By 2:00 PM Jim Loux, Dave Wightman and John Farr were lined up with the AACA cars behind the bowling alley, and went into the square shortly after that. The Model A group arrived in 3 cars, including TLC members Howard Holmes and Phyllis Novak. The number of cars on display dropped to about 200, as seasonal residents went back up north. Dave Wightman s 1912 touring Jim Loux 1922 touring Ocala International Airport Plane and Car Show Saturday, May 5, 2012 Over 100 cars and about 20 antique aircraft were at the airport for the four day event. Jim Loux brought his Model T over Friday but did not take pictures. He said there was a good crowd and he had a good time. I drove Lizzie over Saturday and arrived at noon. It was hot on the tarmac, but fortunately the event ended at 2:30 PM. There were lots of cars, with Lizzie being the oldest. Some Ocala AACA member s cars. The real star of this show was a 1929 Ford Trimotor, also affectionately known as the Tin Goose. Airport continued next page. Tin Lizzie Club of North Central Florida, Page 2

3 Airport, continued Then, when you look closely at the aircraft you ll see that the wings are very large compared to modern aircraft. And the power plant was more than sufficient. The corrugated aluminum wings and body created drag. This design drawback resulted in its slow cruising speed of 90 mph. aircraft was kept busy, with long lines of waiting passengers. I was amazed to see it take off in what seemed like 100 feet. It did not need much more to land, either. If you look closely, in the background you ll see people boarding the Trimotor aircraft. It was very quiet compared to later aircraft engine designs. 199 of these planes were built from , and as of 2012, there are 18 Ford Trimotors still in existence, eight of which have current FAA Airworthy Certificates. The Steve Already Planning for 2013 Winter Tour Hi All, I've finally closed the books on this year's tour and am publishing this account to be "transparent"...in the current lingo! (I like the concept...and maybe we should help Washington to get it right!) In summary, we are slightly better off financially after this year's tour, with more in the coffers for next year's deposits. I think we'll need it. RE: NEXT YEAR's locations? and projected date: March 4-8. I've considered six, visited five and anticipate proposals from four, 2 rec'd so far and two more coming soon. The pros and cons of the four locations follow in my personal ranking: #1, Mt Dora, The Lakeside Inn. Just our size...we'd be exclusive for the week. Owned by the son of one of our Winter Tour participants! Walking distance to many shops and restaurants is a nice small town in central FL. We could have some nice tour routes through a lakes area of central FL. Only a couple of down sides, a) very tight trailer parking, requiring us to also use a couple of city lots. b) the banqueting isn't as spacious as previous Tour, continued next page Tin Lizzie Club of North Central Florida, Page 3

4 Tour, continued. years, but they can feed us. #2 Daytona Beach, the Plaza Resort & Spa. It's on the beach and has "grand" space and facilities. Somewhat closer to St Augustine and further from the speedway than last time in Daytona. Still will be somewhat congested traffic until we get away from town. We'd slip in, between "Speed Week" and "Bike Week"...both huge Speedway events. They'll make a complete level of their enclosed parking garage available exclusively for us...tall enough, covered and secure! The trailer parking is going to also be tight and people will need to park them not rely on them during the week. #3 Howey-in-the-Hills, Mission Inn: A great golf facility and there is plenty of space for us. We'd probably park trailers along their resort's roadway on what looks like a golf course fairway...on grass. Pretty rural, good route options (identical to Mt Dora) but would require us to use a modern car or allow travel time if we went off the facility for anything else. #4 Hammock Beach, Hammock Beach Resort Awesome golf facility on the beach...half way from Daytona to St Augustine...perfect location to tour both. Could be more pricey. Also somewhat remote...with only a few other services close by. Parking would be an issue but they have indicated willingness for us to use several parking lots. BUT, if the winds blow off the Ocean, we'd get some salt spray on the cars (no covered garage). The "T" women I've spoken with seem to like the idea of Mt Dora best: small town, relaxed, walking to shops and restaurants. Comments???? Please give me your thoughts. I want to lock down the facility and then relax for the summer, before working on the routes in the fall. Steve (Ed. Or maybe visit a museum or other location of interest? How about an ice cream tour during these hot days? Perhaps someone could host an Independence Day party in lieu of our July meeting (not on July 4, because of parade commitments). 5 Car For Sale This is a "pre-electric starter" car...the only downside I can see, (if nec) it can easily be converted without hurting anything. You only have to replace the transmission cover with a later unit and add a battery, switch, etc etc. These parts are readily available. The originals can be retained to put it back to "standard", if you want. They are asking $20k for it, but would possibly accept slightly less. You can't purchase and restore one to this level for $20K today. By Steve Ellis Hi John and Alan. Attached is a picture of a recently restored 1915 Model T, owned by the couple listed below. I saw it at a recent estate sale that I attended in Missouri. It is all correct, great brass and very nice. Of course, it ran very well too. Wouldn't this be perfect for the monthly show on the square??? Could you please add it to your "For Sale" web listings? Also remember, that my mother lives in the St Louis area and I've been going up checking on her more frequently, so enclosed transportation could probably be arranged with me too.
