8 Operation Assumptions Streetcars & Vehicular Traffic Vehicles will generally operate in mixed-traffic Vehicles will be controlled by traffic lights, signs, etc. Preemptive signaling is a possibility at major intersections Hours of Service Comparable to DC Circulator service hours Frequency of Service minute frequency Fare Structure/Collection Fares will be comparable to DC Circulator fare DDOT is evaluating several on-and off-board fare collection systems Will prioritize quick on/off by allowing for boarding at all doors Emergency Operations During emergency interruptions of electrical service, DDOT will rely on Circulator or WMATA to offer bus bridges

10 Past Present Future Streetcar project began in 2007 in coordination with H St/Benning Rd Great Streets projects 80% of the construction impacting the roadway has been completed The 2.2 mile segment connects Union Station, Benning Rd and Oklahoma Ave Phase 1 Acquisition of three (3) modern streetcar vehicles Installed tracks, duct work, stop platforms, shelters and pole foundations Completed in June 2011 Phase 2 will include: Overhead Catenary System (OCS) along the entire corridor A Car Barn and Training Center (CBTC) on eastern end Power Substations located east, west and midline Interim Western Destination serving Union Station Turnarounds on the eastern and western ends Vehicle testing, training and start-up Construction scheduled to begin Spring 2012 with service in Summer 2013
11 Design-Build Project Delivery Design-Build is a project delivery method in which project design and construction are completed by a single contractor, known as the design-builder DDOT is using this method to deliver the project to minimize risks and save time Timeline of Phase 2 Design-Build: Fall 2010: DDOT published a Request for Qualifications and selected prequalified teams Fall 2011: Prequalified Design-Build Teams submitted proposals Fall 2011: Anticipated Notice to Proceed on design Spring 2012: Anticipated Notice to Proceed for construction Spring 2013: Substantial completion of construction on H St/Benning Rd Summer 2013: Passenger service begins on H St/Benning Rd
12 Overhead Catenary System Cantilever The catenary system that will be utilized primarily throughout the system Span Wire The catenary system that will be utilized for achieving our turn radius
13 Substations East-Mid-West East End: Adjacent to 26 th and Benning Road NE Mid-line: within the District ROW near 12 th and H Street NE West End: H Street NE between 2 nd and 3 rd Streets NE West End within the abutment East End within the CBTC Mid-Line South side of 12 th and H St NE

15 Car Barn Training Center (CBTC) Eastern End Overview Car Barn at eastern end will serve as the Operations and Maintenance Facility CBTC will include infrastructure for light vehicle maintenance and vehicle storage Facility can be expanded to accommodate future streetcar segments A temporary structure will support pre-revenue and the first several months of revenue service The permanent Car Barn Training Center will be in place by late 2013
16 Car Barn Training Center (CBTC) Eastern End Training Center DDOT anticipates working with DCPS and UDC to develop the training program An agreement on details of the training program will be established once the Operator is selected The career training provided will be for streetcar as well as other alternative modes of transportation, for example: Personal electric vehicles Light rail systems High speed rail

18 Tacoma CBTC Design Elements The CBTC will be a LEED Silver Certified structure DDOT will solicit public input for elements related to the structure such as: Architectural style Landscaping Materials Public Art Other uses Survey available at: Tampa Seattle
19 Interim Western Destination Evaluation of Alternatives Western Destination refers to the Interim connection to Union Station DDOT analyzed seven different alternatives for the Interim Western Destination The alternatives were evaluated based on the following criteria: Cost Schedule Passenger Experience Length of the ride Length of the walk between the streetcar stop and the Metrorail station Comfort and accessibility during the walk Ridership Potential Neighborhood Impact
