That s why we offer virtually all of our products with either diesel- or electric-powered motors: Morbark whole tree and brush chippers, tub and Wood Hog horizontal grinders, flails, Chiparvestor models, debarkers, peelers and more. Electric Leaves a Smaller Footprint Our electric-powered equipment eliminates diesel emissions such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and particulate matter immediately shrinking its carbon footprint. This can mean a lot in California and municipalities that have stricter emission regulations. By using electricpowered equipment when possible, you can improve the average emissions of your fleet and offset the growth you may want in other areas like the use of additional diesel-fueled loaders and trucks. Save Costs: Electric Runs for Less Cut Energy Costs in Half We all understand that the price of diesel fuel and electricity fluctuates and varies by region. But, generally speaking, our electric-powered equipment runs for half the energy costs. Phil Harless, territory manager for PAPÉ Machinery, a Morbark dealership in California, explains a rough calculation of savings: As a rule of thumb, we see about $8 per 100 HP per hour for electricity. If you have a 1,000-HP machine, you would use approximately $80 per hour for electricity. With diesel at $4 per gallon, that machine can burn up to 50 gallons per hour or $200 per hour for diesel." That kind of savings in operations adds up fast. If your application can be stationary, it pays to consider electric. Less Maintenance, Less Downtime Maintaining an electric motor is a dream with no oil and filter changes, no engine tune-ups, and no coolant demands. That lowers the cost in materials, crew time, and maintenance downtime. And in the longer term, our electric-powered equipment doesn t have the pistons and diesel engine parts that can wear over time. 4 Electric Pioneers 1960s: Morbark starts building electric-powered sawmill systems. 1965: Our first electric-powered, stationary wood chippers are produced. 1950s: Norval Morey invents his portable tree debarker and founds Morbark in Late 1950s: Morbark builds the first electric-powered debarkers. 1970s: Dutch elm disease helps create a market for a mobile wood chipper. In answer, the Morbark Chiparvestor is named as product of the year. 1986: Morbark supports the recycling market for stumps and green waste with the Morbark waste recycler. 1990s: We introduced the first industrial tub grinders for wood waste recycling and land-clearing operations in 1990 and the electric version in The Morbark Wood Hog horizontal grinder came out in 1994, with the electric version released before the end of that decade. 3

6 Cleaner, Greener, More Efficient Your Partner for Better Solutions Morbark designs and builds electric-powered systems for customers with diverse needs and applications. We help them harness the power of electric-driven equipment to reduce emissions, noise, maintenance, and operating costs. Our primary goals are landfill diversion and environmental compliance, says Kevin Barnes, solid waste director, Bakersfield DPW. His team was surprised at the efficiency and the low operating costs. That we had to reevaluate our operating costs downward because of the grinder efficiency is a nice testimony to Morbark and its focus on what s important for its customers. Reduced Pollution and Energy Costs Dept. of Public Works (DPW), Bakersfield, CA California s Central Valley has some of the state s poorest air quality. With strict emission-compliance programs in place, the DPW faced a challenge. The workload at its wood and green waste operation was tripling every five years. But more or bigger grinders would mean bigger diesel emissions, which would head in the wrong direction. The DPW switched from two diesel Morbark tub grinders to a pair of larger, electric-powered Morbark Model 7600 Wood Hogs. The 1,000-HP horizontal grinders process more than 210,000 tons of wood and green waste annually to send to area cogeneration plants and a biosolids composter. 5

7 Consistency, Power, Safety, Savings TiFuel, Greeneville, TN TC Taylor s company had been reliant on grinding contractors for approximately three decades. TiFuel takes old railroad ties, sells the best for landscaping, and grinds the rest as biomass boiler fuel. After careful evaluation and consultation with his Morbark field sales specialist, Taylor selected an electric-powered Morbark 4600XL Wood Hog to bring TiFuel s grinding in-house. After running the numbers, we saw we could realize some really nice savings, not just in fuel but also in maintenance and upkeep costs with the electric machine, says Taylor. We also liked that we could avoid the risk of combining creosote-soaked ties, a hot grinder, and diesel fuel. Finally, when you consider that there are no diesel emissions from this machine and it runs quieter than the machines feeding it, going electric just made so much sense. Today, TiFuel collects more than 1.3 million used ties per year about half of everything that the Norfolk Southern railroads generate. Using the Morbark 4600XL has been so successful, Taylor plans to increase the volume at his first site and possibly expand to a second. Less Noise and Cleaner Air Make for Good Neighbors South Tahoe Refuse and Recycling Company, South Lake Tahoe, CA In South Lake Tahoe, this waste and recycling company is located at the edge of town, near other commercial operations and residential neighborhoods. While planning its green waste facility, the company was primarily concerned about diesel fumes inside the building where people would be working. We also have very strict emissions regulations not just California s but also in South Lake Tahoe. So it was very important for us to look at the electric version of the grinder, says John Marchini, operations manager. With close proximity to neighbors, he also wanted to keep the noise to a minimum. After touring another facility and seeing the Morbark Wood Hog horizontal grinder in action, South Tahoe Refuse found the right machine. Since April 2010, the company has been running wood, branches, pine needles, and construction materials through the Wood Hog. We are extremely satisfied with the machine, says Marchini. We absolutely love our Morbark machine. It s been amazingly reliable. It processes all of the material we need to process on a daily basis, without fail. 6
