ORIGINS IN 2012, CCCTA RECEIVED A $4.32 MILLION GRANT FROM FTA CLEAN FUELS GRANT PROGRAM THE ELECTRIC TROLLEY S WERE BUILT LOCALLY BY GILLIG AND ARE THE FIRST ELECTRIC BUSES TO COME OFF THEIR LINE A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN GILLIG, BAE (MANUFACTURER OF THE ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEM) AND WAVE (THE MANUFACTURER OF THE INDUCTIVE CHARGING STATION).
BACKGROUND TROLLEYS WERE PURCHASED AT THE REQUEST OF THE CITY OF WALNUT CREEK THESE ELECTRIC BUSES SERVE ROUTE 4, A FREE DOWNTOWN CIRCULAR TO BART, WITH FARES PAID BY THE CITY OF WALNUT CREEK THE TROLLEY IS A NECESSARY AMENITY WHICH IS INTEGRAL TO THE SENSE OF PLACE IN THE CITY
OPERATING STATISTICS IN FY18, ELECTRIC TROLLEYS TRAVELLED ALMOST 60K MILES ON AN AVERAGE FY18 WEEKDAY, OVER 900 BOARDINGS ON ROUTE 4 AT 28.5 PASSENGERS PER HOUR, DOUBLE OUR AVERAGE OF 14.1 PASSENGERS AN HOUR ELECTRIC BUSES ON ROUTE 4 SAVES APPROXIMATELY 3,500 GALLONS OF FUEL AND 40 TONS OF CO2 EMISSIONS PER BUS, PER YEAR
WAVE INDUCTIVE CHARGING INDUCTIVE CHARGING DEVELOPED BY UNIVERSITY OF UTAH TRANSFERS OVER 50,000 WATTS UP TO EIGHT INCHES FROM THE GROUND A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CCCTA, WAVE, BART, PG&E AND THE CITY OF WALNUT CREEK
PARTNERSHIP AND ANALYSIS NREL (NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LABORATORY] ADVANCES THE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY, SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION, AND RENEWABLE POWER TECHNOLOGIES AND PROVIDES THE KNOWLEDGE TO INTEGRATE AND OPTIMIZE ENERGY SYSTEMS. KEY FINDINGS (APRIL 2018) Average Fuel Economy Miles Between Roadcalls
ELECTRIC TROLLEY COSTS TROLLEYS PURCHASED VIA COUNTY CONNECTION RFP IN 2012 PER VEHICLE COST FOR A 29FT DIESEL HYBRID ELECTRIC TROLLEY $691,583 CHANGE ORDER FROM HYBRID TO FULL ELECTRIC $274,789 COST PER ELECTRIC TROLLEY $966,372 COST FOR FOUR (4) TROLLEYS $3,865,488 WAVE CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE $1,015,000 PROJECT TOTAL $4,880,488
ELECTRICITY COSTS VS DIESEL NREL PRELIMINARY FINDINGS (UPDATED 8/30/17) PG&E A-1 Electricity Rate Electricity Converted to Diesel Gallon Equivalent (DGE)* Diesel Cost $0.25 /kwh $9.40 /gal-(electric equivalent) $1.50 /gal-diesel Fuel Economy (mpdge) Electric Trolley 13.4 Fuel Economy (mpg) Diesel Trolley Cost Per Mile: Electric Trolley Cost Per Mile: Diesel Trolley 3.8 (13 year old bus) $0.71 /mile $0.43 /mile

CONTINUING THE PARTNERSHIP: FOUR ADDITIONAL ELECTRIC BUSES
BACKGROUND CONTINUES THE PARTNERSHIP WITH BART, GILLIG, BAE, PG&E, AND CTE CCCTA IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING DELIVERIES WITH FULL SERVICE OPERATION EXPECTED THIS FALL CTE SUGGESTED ROUTE 5, WHICH ALSO CONNECTS TO WALNUT CREEK BART NEW INDUCTIVE CHARGER AT THE YARD PLANNED AS PART OF THE EXPANSION Route 5 to Walnut Creek BART
ADDITIONAL ELECTRIC BUS COSTS FOUR NEW 29FT GILLIG STANDARD BRANDED ELECTRIC BUSES PER VEHICLE COST FOR A ELECTRIC BUS $764,555 ADA EQUIPMENT $24,954 DELIVERY AMOUNT $2,550 TOTAL COST PER BUS (WITH STATE/LOCAL TAX) $858,958 PROJECT TOTAL (4 NEW BUSES) $3,435,832
LESSONS LEARNED ELECTRIC RATES MUST GO DOWN TO BE COMPETITIVE WITH DIESEL ELECTRIC BUSES STILL NOT RELIABLE AS A SIMILARLY EQUIPPED DIESEL BUS CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE AND PROCEDURES ARE CRITICAL TO EFFICIENT OPERATIONS CCCTA PLANS MORE CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE
