1 Fast track to Sustainable Mobility SNCF V350 CATENARY CERTIFICATION with respect to the TSI-ENE 1

3 The Eastern France European HSL Objectives : Commercial operation at 320km/h from June 2007, Compliance with the High-Speed TSI-ENE specifications, Interoperable at the service opening, Catenary designed for 350km/h. SNCF, as the railway equipment project manager, had to take these requirements into account. Result : Certification of the SNCF V350 catenary as an interoperable constituent. 3

4 Design of the SNCF IGTE V350 catenary The Engineering department of SNCF, Electric Traction unit (IGTE), designed a catenary for 350km/h. This design is based on the experience gained by SNCF in the field of high-speed lines in the last 25 years, and in particular on the design of the Mediterranean High-Speed Line. 5 Advantages In the design phase, the European aspects of the project as well as the interoperability requirements have: imposed : a process for monitoring conformity, traceability in each design phase, required special attention and methods in order to : justify the design choices, validate the equipments design basis, check the different components conformity, while respecting the quality control procedures. During the system performance tests, compliance was checked. 5

6 Why certifying the SNCF IGTE V350 catenary? Objective : to state this catenary as an interoperable constituent for a commercial speed of 350km/h. Every design evolution has been performed in accordance with the requirements of the TSI-ENE and corresponding standards: From the technical point of view : Respect of current collection quality (simulation with OSCAR) Respect of the energy capability (simulation with Esméralda) Check of mechanical and geometrical requirements From the organisation and quality point of view : requirements and design review 6

7 Catenary constituent design certification procedure At the end of the design phase, a certification body assessed the conformity of this interoperable constituent, by examining the design and development report. Main standards: TSI-ENE («Energy» Sub-system) Related standards such as the EN 50119, 50317, 50318, ISO Objective : to establish a type certificate by examining the design. 7

8 Type certificate Outcome of the certification process : Type certificate by examination of the the design Declare the SNCF V350 catenary as an interoperable constituent for a commercial speed of 350 km/h 8

9 Conformity of construction During the construction phase : the certification body examined the construction process, especially the assembly and the tests prior to the putting into service. During the tests : assessment of the current collection quality and of the contact wire uplift at speeds greater than 360km/h. This assessment is the guarantee for the client that a high level of conformity has been reached. 9

10 Feedback from experience For more than a year : operation of the line at 320km/h without any catenary incident. This catenary contributed to the success of the world record at km/h, after minor adjustments in sections run at more than 400 km/h. Up to 400 km/h, curent collection criteria were respecting the TSI. 10

11 Conclusion The challenge consisted in demonstrating, during the design phase : the conformity of the retained solution for a speed of 350km/h the fulfillment of the TSI specifications the validity of the simulation results the current collection quality This evaluation allowed to assess the relevance of the TSI requirements, and their application. Besides, the experience shows that changes must be brought to the contact line geometry tolerances. The uniformity criterion does not seem relevant. Nevertheless these requirements allow to propose innovative solutions. In conclusion In conclusion : this catenary design is applicable to any high-speed line project, from 300km/h to 350km/h 11
