Battery & Energy Storage 29 th November 2017 The Slate at University of Warwick Faithful Chanda Innovation & Low Carbon Networks Engineer
Battery & Energy Storage Agenda Who we are Context Network issues Storage Projects: Industrial & Commercial Project LV Connect & Manage Solar Storage Conclusion
Industrial & Commercial Storage Project Western Power Distribution 7.8 Million customers over a 55,500 sq kms service area WPD network consists of 216,000 kms of overhead lines and underground cables, and 184,000 substations LV to 132kV Network ownership Network - East Midlands, West Midlands, South Wales, and South West
Battery & Energy Storage Context Network Issues Constrained and overloaded grid Reduction in centralised generation Rapidly increasing sale of EVs EVs are part of electrical energy systems Smart systems require control Climate change is happening New loads and load profiles on the grid Increase in distributed generation A strong future for distributed storage
Battery & Energy Storage A typical demand increase in EVs From the start of data collection (Q2, 2012) the cumulative Electric Vehicle (EV) data shows a sustained and dramatic growth of the EV car and van market In Q2, 2012, there were 3,000 registered EV s on the road By Q2, 2014, this had rose to over 10,000 After this time there was exponential growth The latest results Q3, 2016, shows 90,000 registered EV s
Battery & Energy Storage The future strategy for managing the grid Statement: There is an increase in demand for electric vehicles The grid can do one of three things to cope with this demand: Option 1: Introduce more capacity to the grid through generation and expand the networks capacity Option 2: Introduce more flexible generation in order to deal with spikes seen from chargers Option 3: Introduce local storage to greatly reduce the demand spike by using storage to deal with the ramp up of power Option 3 is the most cost effective for the network as options 1 & 2 both require the local, and eventually, the national network to be upgraded in order to handle the capacity increase / capacity potential.

Industrial & Commercial Storage Project
Industrial & Commercial Storage Project Project Aims & Objectives Promote innovation, flexibility and non-network solutions (50kW, 210kWh) Engage with Industrial and Commercial Customers to test Energy Storage Systems Determining the scope of terms and conditions and practical implications of using batteries on the LV networks Attitudinal analysis and performance assessment of participants within the commercial environment Development of new policies, processes and systems to support commercial deployment of Energy Storage Systems Provide knowledge to inform new regulations.
Industrial & Commercial Storage Project Trial sites Spilsby Cardiff Boston Taunton
Industrial & Commercial Storage Project Operating modes Varied test configurations at 4 WPD sites Spilsby Taunton Boston Cardiff Peak Shaving + PV integration Demonstrating Backup/Islanding Active control by WPD Own controller and scheduling tools UK Standard Battery Storage approach. Most common use case today in the UK At peak demand, storage can be used to eliminate peaks Sensing either grid failure or a simulation of grid failure the energy storage system then energises the selected maintained loads Flexibility and scalability for various trials -Operating the site at constant load, constant voltage, etc. FFR, Triad Avoidance and DUoS Charge reduction
Industrial & Commercial Storage Project Site works Delivery of the Energy Storage units to site (s) June 2017 Civil works Plinth all sites Electrical connections: Spilsby 27 th of July - No shutdown Boston 25 th of July - Shutdown for 3hrs Cardiff 29/30 th July. New busbar installed for connection due to insufficient capacity in existing DB Taunton Planned for November Commissioning: Spilsby 14 th August Boston 16 th August Cardiff 9 th October Taunton - December
In general we can use the Tesla Powerpacks for. Industrial & Commercial Storage Project Grid Support Energy Management Others Grid support 1. Load Shifting 2. Voltage support 3. Stability 4. Peak shaving Uninterruptible Power Supply Energy Management 1. Bulk Energy Trading 2. Arbitrage Original load profile Load profile after Powerpack Grid support 1. Primary & Secondary reserve 1. Emergency backup 2. Power Quality 2. Black Start 3. Load following/levelling
What does this mean to a customer? Industrial & Commercial Storage Project Deliver more options for customer connections through alternative connections develop an alternative connection agreement for behind-the-meter Triad avoidance Lower future DUoS charges due to the reduced reinforcement requirements Overall reduction in power consumption due to onsite generation Access to the flexible market Through storage customers can support the local grid independently and reduce strain on the network
LV Connect & Manage Project
Low carbon technology (LCT) connections on LV network: Trend for clustering Hard to predict and plan ahead reinforcement Traditional reinforcement is expensive and takes time Delayed customers connections Reverse Power Flow (RPF) impact on distribution network LV Connect and Manage
LV Connect and Manage LV Connect & Manage outline 1.7m NIA project (April March 2019) Ability to provide more power during non peak hours Bi-directional power flow control via Domestic Load Controller (DLC) hardware Accelerate connection of LCTs (storage, EVs, heat pumps) Protect WPD assets from overload 6 distribution substations and 100 customers in Furzton, Milton Keynes (Energy Storage) and West Bridgford, Nottingham (EV chargers)
LV Connect and Manage Objectives The project objectives are to trial and demonstrate: Smart ANM solution for LV network Possibility of load management, as an alternative to network reinforcement BPL communication - Broadband over powerline (substation to customers homes) New business processes, based on proven, off-the-shelf technology, which can be quickly and cost effectively deployed
Customer benefits LV Connect and Manage Intelligent interface to accelerate connection of LCTs (storage, EVs, heat pumps) Avoid costly reinforcement Reduced amount of street works Provide flexibility to export more power during non peak hours or/and use stored energy in self consumption mode Consume energy in more sustainable, environmentally friendly way. Reduce amount of CO 2 emissions
