4 INTRODUCTION What will be the role of infrastructure in connected cars & autonomous driving? Transition timetime The full automated future is still far. We will see a long transition period where all types of vehicles coexist in different proportions Today (conventional, connected and autonomous). Tomorrow In this long period of mixed traffic the infrastructure plays a crucial role. The infrastructure needs to be digitalized to support CV/AV. The TMC needs to guarantee a secure and smooth travel for all users 4

12 InfrastructureSupport levels for Automated Driving (ISAD) Digital information provided to AVs Level Name Description Digital map with static road signs VMS, warnings, incidents, weather Microscopic traffic situation Guidance: speed, gap, lane advice A Cooperative driving Based on the real-time information on vehicle movements, the infrastructure is able to guide AVs (groups of vehicles or single vehicles) in order to optimize the overall traffic flow. Digital map data is available with static road signs. Map data could be complemented by physical reference points (landmarks signs). Traffic lights, short term road works and VMS need to be recognized by AVs. Conventional infrastructure without digital information. AVs need to recognise road geometry and road signs. 13 CONCLUSION The infrastructure will play a key role, using physical and digital elements (INFRAMIX), in the transition time while autonomous and conventional vehicles coexist. Road infrastructure can provide additional information for on-board decisions of CAVs Infrastructures will have to be adapted to guarantee the circulation of connected autonomous vehicles The roads will need to be certified in order to guarantee safety. The classification of adaptation of the infrastructure for autonomous vehicles (segmentation) will be required. The potential of ISAD in mixed traffic Investments to digitize the infrastructure are an opportunity for road operators. EU-funded research projects facilitate the incorporation of new technologies. Connected autonomous vehicles are creating new value added services for customers, which may create new business opportunities 13
