Energy: Electricity F I N A L P R O J E C T Created by: Frances Carlo EDTC Tools for Visualizing Information Fall 2017

GENERAL INFORMATION Target Audience: 4 th Grade, 9-10 years old 23 Students 5 ESL/Bilingual Students 3 Exited ESL Students Essential Questions: What is electricity? What is an electrical circuit? How do we use electricity? Purpose: The purpose of this unit is to give students opportunities to make observations so they may provide evidence that energy can be transferred, or moved from place to place, by moving objects or through sound, light, or electric currents.

STANDARDS, OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES NGSS 4-PS3-2 Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents. NGSS 4-PS3-4: Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another. Students will be able to: Describe how charged particles interact with one another. Build and analyze circuits, and explain how they work. Identify ways in which electrical energy can be transformed into heat, light, sound, and motion. Identify and explain the importance of using alternate resources to generate electric energy.

LESSON 1: ELECTRICITY Vocabulary: atoms, protons, electrons, neutrons, positive charge, negative charge, neutral charge Essential Knowledge: Atoms are made up of smaller particles called protons, electron, and neutrons. The main difference between these particles is their electric charge. Activity: Pair-share/Small Group Try It Activity 1: Electric Charges Assessment: Goggle Form: Electric Charge Lesson Time Line: 1 Day

LESSON 2: STATIC ELECTRICITY Vocabulary: electric charges, electrostatic discharge Essential Knowledge: Static electricity is the build up of charges on an object. The electric charges that have built up move, or "jump" from one object to another. This jumping is called electrostatic discharge. Activity: Try It Activity 2: Electric Charge Buildup Try It Activity 3: Electric Charge-er Balloon-Can Dragster Pull Assessment: Observation Logs Lesson Time Line: 1-2 Days

LESSON 3: ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS Vocabulary: circuit, complete circuit, open circuit, closed circuit, source, conductor, load, control Essential Knowledge: Electrical energy results from a flow of electrons. An electrical circuit is a specific path from which electricity flows. This results in transforming electrical energy into motion, light, sound or heat. Activity: Try It Activity 4: Build a Circuit Will It Light Up? Try It Activity 5: Augmented Reality (AR) Circuits Assessment: Build a Circuit Planning Sheet Lucid Chart Circuits Exit Ticket: AR Circuits Google Form Mini Quiz: Electrical Circuits Lesson Time Line: 1-2 Days

LESSON 3: ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS Activity: Try It Activity 4: Build a Circuit Will It Light Up?

LESSON 3: ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS Activity: Try It Activity 5: Augmented Reality (AR) Circuits Repair the Circuit Cards - Manipulatives Component Cards Online Version (Screenshot)

LESSON 4: GENERATING ELECTRICAL ENERGY Vocabulary: generator, natural resources, renewable resources, non-renewable resources, fossil fuel, solar, tidal Essential Knowledge: All the devices that use electricity change electrical energy into other types of energy, such as motion, light, heat and sound. Alternative sources of power (renewable resources) have become increasingly important in the production of electrical energy. Activity: Try It Activity 6: Alternative Resources for Generating Electricity (Google Map) Assessment: Generators (Google Map) Alternative Resources for Generating Electricity Graphic Organizer Exit Slip (Google Form) Lesson Time Line: 3-5 Days

LESSON 4: GENERATING ELECTRICAL ENERGY Activity: Try It Activity 6: Alternative Resources for Generating Electricity (Google Map Sample)

MODIFICATIONS AND ACCOMMODATIONS Minimal whole class sessions Allow more time for hands-on activities in small group settings; with options for independent practice. All activities can be created with paper and pencil. Small-group setting Provide additional resources and assistance during group sessions Screen captioning of videos in Spanish for ELL/ESL/Bilingual students

BRAINY BITS: SAMR Substitution: From Paper to Digital Texts Use computer to access digital texts and websites to research alternative sources of power Use of Google Maps as an interactive map instead of an Atlas Use of Google Forms for assessment and exit slips Use augmented reality (AR) to build circuits Augmentation: Improvement of Tasks Use Google Drive as a repository of project notes Immediate updates when changes are made to Google Maps Submission of assignments online via sharing (single source)

BRAINY BITS: SAMR (CON T) Modification: Significant Changes to Tasks Use Chromebooks and/or desktop computers to share digital documents and maps (collaborate within the group/class) Students annotate shared online documents in real-time Redefinition: Creation of New Tasks Publish Google Map worldwide in real-time.
