1 MKE Drive Systems Driving Forward Welcome to the fifth issue of our newsletter. Firstly we would like to wish all our customers a slightly belated happy and prosperous new year. As we head in to the new year we are pleased to be able to share good news. With your continuing support MKE Drive Systems have just completed the best year so far in respect to our ABB Drives partnership. In line with our continuing growth we have recruited an additional two members of staff, with plans for a third, these will be introduced in due course via our staff focus section. The water industry section of our drives business has been a very strong area of growth. To accommodate this there has been some reorganisation within MKE Drive Systems. Steve Bootes, who has been the motive force behind the drives business for the past nine years, is now focusing specifically on managing Drives Water; Steve was covered in the Staff Focus section, issue 3, of this newsletter (all previous news letters can be down loaded from Luke Archer is now responsible for managing all other aspects of Drives & Controls that are not water industry related; for those of you that do not already know him, Luke is introduced in the Staff Focus section of this newsletter on page 3. 2 Product life cycle status update ABB ACS800 Since the introduction of the first ACS880 industrial drives during 2014 we have been actively encouraging our customers to consider the ACS880 as the way forward. From the end of 2016 the following variants of the ACS800 industrial drives have all been moved to the Classic stage of their life cycle. 01 wall mounted 02 floor standing 04 moduls 07 cabinet built Multidrives & multidrive modules This means ABB are no longer accepting further orders for these models. Full service and spares support is available during the classic phase of their life cycle but as they move through the Limited and Obsolete phases the availability will reduce and lead times are likely to extend. For anybody who is unsure which model the ACS800 is, they have operator keypads as shown on the top right of this page. If you have any of the above variants of ACS800 drives installed at your site, and wish to develop an upgrade plan, MKE are happy to visit your site and talk through the options available. ACS800 regenerative and low-harmonic drives (ACS800-11/14/17/31/34/37) will be available without changes until further notice. Product is in active sales and manufacturing phase. 3 Staff focus In September 2016 Luke Archer took the role of Drives and Controls manager within MKE. Luke has a long history with MKE, his first experience was while still of school age, he completed his as work experience within the MKE Detling workshop. Luke then joined MKE as an apprentice in During his apprenticeship Luke had block release time at Loughborough Collage and gained hands on experience in the MKE Detling workshop. While in the workshop he learned the skills required to repair and rewind electric motors, also repair small pumps and gearboxes. As well as the workshop based training Luke was introduced to a large variety of site repair and service work, regularly involved in bearing replacements, DC brush maintenance, and motor changes. Alongside the core skills involved Luke also became proficient in laser alignment and fan balancing. In 2007 Luke transferred across to the Drives department at Sittingbourne where he completed his apprenticeship and furthered his education with attendance at Mid Kent Collage. Within the Drives department Luke gained additional experience in the areas of panel building, installation of new panels, retrofitting drive systems within existing controls, and fault finding within existing control systems. As his experience and capabilities grew Luke was involved in larger installations and was soon supervising his own projects and installation teams. Luke says, Starting with motor repairs has given me a good understanding of electric motors which has helped me with some tricky fault finding jobs over the years. I soon developed a keen interest in motor control systems and have enjoyed the challenges presented by fault finding and working on bespoke applications. The on-going success and expansion of the Drives Department has now given me the opportunity to progress to a management position. The next challenge that I am looking forward to is continuing the expansion, and building on the success, that the Drives Department has experienced over the past years. MKE's commitment to training apprentices has been mentioned previously in these newsletters. 4 Product spotlight The Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specification for low voltage AC motors (WIMES 3.03 issue 6), created by The Pump Centre working closely with the countries water utilities, defines the mechanical and electrical requirements for equipment used in the UK water industry. This drive follows the ABB philosophy of everything you require being supplied as standard within the body. This saves space as there are no ancillary items to be fitted. The integral RFI filter is class C2 compliant (suitable for 1 st environment), the integral choke is ABB s patented second generation swinging choke which provides up 25% less harmonic distortion at partial loads when compared conventional chokes of equal size. The drive has the additional advantages of built in PID control to reduce the requirement for external automation equipment, embedded RS485 Modbus for fieldbus control, and specific water industry features such as pump cleaning to reduce blockages and down time. The new control panels, fitted to the ACQ580 drives, have additional user functionality with improvements in ease of use. As always the information displayed is changeable by the end user but now multiple screens can be created showing information in numeric format, bar graph, trends, or even dial gauges. Connection of drive software tools is now via a USB socket at the bottom of the keypad. The USB protocol removes the need to worry about communication settings and a standard micro USB cable is all that is required. A further bonus with the USB connection on the operator keypad is no need for access in to control enclosures. If the operator keypad is fitted to the enclosure door connecting the drive is extremely easy, plug the USB cable in to the operator keypad and start the ABB Drive Composer software. And for bonus on top of bonus, there is a free version of the Drive Composer software that can be downloaded from the ABB website. Page 4
