is also a range of dimmer switches, isolators, shaving plugs, under-floor heating controllers and surfacemounting extension boxes available, says Greger, adding, and this means less stock holding and greater flexibility for the wholesaler and ease of planning for the installer. The full range of products can be viewed at Enquiries: (012) Quality circuit breakers now available MAJOR Tech has recently launched an extensive range of IEC/SANS certified and NRCS approved circuit breakers to complement the current range of switches, sockets and enclosures. The circuit breakers are branded Major Tech and have been tested according to IEC in conjunction with SANS556-1 and VC8036 to ensure the exceptional quality expected and delivered by Major Tech. Rhodam Evans. Veti divisional manager, says, Circuit breakers are automatically operated electrical switches that have been designed to protect electrical circuits from damage due to overload or short circuit. The basic function of the circuit breaker is to identify a fault and then interrupt the flow of current. All circuit breakers have common features in how they work, but specifications vary substantially depending on the voltage class, current rating and type of circuit breaker, he explains. Major Tech s range of circuit breakers is DIN rail mounted and classified as low voltage thermal magnetic. Thermal magnetic circuit breakers contain two different switching mechanisms a bi-metallic strip (thermal) and a solenoid (electromagnet). The bi-metallic strip serves as a means of handling overcurrent and the magnetic portion of the circuit breaker is to handle short circuits, says Evans. The International Standard, IEC , defines the rated current of a circuit breaker as the maximum current that the circuit breaker is designed to carry continuously (at an ambient air temperature of 30 C). The most common values for the rated current of low voltage circuit breakers are 6A, 10A, 16A, 20A, 25A, 32A, 40A, 50A and 63A, which are all available in the Major Tech range. Evans says that circuit breakers also vary according to instantaneous tripping current, which is the minimum value of current that causes the circuit breaker to trip without intentional time delay in less than 100ms and is illustrated by different curves. Major Tech currently offers a C-curve circuit breaker, which indicates that the circuit breaker trips instantaneously above 5 In and up to and including 10 In. He says that the final important safety aspect is the fault current rating (ka rating) of the circuit breaker. The value of the ka rating determines the maximum amount of current (rupture capacity) a circuit breaker can handle under fault conditions. For example, a value of 6kA means that the circuit breaker can withstand 6 000A of current during the brief time it takes to trip, explains Evans, adding, Major Tech offers both a 3kA and 6kA offer to cover most applications downstream from the main circuit breaker but the appropriate ka rating must be calculated through cascade tables. 12 C12 Energy efficiency $25-million order placed for largest single-axis PV power plant ABB,has won an order worth around $25-m to supply electrical and control systems for a new 75MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant in the Northern Cape. Owned by WBHO, a leading South African construction company, and Building Energy, an Italian renewable energy developer and operator, the plant is located in the Kalahari Desert close to the town of Kathu and to Sishen, one of the largest open-pit iron ore mines in the world. The Kathu PV power plant is among the first tranche of projects to be awarded as part of South Africa s renewable energy program, which aims to diversify the country s energy mix and reduce its carbon footprint. Once completed in 2014, it is expected to be one of the world s largest PV power plants with a single-axis tracking system. It will have the capacity to generate around 146GWh of clean solar power to feed into the national grid enough to meet the needs of over people based on average national per capita consumption and displacing the equivalent of about tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Renewable energy sources such as solar have a key role to play in meeting the growing demand for electricity while minimising environmental impact, said Brice Koch, head of ABB s Power Systems division. We have a strong track record in delivering turnkey power and automation solutions that are optimizing photovoltaic power plants all over the world. ABB s turnkey electrical and automation solution will optimise the performance of the Kathu plant to maximise output while ensuring reliability in remote and demanding operating conditions. The solution includes a range of ABB power products such as medium- and low-voltage switchgear, distribution transformers, and control and protection devices. It also incorporates distributed automation and control products from the Symphony Plus family. ABB will be responsible for the design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the project. Key features of the ABB solution include the integration of the plant s electrical equipment and high-voltage substation with the company s proprietary Symphony Plus Distributed Control System (DCS) solution in conformance with the IEC open-communication standard for substation automation. ABB will also supply an advanced tracking system with a back-tracking algorithm that optimises tracker movement and eliminates shadow on the panels. The solution also features a data-collection system that collects operational input from the trackers, inverters, string boxes and substation to enable remote operation and maintenance, thereby alleviating the need for onsite manning. Enquiries: (010) Protection from arcing faults THE DEHNarc arcing fault protection system has been developed by DEHN to protect persons against the effects related to an arcing fault during live working on electrical installations. The arcing fault protection system detects an arcing fault and causes a three-phase short-circuit which makes the current flow from the arcing fault to the three-phase KSP short-circuiting cartridge This considerably reduces the effects of the arcing fault with regard to the thermal exposure energy, electromagnetic radiation, pressure and acoustic wave and occurrence of hot, toxic gases and metal vapours. The DEHNarc arcing fault protection system in combination with the installer s personal protective equipment for working under live conditions ensures efficient protection against arcing faults. The efficiency of the protection system depends on the limitation of the incident energy of the arc. The extremely short disconnection times of the DEHNarc protection system significantly reduce the fatal consequences of an arc fault. To this end, it is essential that the arc fault current is quickly conducted to a short-circuited parallel branch, the so-called short-circuiter. The effective interaction between the arc detection system and short-circuiter ensures that the arc fault is extinguished after some milliseconds before the overcurrent protective device is tripped. The arc duration is significantly reduced, thus considerably reducing the arc energy. As a result, persons are protected from the effects of an arc fault and the availability of the installation is increased (IEC ). DEHN is represented locally by Surgetek. Enquiries: (011)

Energy efficiency C13 Solar power gains momentum LOCAL interest in photovoltaic (PV) technology has heightened since the launch in 2011 of South Africa s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP). Through this initiative, the government aims to procure and install 1,45GW of PV capacity by the end of The first South African owned solar PV module manufacturer, ART Solar, has recently been established and is well-positioned to play a leading role in providing reliable and independent electricity to support the country s growing economy and to combat the affects of rising utility costs. ART Solar s KZN manufacturing plant, with the latest equipment from Swiss manufacturer Meyer Burger Swiss Solar Systems - is geared to produce about PV modules or approximately 75 MW/year. These modules can be 48, 60 or 72 cell modules, with a glass-backsheet or with a glass-glass construction. Every module manufactured at ART Solar meets the exact specifications of each customer. These requirements include the percentage of local content necessary, as well as aesthetic needs. With the investment in solar PV modules, users are able to generate electricity and benefit from cost savings in the long term. An advantage for the local market is that funding for renewable energy projects is available. South Africa will also benefit from noting the faults and successes of solar power projects implemented around the world, says Mark Walsh, managing director, ART Solar. PV technology is a reliable and proven source of electricity because of its environmentally friendly and cost efficient features. The sun is the only resource needed to power PV panels and the silicon used in the manufacture of PV cells is an abundant and nontoxic material. PV modules produce no noise, no harmful emissions and no polluting gases. These modules can be recycled, which means materials used during manufacture are re-used. Other important features include easy installation and low maintenance requirements. ART Solar offers a 25 year guarantee for its modules, which have an estimated 40 year service life. All modules are manufactured according to stringent quality, environmental and safety specifications. The company s commitment to meeting the exact requirements The first South African owned solar PV module manufacturer, ART Solar, has recently been established. 16 M16 Motor control centres and motor protection R130-m Eskom power plants MV motors replacement contract awarded Mpho Motloung, a contracts engineer for ACTOM Electrical Machines, checks over some of the motors produced for Eskom s power stations. INTENSE competition for a major contract by Eskom for the manufacture and supply of medium voltage motors to replace most of the aging units operating in its coal-fired power plants was aroused globally when the utility invited tenders for the contract in mid The contract, dubbed the Motor Upgrade Programme (MUP), is worth R130-million and encompasses design, manufacture and supply of a total of 125 motors for 10 of Eskom s coal-fired power stations, namely Arnot, Komati, Camden, Hendrina, Kriel, Matla, Duvha, Lethabo, Grootvlei and Kendal. The company commenced deliveries of the new motors in November last year and is scheduled to complete them in mid The motors, consisting of a mix of ACTOM Electrical Machines well-known UNIBOX and MS4 series customised units, range in power from 200kW to 10MW and are for use in a wide variety of applications that include ID fans, FD fans, PA fans, mills, conveyors, boiler feeds and cooling water pumps. Tony Teixeira, ACTOM Electrical Machines general manager, says an important factor forming part of the technical qualifications that counted in the company s favour in being awarded the contract was the great care that was taken by its engineering team in ensuring complete mechanical interchangeability between the new and the old motors. This is a key requirement of the contract, for which we, as the supplier, carry the responsibility. It involved a lot of painstaking and time-consuming work visiting all the sites to confirm that our dimensions and other parameters for the existing motors were correct to ensure that the new ones would be fully interchangeable with them, he explains. We also had the advantage of having produced and supplied the majority of the original motors in conjunction with our international technology partners at the time, so we were already familiar with their performance and load characteristics. Enquiries: (011) Optimising plant production and operation IN order to keep a plant running optimally, New- Elec s MA motor protection and control relay, when connected to a PLC, can provide real-time diagnostics of problem conditions by means of alarm flags so that steps can be taken to avoid downtime. The motor s abnormal operating conditions or faults can be detected at an early stage to minimise shut-downs by initiating preventive measures prior to tripping. The MA relay also provides an economical framework for upgrading older plants to full automation due to the fact that its digital inputs can accommodate voltages from V ac or dc. A comprehensive range of protection features are included in the MA relay such as three independent over-temperature inputs to protect bearings, five digital inputs and two programmable outputs, all at a competitive price. Additional protection includes integrated earth leakage with harmonic filtering, earth leakage core balance CT and current sensing CTs up to 250A. Optional auto-restarting on load loss tripping is possible, as well as automatic co-ordination of associated trip functions for highenergy fault interruptions. The MA offers real time and date stamping recorded by the relay for the last four trips, a recording utility of actual RMS loads, thermal conditioning, mains phase voltage, line voltage, as well as status of digital inputs and output contacts. The user has the possibility of expanding the unit for fieldbus communications via Profibus DP, Modbus RTU and Canbus protocols. Enquiries: (012)

New generation of digital time switches LEGRAND, specialists in electrical products and systems, has extended its range of time switches, with the launch of a new generation of digital time switches for industrial, commercial and domestic environments. This new generation of digital time switches is designed for precise automation in various applications, including heating and cooling control, says Luk Ivens, general manager, Legrand SA. For example, digital time switches are ideal for controlling air conditioning systems and are also designed to work with thermostats, pressure switches or humidity sensors. These energy efficient time switches are user-friendly, reliable and easy to programme and read even for a non-technical person. The functional programming facility ensures optimum safety, performance and reliability, as well as enhanced aesthetics. The programmable time switches, with digital display, switch an electric circuit for lighting or heating on or off at selected times during a pre-programmed time period. Important features of these new environmentally-friendly time switches are a changeable battery and special adaptation for energy saving lamps. Once the date and time have been set, no adjustment is necessary. The new design and graphics on the display of these units offer improved visibility. A terminal block with high torque enhances safety of the system. Legrand s digital DIN rail mounting time switches with multiple functions and programmes for precise control and optimum flexibility have a unique double display, showing at a glance, the on and off actions, as well as the corresponding days. Additional features include a manual or automatic override on/off facility, as well as a running reserve of six years. This flexible range encompasses time switches with a daily or weekly programme for standard or multiple functions, as well as special function time switches with expanded offset programming for astronomical functions. There are also time switches with an annual programme for multiple functions. Standard units, with a daily or weekly programme, have a clock with a six-year working reserve and a precision of 1 second a day. These time switches have an automatic summer/ winter changeover and are compatible with alternative energy systems, including photovoltaic panels. Time switches for multiple functions have a daily or weekly programme facility, in 15 languages. This programme consists of an on and off time facility, with assignment to certain days. There is also the option to suspend the programme for a specific period, with the instruction to start up again on a certain date. The minimum programme setting for this series is one second, with a high precision clock of approximately 0,1 second per day. This range is particularly well suited to irregular cycles in security and industrial installations. Digital time switches with multi functions and an annual programme have a high precision clock of about 0,2 seconds per day. These flexible units offer about 28 programmes per channel for weekly, annual, astronomical and exceptional programmes. Only one data key is necessary to create, save, transfer and store programme settings made directly on these new multifunction and multiprogramme time switches. 18 M18 Motor control centres and motor protection Intelligent motor control evolves to the next level IN large industrial and chemical plants that often contain large numbers of motors to provide the necessary motion, any unplanned or sudden motor stops can lead to faults in the process sequence, which can be very costly. For this reason, reliable management and protection of these motors is of vital importance for ensuring a controlled production sequence. Some current motor feeders are often built up discretely, using for example, thermal motor protection based on a bimetal relay. In such a system implementing protection and control functionality is cumbersome and complex; motor control and interlocking functions must be programmed in the process controller, and control and feedback signals are exchanged via input and output modules that must be designed and wired. Additional protective functions such as motor winding temperature monitoring via a thermistor require additional devices and wiring. These and many other functions are integrated in a single device, the intelligent universal motor controller UMC100 from ABB. Sometimes referred to as an intelligent motor management module, the UMC100 offers motor control, motor protection, fieldbus communication with the control system and diagnostic functions. Compared to conventional motor feeders, motor controllers offer many advantages throughout the entire lifecycle of an industrial plant. Changing global markets is one reason many companies are being forced to reduce their operating and production costs while increasing output and quality. Energy efficiency is another factor that manufacturers in particular are interested in improving. In fact, there is now an increasing demand for more modular, flexible and integrated solutions. This, in turn, is causing many providers to look at their portfolios and find ways of enhancing their product offerings in response to this demand. Integrated solutions are fast becoming more commonplace, in part because technological advances are making integration easier, additionally these solutions function more effectively as a whole, rather than the sum of the individual elements that comprise it. 19 M Motor control centres and motor protection 19 Powering up at CT s Silo 1 building ZEST WEG Group s Genset Division is supplying a custom-engineered genset solution to the Silo 1 building project in Cape Town. The hybrid modern-meets-historic building comprises nine storeys, three of which are basement levels. In what is set to become a Cape Town landmark when completed, the Silo 1 structure will provide m 2 of office space, 300m 2 of retail space and 3 500m 2 of residential space divided into 31 apartments. A six storey central atrium completes the picture. The contract was awarded to Zest WEG Group s Genset Division based on the company s submission of a commercial and technical solution. The company is responsible for the design, assembly, installation and commissioning of the gensets. The engines are Tier 3 emissioncompliant, which is currently the highest level for production engines. Because it was necessary to provide sound attenuation to a residential level, the design and engineering required the inclusion of special inlet and outlet air attenuator splitter assemblies. The exhaust systems are designed and manufactured in-house to ensure that the exhaust breakout noise is within the limitations of the local bylaws, says Bruce McCracken, from Zest WEG Group s Genset Division s Cape Town offices. McCracken points out that the company will provide three 350kVA and two 500kVA generator sets. These units operate in parallel as the load demand dictates. In addition, we will supply one 500kVA genset as a standalone unit for emergency backup for the residential complex situated on the existing Silo site which is within the greater waterfront precinct. The contract was awarded in June 2012 and the gensets arrived on site in the second week of May The building work is still in progress and we anticipate that all functionality testing will be conducted in July 2013, says McCracken. As with any project we undertake, we enforce quality standards based on our in-house programme of excellence. This is carried out from the installation through to commissioning, to ensure continuity in quality, McCracken concludes. Equipped with two volt-free safety relay outputs, the DA101S has a slim 25mm housing and features a solid-state PNP feedback output as well as LED status indicators for the inputs and outputs. Two overlapping input signals are compared and evaluated, ideally from inductive sensors. These take their power directly from the zero-speed relay. As true zero motion is difficult or impossible to verify, the DA101S is in fact set by the user to detect a low frequency, and switch when the detected pulse rate drops below the pre-set value. This will vary according to the pick-up arrangement and machine constraints, so one of four frequencies (0.2, 0.5, 1 and 2Hz) can be selected using a hard-wired link. This link cannot be changed during operation without the unit switching into the safe state. The DA101S is designed for panel-mounting on a DIN rail, and requires a 24V dc supply. 20 M20 Motor control centres and motor protection Protection relay with advanced control features THE NewCode relay from NewElec is an ISO 9001:2000 compliant, locally designed and manufactured threephase motor protection and control relay with seven inputs with differential voltages 24 to 220V ac or dc and four fully programmable output contacts as standard. The design of this product accentuates the need for user friendly operation in that it has advanced LED indications for I/Os, fault indication, relay address, infrared data communications and the ever ready settings memory detachable module for easy relay replacement and paramatisation. The micro-controller based precision instrument offers advanced protection and control features with starter logic functions. The relay is designed to cater for the low voltage motor protection market and is available in different current models. The current transformers, including the core balance current transformers are external. The relay is fully configurable with the aid of front-end software or a man machine interface unit (MMI). Event records can also be downloaded with the aid of the MMI onto a memory stick for further analysis. All the settings are password protected. The relay has an onboard database where time and date stamped records are kept. Two types of records are kept, namely fault records (40 last faults) and event records (1 660 events). In the case of event records, the user has limited access rights (read only). The front-end has a data recorder and a spectrum analyser which could be used to analyse motor performance and supplied power quality respectively. The spectrum analyser can detect harmonics up to the 9th harmonic on any of the three phase currents. NewCode detects earth leakage currents with the aid of the external core balance current transformer and is configurable to operate in inverse definite minimum time (IDMT) or instantaneous definite time (IDT) mode. A unique feature is added to the relay in the form of simulation. This function could be used for personnel training or relay functionality testing. 22 L22 lighting Ringing in the new Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of Osram Licht AG, rings the traditional stock exchange bell to mark the opening of trading in Osram stocks on the Frankfurt trading floor. OSRAM Licht AG started trading on the Frankfurt and Munich stock exchanges under the ticker symbol, OSR, on July 8. Today s listing marks the beginning of a new chapter in the company s more than 100 year history and represents great opportunities for the company s future development, says Osram s CEO, Wolfgang Dehen. Osram, as an integrated lighting expert, is clearly the number two player in the lighting market and positioned throughout the value chain from LED chips, lamps, lights and light management systems to lighting solutions and the service business. The company generates more than 70% of its revenue from energy efficient products in its certified environmental portfolio, says Dehen, adding that LED-based products already account for more than 25% of overall revenue, which amounted to billion in the first half of the current fiscal year Enquiries: (011) Advantages of LED lighting PHILIPS, a global leader in LED lighting, understands the importance of making the best lighting decisions. With energy tariffs rising, it is important to pay more attention to energy efficient lighting to reduce energy consumption and bring household expenses down. With various brands in LED lighting market, it is essential for home owners to understand the impact that high quality LED lighting can have on their electricity bill, as well as their quality of life. Good LED lighting looks great and lasts much longer than other older lighting technologies. Advantages of LEDs Five times more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent light bulbs. Much longer life than incandescent and even other energy saver bulbs. Mercury-free and safe for the environment. Can be used for easily controlled directional light. Can be used in a huge variety of indoor and outdoor applications. Cool to the touch, so low temperature reduces overall room heat. It really is time to consider investing in LED lighting but choose carefully to avoid any disappointment. Be wary of low quality LED lamps as these may affect the overall effect of your lighting. Good versus bad LEDs Colour consistency: It is aesthetically important that lamps in the same area are the same shade of cool or warm light. All good quality LED lamps are carefully checked for colour consistency. Optical direction and spread: A good LED directs and spreads light throughout a room. Thermal management: Ensure there is no excess heat from your LED lamp. Reputation: Look for a quality brand you know and recognise. As legislation continues to accelerate the phase-out of incandescent lamps in many parts of the world, including South Africa, LED technology is the future. During the 2013 Budget Speech an additional levy was added to the price of incandescent bulbs. Replacing 60W lamps with Philips LED lamps could save up to 80% of the energy used by older technologies. As LED lamps have lifetimes of approximately hours consumers will need to replace lamps far less frequently. Where previously a 50W tungsten halogen lamp was used the same job can be done with a 7W LED and in areas where a little less light is required it might even be practical to choose a 4W solution. Many of these LEDs will fit into existing lights as a replacement lamp but occasionally a new fitting may be required. When choosing these LEDs make sure they are properly CE marked, and that they are fully described with their lumen output (lumens are the true measure of light output), the colour temperature warm white should be no more than 3 000K, preferably 2 700K. There is no doubt that LEDs are the most exciting innovation that the lighting industry has encountered for many years; and LED lamps are standing up to the challenge of ensuring this technology to meet the aspirations and expectations of the users. 23 L lighting 23 Taking technical excellence to new heights EUROLUX is renewing its commitment to technical excellence with the acquisition of a GO-2000 Goniophotometer and Integrated Sphere. These instruments will allow Eurolux to provide lighting designers with sufficient information to plan effective lighting solutions utilising Eurolux products says Shaun Bouchier, director at Eurolux. The GO-2000 Goniophotometer (also known as a horizontal Goniophotometer) is a supermatic test system for luminous intensity distribution and total luminous flux measurement of various types of luminaires and lamps, including indoor lights, street lights and floodlights. It handles fluorescent, HID, LED and incandescent sources, producing the photo metrics for any measured luminaire, explains Bouchier. We can use this information for research, development, product performance documentation and quality assurance. For us, the biggest benefit is the detailed information we can now offer our customers, allowing them to design effective lighting solutions. There are two main components to the Goniophotometer: The rotating table that the fixture or lamp is placed on, including the arms on which the luminaire is mounted; and a light sensor that measures light output. The light source (whether in a fixture or not) is placed in the middle of the Goniophotometer, atop the rotating table, which can be adjusted to make sure the luminaire is centred. When the lamp or luminaire is positioned this way, the light reflects directly onto a light sensor at the opposite end of the room. The arm with the luminaire rotates from 0 to 360 degrees vertically, and 0 to 180 horizontally, measuring every 10 vertically or depending on the settings before testing. This measurement also depends on the symmetry of the light source and how detailed the measurements need to be. This process is repeated until we obtain a map of the entire lamp or luminaire, says Bouchier. A complete test takes anywhere from ten minutes to two hours, depending on the detail needed greater detail takes more time. The Integrated Sphere allows Eurolux to measure each specific lamp, whether it is LED, fluorescent, CFL or HID, to determine its exact Kelvin ratings, colour temperature, chromaticity coordinates, Rendering Index, flux lumens, lumen efficiency, lumen power and power factor. The main difference between the Integrating Sphere and the Goniophotometer is that the sphere only measures the total light output of a lamp and not the direction, explainss Bouchier. The lamp being tested is placed in the centre of the Integrating Sphere. At one side of the sphere is a light sensor, which measures the light output of the lamp. Between the lamp and the light meter there is a baffle to prevent the sensor from seeing any direct light from the lamp. The inside of the sphere (including the baffle) is coated with a diffuse white reflective coating that reflects all wavelengths equally. This allows us to obtain very accurate measurements. The light from the lamp bounces around the sphere until it reaches the light meter, explains Bouchier. It is important that there is nothing else in the sphere besides the lamp and the baffle. Anything else placed in the sphere, such as a fixture, would absorb some of the light. He continues: So, if anything besides the lamp and baffle is placed in the sphere, not all of the light reaches the light sensor and this can result in erroneous sensor readings. This means that we can only obtain bare lamp readings in the sphere. Eurolux always aims to improve the customer experience, and we believe this is yet another way of ensuring our clients get all the information they need to make informed choices. 24 L24 lighting BEKA LEDflood. BEKA s new floodlight, the BEKA LEDflood. Innovative LED floodlight Many light distributions are available, in order to provide the right light distribution for each application. AS floodlights are often used in applications where the mounting location is not easily accessible, the cost of maintenance is one of the cost factors that have to be taken into account. Metal halide or high pressure sodium lamps were traditionally used in these luminaires and these presented some disadvantages. However, BEKA s new and innovative floodlight, the BEKA LEDflood, has overcome these shortfalls. The BEKA LEDflood features unique technical concepts that have been specially designed for Africa s environments and conditions, says Beka s Daniel Kasper. This is evident in the unique thermal sensor technique, which monitors the temperature of the LEDs on the printed circuit boards (PCBs). Once a critical temperature is reached which could harm the lifetime of the LEDs the current is reduced to a safe temperature level. This safeguards the LEDs and ensures that the long lifetime of up to hours, as envisaged by the LED manufacturer OSRAM, is achieved. BEKA provides a patented and effective lightning protection device to prevent the destruction of the power supply, drivers and LEDs as a result of electric surges, typically caused by lightning. This device is particularly suitable for exposed pole mounted applications, says Kasper. The installation process is easy, since the LED module, power supply and driver module can be removed for installation or for any future maintenance. He adds that the housing is manufactured of marine grade LM6 aluminium, which prevents corrosion even in the most corrosive environments. To maximise the reliability of the LEDs, the photometric engine is completely sealed to IP66. This ensures that the photometric performance is maintained over time. Many light distributions are available and, in order to provide the right light distribution for each application, BEKA s application department can assist in selecting the correct optical lens for this purpose, adds Kasper. NTL Lemnis Africa, the manufacturer of the Pharox Range, is currently running a promotion on specific products mainly for the hospitality industry, the retail sector, poultry farms and public lighting. For more information contact Edwinah Viljoen at info@lemnislighting.co.za Enquiries: (012) Saving energy with lighting automation THE rising cost of energy is forcing businesses and home owners to come up with ways to reduce energy consumption, says Sara Ross, corporate marketing manager at ACDC Dynamics. One of the easiest ways to accomplish energy saving is by having the lights on in different areas of your building only when you actually need them on. This is, however, difficult to accomplish in areas such as bathrooms, passages, stairwells and meeting rooms. ACDC Dynamics offers a variety of solutions that enable easy, aesthetically pleasing, automatic control of lighting in these areas, she says. Staircase timers such as our ASM-01/U or ASH-01/U are the perfect solution for long passages and stairwells. The timer is activated by a push button that can be positioned at either end of a passage or on the landings of a stairwell. When the button is pushed the lights are switched on for a time that can be adjusted according to the timeframes needed to clear the area. That way the lights are only on when required. Another solution that ACDC Dynamics provides is our range of occupancy sensors. These sensors make use of either microwave or infrared technology to sense whether an area is occupied or not and then switch the lights on or off as required. On accessing these spaces, the lights will be turned on for the length of time required and automatically switch off when the space is vacant. The advantage of microwave sensors like our JQ-25 and ECOMAT are that they are not limited by line of sight and can detect movement through objects, says Ross, adding that means that the sensor can be mounted inside a ceiling cavity or inside a light fitting, behind the diffuser. This is useful in areas where the presence of a surfacemounted sensor would detract from the décor. Microwave sensors are also very sensitive to movement and will pick up small movements. Ross explains that infrared occupancy sensors are affordable and are available in a variety of designs to meet any requirement. The range includes small ceiling mount sensors, a 4x2 sensor that will replace a normal light switch, outdoor weatherproof sensors and even a 12V dc sensor that can be used in solar lighting applications. Ross describes some of the outstanding features of these products: The OS-465 has the ability to connect two separate sensors to a common switching box for use in areas where one sensor will not cover the entire area. The OS-465 and OS-462 have the ability to switch two loads, which is especially useful in bathrooms where they can be used to switch both the lighting and the extraction fans on and off. The sensors include a daylight switching function to make sure that the lights are not switched on when the ambient light level is high enough for good visibility. Most of the range includes adjustment for the sensitivity, the time that the lights will remain on and the lux level for the daylight switching function.
