3 GEISLINGER COMPOWIND The Geislinger Compowind coupling is based on 25 years of experience in developing fatigue resistant, maintenance-free and weight-saving couplings and shaft lines for marine applications. Installed between the rotor and the gearbox, the low-speed coupling is made of advanced fibre composites which enable the gearbox to be mounted rigidly onto the main frame, it respectively facilitates highly integrated next-generation drivetrain architectures. Thanks to its low and almost linear restoring forces, virtually all occurring non-torque loads are absorbed effectively by the composite membranes. Compowind protects the gear box and the whole drivetrain by significantly reducing non-torque loads and supports overcoming generator misalignment issues. Moreover, Eigen modes are significantly reduced and the dynamic behaviour is improved beyond comparison. This is particularly important under severe load conditions and after the occurrence of special events such as emergency stops (see example below). Thanks to the elasticity of the low-speed coupling the sound path from the gearbox to the rotor blades is interrupted. For this reason, the noise emission from the rotor blades is reduced effectively, which poses an additional value for onshore applications. Compowind is resistant to heat, frost, salt water and oil and offers electrical insulation as an option. The use of advanced materials and our state-of-the-art manufacturing methods give wind turbine producers a competitive lead in the race for weight, enhancement of reliability and reduction of operational cost (OPEX). Non-torque loads can significantly affect the reliability of the gearbox. It can be expected that the reduction of non-torque loads and the enhancement of the dynamic system behaviour will reduce premature gearbox failures, resulting in reduced gearbox exchange cost and increased energy production. The reduction of operational expenditure (OPEX) over the entire wind turbine life will have a positive impact on the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). A dynamic load study as well as a commercial study done by the CWD (Center for Wind Power Drives, RWTH Aachen) is available on demand. 4 FUNCTIONALITY OF THE COUPLING FURTHER GEISLINGER PRODUCTS FOR WIND POWER APPLICATIONS: Pitch moment (My) on the input shaft of the gearbox Conventional drivetrain with the gearbox elastically mounted (and hydraulic torque support in state-of-the-art drivetrains) Static and dynamic deflections transmit bending moments from the rotor to the gearbox and its components. These non-torque loads cause excessive, uneven and unpredictable loads to the drivetrain components and affect the reliability and uptime of wind turbines significantly. The elastically mounted gearbox produces Eigen modes (mainly drivetrain bending modes), resulting in an unfavourable dynamic system behaviour and increased fatigue load (see example of dynamic load study below). Geislinger Gesilco Disc Maintenance-free, electrically insulating composite coupling Geislinger Gesilco Shaft Lightweight, maintenance-free shaft solutions The Gesilco shaft lines are made of advanced composite material and are characterised by their onepiece manufacturing with an integrated fibre flange connection. The Gesilco shafts can be easily adapted to your requirements. Complete packages with steel adapters, bearings, bulkhead seals and Gesilco composite misalignment couplings are possible. Time (s) without Compowind with Compowind The Geislinger Gesilco Disc coupling is specifically designed for closed coupled generator sets. The flat membrane allows the transmission of high torsional vibratory torques and radial forces at high engine speeds. The Gesilco Disc, with its homokinetic, non-magnetic and non-conductive properties, is a maintenance free coupling solution which can even be used in rough environmental conditions. Drivetrain with Geislinger Compowind and the gearbox rigidly mounted The Geislinger Compowind is the first innovative coupling of its kind to enhance the reliability of your wind turbine s drivetrain. The coupling protects the drivetrain through a significant reduction of non-torque loads and a clear enhancement of the dynamic system behaviour. Thanks to the low restoring forces of the low-speed coupling, gearbox loads are reliably predictable independent of the wind turbine conditions (see example of dynamic load study). Geislinger Coupling Robust torsional elastic, high damping steel spring coupling The Geislinger Coupling is a torsional elastic highdamping steel spring coupling with hydrodynamic damping properties. High reliability, long intervals between overhauls, and low operating costs are some of the main features of this coupling. The Geislinger coupling is perfectly suited to all types of machinery, but in particular for diesel and gas engines.
