1 West Coast Electric Highway DC Fast Charging Network Best Practices in Fast Charging Corridors EV Roadmap 8 Portland, Oregon July 29, 2015 Tonia Buell Interim Director WSDOT Innovative Partnerships 1
2 West Coast Electric Highway Vision: DC fast chargers strategically place in intervals along the 1,350 miles of I-5, Hwy 99 from Canada to Mexico. Purpose of Project: support broad consumer adoption of EVs commercialization. Case Theory : Range anxiety is a significant factor in consumers purchasing decision. Strategy: Provide a basic network of DC Fast Chargers to help alleviate range anxiety. West Coast Electric Highway: Create and promote both the functional and emotional benefits of having a safety net of EV charging opportunities. 2

Plan for future expansion (u.lity upgrades, trenching, boring, backfill resurfacing). Install CHAdeMO and CCS dual chargers. Have overlapping EVSE coverage (EV Project). Don t place EVSE under trees (Ridgefield Rookery). Prepare for weather condi.ons (radiant- heated concrete pad, snowplow for mountain areas). Educate your elected officials, Market your services. See the Washington State EV Ac.on Plan.
15 Washington s EV Action Plan Accelerate Electric Vehicle Sales/Adoption in WA 1. Renew the Clean Car sales and use tax exemption. 2. Transform public and private fleets. 3. Conduct public education and outreach. 4. Provide more EV charging signage. 5. Explore incentives for driving electric vehicles. Strengthen Washington s EV Charging Network 6. Complete build-out of WA s fast charging network. 7. Explore funding mechanisms for EVSE installation. 8. Support workplace charging. 9. Address building codes, policy, and zoning barriers. 10. Engage utilities. 11. Support both DC fast charging standards. Synergize Actions throughout the Region 12. Participate in regional alternative fuel partnerships. 13. Track and participate in national EV efforts.
