Energy Globe Award 2012/13 Diesel powered propulsion has worked well for many decades, sails for centuries. But do they fulfill the needs of modern yachting? Do they support an environmentally friendly way of living? Nowadays, the power demand of a yacht is much higher than it used to be. Conventionally powered yachts have 2 diesel-engines for propulsion, one or two generators, propane for cooking, and gasoline for the dinghy. This whole system is complicated, expensive, requires a lot of maintenance, and propane and gasoline can be very dangerous. The use of a combustion engine inevitably brings with it noise, exhausts, vibrations and oily films in the water. It is disturbing for the people on board and it is polluting the environment. Is that what you are looking for in an otherwise quiet and tranquil bay? After having cruised more than 50,000 miles during 23 years with motorboats and sailboats on several oceans, Michael and Heike Köhler were sure that there must be a better way for the energy supply and propulsion of yachts. They had a dream, that they could anchor in a bay, having all comfort on board without being forced to run a diesel engine. History of the Silent Yachts In 2005 they started R&D on a test catamaran. Based on the results of another 5 years and 15,000 miles, they started the design and the construction of Solarwave 46 - a purely solar-powered yacht. Solarwave 46 - the Proof of Concept was launched in There are hundreds of solar boats and thousands of electric boats all over the world, but Solarwave 46 was the first oceangoing yacht that powered the propulsion as well as all operational systems exclusively by solar. This includes induction cooktops, stove, microwave, grill, freezers and fridges, air conditioning, washing machine, and watermaker. Even the dinghy motor and the electric motorbike were solar-charged. No fuel, no gas, but a lot of luxury. Noiseless and emission free. With this unique concept of an independent energy supply Michael Köhler and his wife Heike started a rigorous 5 years sea-trial. They crossed all of Europe by river, sailed the dangerous Black Sea, the stormy Aegean, and then the Mediterranean. This 120 week experience was also enjoyed by hundreds of guests and visiting journalists. The functionality and sea capability of this yacht were fully monitored and analyzed and passed testing with flying colors. Solarwave accommodated 6-8 guests with electrically prepared full board, water production, cooling and heating. And on top of that Solarwave was able to power the engines, every day, in any weather condition. All exclusively with solar power. During this period of 5 years there was no need for maintenance or repairs on the solar panels or the batteries. The generator, which was on board for safety reasons, was working for approx. 50 hours, primarily to keep it lubricated and within maintenance requirements. During the same period of time, the electric motors worked more than 2,500 hours without any maintenance. The generator is in fact the only component that required scheduled maintenance, commensurate with minimal use. Solarwave 46 is the proof for the feasibility and the suitability for everyday use of the Silent-Propulsion-System. Based on this unique know how Michael and Heike Köhler developed Solarwave 64, Silent 55, and Silent 75. They started a series of production in 2 shipyards. These unique Solaryachts sailed up to now more than 35,000 miles on open sea without any need for maintenance of the whole drivetrain. Their yachts have been awarded with the Energy Globe Award in 2012 & 2013, with the I-novo Eco Award in 2016 and 2017, and is nominated for Multihull of the Year 2018.
