2 2 Integrating Mining & Renewable Power (Excellent track record growing) Renewable Power (Wind, Solar, ) is gaining good track record to deliver robust products in various climatic conditions in Remote Locations: Bonaire Island (11 MW wind, 3 MW storage, Max penetration 75%, average load 8 MW) Diavik Mine (9.2 MW wind, Max penetration 56%, average load 25 MW) Raglan Mine (3 MW wind, 600 kw storage, Max penetration 33%; average load 16 MW) The cost of RP is lower than the price of Fossil Fuel and provide price certainty and reduce carbon tax obligation (where applicable). The Renewable Power will play a significant role in the future of the mining industry

5 5 Why Hybrid System and High Penetration High Production Cost in remote location particular in remote villages (25 cents/kwh to 50 cents/kwh, was twice two years ago due to high fuel cost) Carbon Tax to increase significantly (already corresponds to 1 to 3 cents/kwh, could double within 5 years) Cost of Energy Storage to decrease by 50% within 5 to 10 years High Penetration can reduce fossil fuel utilisation by more than 50% and generation significant cost savings.
6 6 High Penetration Challenges Respect Constraint of Operation on genset Operate Genset withing an acceptable range (from 70% to 100% its capacity factor) to prevent internal glazing and carbon buildup and to stay within efficient operation range. Maintain spinning reserves to cope with load changes Maintain Grid stability Maintain Frequency and Voltage within an acceptable range Maintain Harmonics and power factors at acceptable levels Grid is typically robust initially and most remain robust to strong wind power variability Events to Consider: Major Icing events (sudden stop) Turbulent wind (v.g.: during blizzards) Cut-off wind speed (sudden stop) Trip events
7 Meeting High Penetration Requirements Total load = Total production at all times. Maintain sufficient Spinning reserve such production can meet varying loads or Curtail Renewable Power Design with sufficient generation Ramp rates to meet the maximum variations Implement Load shedding if total load not met. Respect the Time to required start a Genset Add Energy Storage to complement: Spinning reserves, Maintain load during the time it takes to start a genset, To minimize variability from renewable powers. Provide additional Reactive Power to maintain Power Factors Smart Controls to dispatch Gensets, Energy Storages and Renewable Powers 7
