17 Using a Buck boost converter Engine running detection The converter has a unique engine running detection in order to be able to detect a running vehicle engine. This prevents the converter from charging the starter battery if the alternator does not supply power. The converter is switched on: When the engine is running and the supply voltage is >= (adjustable) volts and any (adjustable) minute blocking is over. Pin 1 input (as an alternative to the engine running detection) The converter may also be switched on with a switch or relay contact. Switch on: The converter is switched on: If pin 1 input >= 2 volts, and the supply voltage is >= (adjustable) volts and any blocking is over.

46 Overload of inverters Normally when a Multi switches off, it stays off for 30 seconds and will then automatically restart again. These 30 seconds are fixed. So when you encounter a situation in which the off time is unequal to 30 seconds it will most likely not be a firmware issue. (most likely it will be for instance hardware which switches the device or it can be a remote panel/assistant which decides to switch off.)

47 Overload of inverters At an overload the Multi tries to restart 3 times If the Multi is switched of within 30 sec after a restart again it will will go into lock (permantent OFF ) and needs to be restarted by switching off/on If the unit runs for longer the 30sec the timer is cleared again.

48 Overload of inverters While in the off or permanent off state the LED indication is in the remember state. All errors which occur will get displayed. No indication is cleared. In other words, the error LED indication can get worse and cannot get better

49 Overload of inverters Short circuit / excessive overload protection The multi s do have a protection mechanism for the powerpack. When it discovers that the current limitation for the FET s is constantly activated it will turn off the multi permanent with an overload indication. If this multi is in a VEBus system then the whole system will turn off. In a multi phase system the leaders of the other phases will display VEBusError code 1 (float LED blinks in opposite phase with the Inverter LED) during the first 30 seconds. After that they will start indicating OK codes

55 A typical system The Multi connects to batteries. The Multi powers loads, such as lights, TVs or and/or refrigerators. These are the AC loads. The Multi can be powered by grid, generator and/or AC Solar. This is the AC input. The Multi can be powered via the batteries by DC solar, alternators and/or DC generator. This is the DC input. There also might be loads in the system that connect to the battery, like a water pump. This is the DC load.

56 System calculations Important questions: What is the total use in KWh? What battery capacity is needed? How long stand alone time? What charge current is needed? Quiet energy and/or generator?

Self consumption systems cater for the average load in a system Off-grid systems have to cater for the peak load in the system Because off grid systems have to cater for peak loads they generally speaking contain twice the inverter size and twice the battery bank size. Off grid systems containing PV have to be calculated for winter time and have to be able to potentially be able to deal with a number of days of bad weather.

66 Back up systems These are systems where grid or generator is not always available or frequently fails A battery is used to power loads when mains is not available The focus is on the battery, Ideally the battery is always full unless there is a blackout The battery should never be let to go empty, so it needs to be recharged from solar or from a backup generator If the power is restored the battery will need to be charged up as fast as possible

67 Basic Multi backup system Should the grid or generator fail the Multi will run off the batteries When the batteries get low the Multi will turn off and will stop powering he AC loads When the grid or generator is back the Multi will charge the batteries again and will power the AC loads
