7 Hordaland County Council Responsible authority for public transport in the city of Bergen and Hordaland (Bus, Bergen Light Rail, boat, ferry) Skyss Administrative unit of Hordaland CC. responsible for planning, purchasing and marketing public transport services. Contracts for the operation of bus/boat/light rail routes are awarded to private traffic companies after tender competitions

10 Background: Hybrid Biogas Bus initiative Natural gas buses operative in Bergen from 2001 Hordaland County and HOG Energi enters partnership with BBB in 2009 New Light Rail opens in new buses purchased in 2012 Bergen City decides to build a biogas plant in 2010 Hordaland County Council decides that gas buses will run on biogas 2012 Regional authorities have a strategy to make the light rail the backbone of the transport system in Bergen, complementing with biogas buses

13 Aim Improve the energy efficiency of biogas buses Contribute to make more optimal buses available to the market and for customers with the most advanced environmental requirements Price competitive buses compared to diesel alternatives that still dominate the bus market

14 Scope To develop and demonstrate serial hybrid technology for gas buses Test and measure energy efficiency and fuel consumption Test in hard road/topographic conditions and variation in stop frequency and situation that require quick shifts in acceleration up to the regular speed Evaluate and compare to other fuels and hybrid types where data may be available Collect feedback from the public Disseminate results to partners, public and the manufacturer

24 Driver s facilities No ticketing Like the ligth rail in Bergen, there will be no ticketing on board, just validators.

25 Vehicle length and weight dispensation The Norwegian public roads administration has granted dispensation to run 24 meters buses on line 2 Skyss is also considering other routes such as center- Kronstad. Skyss will identify physical measures that must be implemented before the buses will be put into regular traffic

26 Progress plan The construction of the buses is underway in Belgium and the first bus will see the light of day in Belgium in the spring After extensive testing and training of drivers and yard personnel, it is delivered to Bergen in mid- September 2014 HOG Energy is project manager for the project and will ensure that the experience with the buses being collected and distributed to the financial contributors, Transnova, partners of the EU, and to all the others in the transport sector who are closely following this pilot project in Bergen
