Alkimos Beach Energy Storage Trial (ABEST) FAQ Battery specific questions 1. Where is the CESD located? The community energy scale device (CESD) is located on land owned by the Water Corporation, in the buffer zone adjacent to the Escarpment Village on Graceful Blvd, Alkimos Beach. 2. What s the difference between a battery and the CESD, is it just a large battery? The CESD is the complete system, there are hundreds of smaller batteries connected together in battery banks to make one CESD. The CESD includes the communication equipment, housing, electrical switchgear, a control system, temperature control system, weather protection and importantly the battery banks and inverters (which convert the electricity from DC to AC). 3. What type of battery has been used? The CESD is a lithium ion based energy storage device. In comparison to lead-acid batteries that you have in your car, lithium based batteries allow faster charging and discharging, have a higher energy density per weight and are low maintenance. 4. How many CESDs are there and how large are they? There is only one CESD. The site is comprised of two 6m x 2.5m containers, one which contains the batteries and the other containing the balance of electrical equipment. 5. The storage trial refers to a battery. How big is the battery? The storage device is the size of a shipping container 6m x 2.5m and consists of racks of smaller individual batteries wired together. There is one device located in Alkimos Beach which is fully enclosed and completely safe. 6. How many hours of storage does the CESD provide? The maximum discharge and charge rate is restricted to 350Kw. The capacity is 1,100kWh. Generally, considering technical performance, load and efficiency, including other electrical losses within the system, the battery is on average able to discharge up to 4 hours of electricity for continuous consumption. 7. What is the benefit of the CESD? In general, when excess solar energy is generated from residential rooftop PV systems during the middle of the day (when there is plenty of sunshine), electricity is exported from the home to the Western Power network. The trial, using a community scale Lithium Ion energy storage device (CESD) will last up to four years and provide insights into the benefits of integrating renewable generation and energy storage and

dispatch into a traditional electricity network. The trial also supports the vision for Alkimos Beach in creating an environmentally conscious and sustainable community. The trial is intended to provide a better understanding of how community scale infrastructure combined with energy efficiency incentives may help manage and reduce household energy costs. 8. Who can use the battery? This trial is available to Alkimos Beach development residents (residential only) through participation in Synergy s Peak Demand Saver retail plan by meeting the following eligibility criteria: Participants must have an approved small scale renewable energy solar system (no smaller than 1.5kW and no greater than 5kW (Inverter)) Customers will need to opt in to a Non-standard form contract with Synergy and are subject to the product T&Cs. 9. What equipment do I need to be able to use the battery? Other than your solar panels, no additional equipment is required. Register your interest to participate in the trial by contacting Synergy at or or call Is my house connected to the battery? No, there is no physical connection to the battery. The battery is connected to the network. Any excess energy generated by a customer s PV system is exported into the network. 11. Am I storing and drawing power from the battery or the network? From the network. The energy you export goes into the network and the battery is charged from the network. During peak times of energy usage, the battery discharges the stored energy into the network. 12. No one in the community is connected to the battery, then how can it be a community storage device? The trial involves only residents at Alkimos Beach. Because the storage device is located at Alkimos Beach, only residents there will be able to take advantage of rebates for energy efficient appliances and new retail tariffs that provide discounts on energy from the network at different times of day. Residents within the Alkimos Beach community are indirectly connected to the battery through the wider network. There is no direct connection to the battery. The individual metering units at the customer residences, and the unit, allows Synergy to see if there is excess generation at any of the houses, and then attribute this to the battery. From this is then possible to true up the energy consumption for the customer. This concept is called virtual Storage. 13. How long will the battery system be there for? The operational phase of this demonstration project will last four years ( ). During that time, performance data and statistics will be collated and analysed and shared with ARENA, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency that co-funded the trial, industry and the public as part of the knowledge sharing for the ABEST project.

14. Has this sort of storage device been used anywhere else in the world? What s been the experience? Yes, this technology is well developed however, this is the first time it s been used within a residential community and in conjunction with energy efficiency initiatives. 15. Who gets access to electricity stored in the battery? Energy stored by the device is discharged into the network during times of peak energy consumption. 16. If my neighbour doesn t participate in the trial, how are they prevented from contributing to or drawing from the battery? Energy discharged by the device goes into the network and is distributed to all households. However, only residents participating in the trial are offered discounts on energy usage. 17. What is the risk of the battery leaking? The individual battery cells are modular and sealed. The battery banks are fully contained in an enclosure to prevent any spills. The condition of the batteries and plant are continually monitored via an online system. Synergy has also been conducting risk assessment workshops with the various stakeholders to identify initial projects risks. These will continue throughout the project as required. 18. What are the environmental impacts? All required planning and environmental approvals were obtained prior to the construction. The CESD is designed to not harm the environment and to enhance the effectiveness of clean energy alternatives, such as solar. 19. What happens to the batteries at the end of the project? At the end of the four year trial, all aboveground project infrastructure and equipment will be decommissioned and the areas reinstated. The batteries will be safely returned to the local supplier for appropriate disposal and recycling. 20. Is there any noise from the battery? Noise levels are very minimal. The design and installation of the system complies with all applicable Australian Standards. To date there have been no noise issues from the battery. 21. Will there be any air emissions? The CESD does not produce air emissions. Like any other residential rooftop PV system, the ABEST project will utilise the sun s renewable energy to generate electricity. The expected quantity of carbon dioxide emissions over the operational phase of the trial is negligible. 22. Do the batteries need to be maintained?

The batteries including the other electrical equipment installed on site will need to be maintained periodically over the 4 year trial period based on the manufacturer s maintenance requirements and schedules. Therefore, access to the CESD site and batteries will be required by the maintenance personnel. The impact of maintenance on household usage of the CESD is expected to be minimal. 23. Is there a risk of electrocution? The CESD site location is suitably fenced off with access by authorised personnel only. This is for the security and safety of the general public and any wildlife. The energy storage system is fully integrated and contained within a lockable enclosure. All electrical cabling between the system and Western Power s transformer is installed underground and the storage system is earthed. Only authorised personnel have access to the storage system enclosure. 24. Is the battery safe for people? Just like the battery you use in everyday personal devices, the battery is safe to the public. Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) surround all electricity infrastructure and the battery system may induce some EMF. EMF has been the subject of study to confirm if it has an impact on people. The WHO (World Health Organisation) has looked at 25,000 articles published over the past thirty years there is no evidence to conclude that exposure to low level electromagnetic fields is harmful to human health What is the risk of the battery causing a fire or exploding? This risk of this occurring is very low. The CESD enclosure is of a suitable fire rating with a smoke detection system and fire suppression system. The system is restricted to the general public with Authorised Entry Only. One of the most prevalent type of rechargeable batteries used nowadays is the lithium-ion battery. It s used in mobile phones, laptop computers, GPS systems, electronic handheld devices, and even cars are now using lithium-ion rechargeable battery technology. Only trained and qualified personnel will be allowed to install and maintain the battery storage system. In addition to the protective circuits that restrict overcharging, the CESD will have appropriate control and monitoring systems to indicate equipment status. If appropriately maintained, the risk of the system exploding and catching fire is extremely low How will I save money? How much money will I save if I am involved? Every customer is different. The opportunity to save energy and money depends on a number of things including the size and orientation of the PV system, how many people live in the home, design of the home, the type of appliances and the times of day the resident uses them(the most energy). Refer to for more details. Participating in trials like this, means that Synergy is better placed to anticipate customer needs and match them to new products and services.

27. I am being offered a different pricing plan (tariff), how do I compare it to my current tariff? As part of your offer to take up the Peak Demand Saver plan you should have received information about the pricing plan and its suitability to you to help you understand how to better manage your energy use to maximise your benefits from Synergy. As an example, if a customer uses most of the power during the day, including the energy generated by their Solar PV, then the Peak Demand Saver is probably not for them as they will be unlikely to have sufficient solar credits to off-set the Peak and Off-Peak evening rates. 28. How will the trial work? Virtual storage (no physical connections to the battery) Battery connected to the network Residents install PV and other energy efficient appliances Eligible residents are being offered to sign up to Synergy s Peak Demand Saver plan that offers reduced rates during certain times of day encouraging households to make the most of their solar PV systems by storing excess energy generated during the day for use in the evenings and at night when the sun goes down This helps households take control of when and how they use energy to maximise the potential savings. Peak Demand Saver Plan trial questions 29. What is the Peak Demand Saver plan? Peak Demand Saver is a time-of-use pricing plan with virtual energy storage that has been developed by Synergy for the Energy Storage Trial at Alkimos Beach. Virtual energy storage + Time of Use pricing + Solar Sell Back credits = Peak Demand Saver plan The Plan is a simplified three tiered TOUS product offering two rates across three time bands consistent all year round, with off-peak pricing less than the A1 rate. In addition to the time-of-use periods, any excess solar PV generation will be off set against your usage during the Peak Daily and then the Off-peak Evening time period reflective of how a battery storage system would work i.e allowing the usage of solar generated units during non-daylight hours. Any remaining excess energy at the end of your billing period will then be paid to you as Synergy Sell Back credits. 30. How does this product work? Time-of-use pricing with virtual energy storage The Peak Demand Saver Plan has only two pricing periods Peak and Off-peak. Instead of getting paid for the excess energy that the customers solar PV system produces, through REBS, by signing up to the Peak Demand Saver plan, the excess units you generate during the midnight to 4pm period will be converted to solar credits which will be virtually stored to be used to off-set your energy usage from 4pm-midnight. At the end of the customer s billing period any remaining solar credits will be paid out at c/unit (equivalent to the REBS rate).

31. What are the time periods and prices? Time band Time Rate Solar Credit Off-Peak Day Midnight to 4pm c/unit *lower than the A1 rate Peak Daily 4pm to 8pm c/unit *higher than the A1 rate 0 Solar credits accumulated (i.e excess generation) are not applied during this period. Accumulated Solar credits are first applied here to help offset peak electricity reflecting the use of the virtual battery. Off-Peak Evening 8pm to midnight c/unit Remaining accumulated Solar credits are applied here to help offset peak electricity reflecting the use of the virtual battery. Any remaining solar credits generated by the end of the billing period will be paid out as Solar Sell Back credits at a rate of c/unit equivalent to REBS. Additional daily charges: Virtual energy storage c/day ($11/month) Daily supply charge c/day

32. What is the virtual energy storage charge for? Your solar PV system will work as normal. However, instead of selling any excess electricity from your solar PV system back to Synergy, as on the REBS for example, you ll generate solar credits for this excess energy which are then virtually stored to the battery. These credits will be used to off-set your energy consumption between 4pm and midnight which are times when traditionally your PV system provides little or no benefit. For example: During your billing period, your panels have generated an average excess of 2 kwh of electricity each day; the energy you use between 4pm and midnight will be directly off set by 2kWh each day. 33. What is Time-of-use pricing Time-of-use pricing offers variable pricing depending on the time of day you use electricity. To keep it simple the Peak Demand Saver plan is a seven day pricing plan with two pricing periods - Peak and Off-peak. 34. Peak Demand Saver plan time bands and attributes explained Peak Daily (4pm - 8pm) If everyone uses electricity during peak times a fair bit of strain can be placed on the electricity supply. To help reduce demand on the electricity grid the Peak Daily rate is charged at a higher price at c/unit. Your accumulated excess solar credits will first be used here to off-set the higher peak rate. Off-peak Day (midnight - 4pm) and Off-peak Evening (8pm - midnight) To reward you for shifting your usage into the Off-peak periods and reducing the demand on the electricity grid, you ll get a much lower rate of cents per unit. That s more than 2.5% cheaper per unit than our standard Synergy Home Plan (A1 tariff). Plus, any remaining solar credits will be off set against the Off-peak Evening period. Please note, credits are not applied to the Off-peak Day time period- this period is treated as the virtual battery charging period to be discharged during the Peak and Off-peak evening periods. Solar Sell Back credits If, during your billing period, you ve generated more solar credits than the amount of energy you ve consumed between the Peak Daily and Off-peak Evening time periods (4pm and midnight), it won t go to waste. You ll still receive Solar Sell Back credits for this electricity. Synergy will pay you cents per unit for it, which is equivalent to the current REBS rate.

35. How will I save money? How much money will I save if I am involved? Every customer is different. The opportunity to save energy and money depends on a number of things including the size of the PV system, how many people live in the home, the type of appliances and the times of day the resident uses the most energy. 36. I am being offered the Peak Demand Saver plan (tariff), how do I compare it to my current tariff? As part of your offer to take up the Peak Demand Saver plan you should have received information from Synergy about the pricing plan and its suitability to you to help you understand how to better manage your energy use to maximise your benefits. Side note: Assist the customer by explaining the differences between a TOU tariff and a standard A1 tariff and the importance of assessing their usage habits during the relevant time periods. For example, if a customer uses most of the power during the day, including the energy generated by their Solar PV, then the Peak Demand Saver is probably not for them as they will be unlikely to have sufficient solar credits to off-set the Peak and Off-Peak evening rates. 37. How do I know if I m eligible to participate in the Peak Demand Saver trial? You may be eligible if you meet the following criteria: Residential customers who use electricity solely for residential purposes Live within the Alkimos Beach development Have an approved small scale renewable energy Solar PV system (with an inverter capacity no less than 0.5kW and no greater than 5kW) connected to the electricity network Consent to Synergy s product terms and conditions Apply online only at or or call How long is the Peak Demand Saver available for? The Peak Demand Saver Plan will be available for 4 years from for the duration of the Energy Storage Trial at Alkimos Beach. 39. If I join the trial, can I switch back to my standard tariff (A1, Smart Home Plan)? Yes, you can switch back to the available standard tariffs at any time. Please note, however, that if you want to re-join the trial, you may be charged a meter reconfiguration fee of $74 which is waived when you first joined the trial. 40. Points of note Homes that don t have a solar PV system installed can have higher bills than normal, even when all other behaviours remain the same. This is because of the need to buy more electricity from the network during the day, that otherwise would have been generated through the PV system. Seasonal changes can have an effect your usage and in turn general product performance, particularly with solar PV. Spring and summer generally see an increase in energy generation, meaning less reliance on the network during daylight hours.

On average, winter bills are usually about 11% higher than autumn. As an example Winter of 2016 was considerably colder than the previous year by an average of 1.3 degrees. Energy use in homes across Perth increased by 8%, particularly in the morning and overnight. General project questions relating to the trial 41. Is my house connected to the battery? No, there is no physical connection to the battery. The battery is connected to the electricity network. Any excess energy generated by a customer s PV system is exported into the network. The Peak Demand Saver plan is the virtual link between your household and the battery. 42. If I become part of the trial, am I storing and drawing power from the battery or the network? The network. Any excess energy you export from your PV system goes into the network and the battery is charged from the network. During peak times of energy usage, the battery discharges the stored energy back into the network. The Peak Demand Saver plan acts as the virtual link between your household and the network and calculates your storage and usage accordingly. 43. Who do I speak with if I have a query? Residents of Alkimos Beach should contact Synergy if they have questions about the energy storage system or the Peak Demand Saver plan being offered as part of the trial. Queries about the energy smart home package and any development related questions should be referred to the Alkimos Beach Sales and Information Centre. 44. How long is the trial for? The trial will last up to four years. 45. When did the ABEST project commence? The ABEST project commenced early Who will be involved? The trial is being led by Synergy in collaboration with the developing partners. Synergy will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the storage device and the retail tariffs being offered to customers. Lendlease has developed a behaviour change program to help residents understand how they can manage their use and cost of energy. Synergy will be responsible for reporting to ARENA about the learnings and key lessons of the trial. 47. Who constructed the project? Synergy in association with Alkimos Beach development partners LandCorp and Lendlease worked to deliver the Alkimos Beach Energy Storage Trial. EMC (Energy Made Clean) was contracted to design and build the ABEST project. 48. What s ARENA? ARENA is the Australian Renewable Energy Agency. ARENA is the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, an independent agency established by the Australian Government on 1 July The

agency has two objectives: to improve the competitiveness of renewable energy technologies, and to increase the supply of renewable energy in Australia. 49. What s the relationship between Synergy, Lendlease and LandCorp? Alkimos Beach is a residential suburb being developed through a partnership between LandCorp and Lendlease. Synergy is collaborating with the development partners to implement this trial. 50. Who do I speak with if it doesn t work or I have a query? Residents of Alkimos Beach should contact Synergy if they have queries about the community storage device or electricity retail tariffs being offered as part of the trial. Queries about the energy smart home package, and any development related questions should be forwarded to alkimos.beach@lendlease.com. 51. Why does it need to be at Alkimos Beach? Alkimos Beach was selected as the site for the trial as the development vision was to create a sustainable and environmentally conscious community supporting customers who wish to explore this emerging technology, test new products and services through a community energy storage device, support retail tariffs and the energy smart home package. 52. Will all future developments look to have this technology and PV cells become compulsory? No, this is a trial to better understand the benefits of energy storage combined with energy efficiency initiatives. 53. Why is Synergy interested in battery storage? Energy storage technology is rapidly improving and reducing in price. Just like PV systems have become more affordable and attractive, Synergy believes that energy storage will be the next technological break-through to help residents and communities manage their energy usage and save on energy costs.
