As and when the old buses are scrapped the replacement will be done by adding BS-IV norm buses only.

11 BMTC Committed to Environment All Depots are equipped with upgraded and network emission testing machines BMTC in its Citizen Charter has declared Rs 1000/- award for polluting bus.

12 Environmental Initiatives by BMTC 1. Aforestation:- Massive afforestation programme was implemented. 2. Smoke Emission Checks:- BMTC has launched a programme of routine smoke emission checks covering the entire fleet at regular intervals. Thelimitofsmokelevelsforheavydutydieselvehiclesbeing50HSU. 3. Rain water Harvesting:- Rain water harvesting / Water Recycling has beenimplementedinallmostallthedepotsofdepotsofbmtc. 4. Waste Management. 5. ISO Certificate in QMS and EMS.

13 SAFE GUARDING ENVIRONMENT BMTC by being the sole public transport provider is also the largest fleet owner. It is committed to its social obligation of working for a clean and pollution free environment through adoption of latest automobile technology and bus maintenance techniques its contribution in controlling pollution in the city is significant. The following are steps initiate in this direction. a) Use of low Sulphur content HSD in its Buses. b) It has the youngest fleet in comparison to any state transport undertaking in the country. c) The engines installed in its buses conform to Euro-4 emission standards. d) Every Bus in its fleet under goes a standard emission to check each month to ensure permissible smoke levels.

14 Popularising Public Transport Bus Day is being observed to promote the Public transportation from personalized transportation. Traffic congestion reduced on the day. There has been a drop in the pollution levels on the day.

15 Bus Day 1. BMTC introduced new concept - Bus Day on 4 th of Feb 2010 to encourage more commuters to leave their private vehicles at home and use public transportation for commuting. 2. BMTC has established a tradition of celebrating Bus Day on the 4 th of every month. 3. The main objectives of the campaign is to raise awareness on public transport as a sustainable commuting choice for livable cities, weaning away private vehicle form the roads to reduce journey times and improve air quality. 4. Publicity of the bus day is done through posters on buses/important bus stands/junctions/companies along with SMS/ concept, caps and banners. Monitoring Effects of Bus Day:- 1. The result is encouraging: a. Ridership increased by 10% with revenue statistics witnessing a positive rise, hence boosting BMTC s enthusiasm to sustain this tradition. b. Vehicle Speeds increased almost by 10% on some Bus day. c. Pollution dropped by 10% on Bus Days. 2. Public Response to Bus Day has been very good in terms of both rider-ship and awareness regarding benefits of public transport.

17 Concept of TTMC CONCEPT OF TTMCs To meet some of the objectives of the National Urban Transport Policy. To Provide an integrated transportation facility with adequate facilities and amenities to cater to the requirements of all user groups. To encourage use of public transport through provision of park and ride facilities in the bus terminal. Smooth flow of all types of traffic to and from the terminal such that there is no congestion/disturbance caused to traffic along the main road. To create a mixed-use development with shopping, malls and other commercial activity, to enable people to fulfill all these needs through using bus transport

20 TTMC Benefits Economic value of time savings for passengers, due to reduced travel time as a result of smoother traffic flow through TTMC rather than through congested junction and bus stop. Economic value of fuel savings to BMTC, due to reduced fuel usage as a result of smoother flow of traffic through TTMC, less idle time at congested junction and on-road bus stop, and reduced travel distance. 21 New Initiatives of Environment Activities Handling and Disposal of Solid and Hazardous waste by installing separate dust bins at depots, Major bus stations, Workshops and TTMC s for different types of waste like dry and wet with neatly labeled and are easily accessible. Dust Bins

22 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Induction of CNG Buses:- CNG is colourless, odourless, Non-toxic and lighter than air, the dead weight of HSD filled in buses could be reduced considerably thereby the load on the buses is reduced. CNG is environmental friendly, compared to conventional type of fuel and hence a better alternate and safer fuel. CNG is cheaper for automobile application. BMTC Status in Induction of CNG Buses The land for setting up of the CNG stations in selected depots of BMTC. M/s. GAIL has been provided land for setting up of the CNG stations at Peenya, Sumanahlli and Hennur.

23 Induction of CNG fuelled buses in Bangalore City : CNG bus is the least polluting compared to diesel driven buses. BMTC is exploring the possibilities of introducing CNG buses in Bangalore City. Request is made to GoK for providing the financial assistance in terms of both CAPEX and OPEX for the introduction of CNG Buses.
